New Treatment Options

I was diagnosed with lobular cancer in 2011, stage 1, hormone receptor positive, node negative. Had lumpectomy and radiation, onco score was low so no chemo. I recently had a chest CT scan to rule out pneumonia and an incidental finding was an enlarged lymph node in the axilla. Just got the biopsy report back, and was told that it is lobular cancer in that lymph node. I will be meeting with my surgeon next week to discuss further testing and treatment, but I’m hoping that in the 8 years since my first diagnosis perhaps newer and more effective drugs and treatment options are available. I’m thinking specifically about immunotherapy, and Proton therapy (which is available at a hospital near me). Wondering If anyone here with a recurrence is being treated with any of these newer options.

I’m trying to stay positive but I feel like a complete failure, like I was handed an excellent prognosis and somehow blew it. Maybe I didn’t exercise enough or eat healthy enough, or lose enough weight. Intellectually I know random stuff happens beyond our control and it’s irrational to think otherwise, but it’s hard to shake the feeling that I let my family down

I am sorry you are dealing with a recurrence. This is NOT your fault. I exercise daily and eat extremely healthy, and I had a recurrence after 14 months. Sometimes a cell or 2 escapes. Lobular cancer is known for sneaking back many years later, as yours did. Tamoxifen did not work for me. If it is confined locally to the breast/node(s), my guess is that they will do oncotype and if it is low again, you'll do an aromatase inhibitor this time, rather than Tamoxifen. Since you had lumpectomy first time around, they'll likely recommend mastectomy this time, but perhaps with proton beam therapy or something like that, you can avoid it. Keep us posted.
