Hi All,

As you can see, I have lots of questions. I am scheduled for a reexcision on 1/3, and I'm wondering how the surgeon determines where to cut-there being no seed, or needle loc?

As always, your responses are very much appreciated

I was told that they mark the tissue that is removed to show which is the top bit, and which is the bottom bit, etc. (I assume all of the descriptions use medical terms instead of "top" and "bottom" and so forth, because if they didn't use medical terms, their reports would be short and readable, and then where would we be?) Then the pathology report explains exactly where the margins are too close, and the surgeon can tell where to take more tissue. It sounds pretty straightforward.

That sounds pretty straightforward—your post made me smile...”then where would we be” :).

    Thank you

I also had a 're excision after my mastectomy to clear margins. Like rockymountaingirl said, the pathology report says exactly where the margins are too close and that's where the surgeon will cut.

I found the gap between the mx and re-excision too long, one month, and that caused me a bit of stress. We waited for the Oncotype result because if i needed chemo my surgeon wanted me to heal for that rather. Oncotype came back 12 so we went ahead with re-excision. Shortly after I had radiation. The re-excision margind came back clear but because of extensive DCIS surgeon insisted on radiation.

    All the best.
