Sorry if this has been asked before. I start Chemo this Friday the 14th. My oncologist said I will lose my hair. For those ahead of me in this journey, did you shave it off before starting or wait until it started coming out? Also, did you lose your eyebrows and eyelashes? Just trying to be as prepared as possible so I’m not shocked by anything I hadn’t anticipated.

Thank you everyone

I waited until it was really coming out and then buzzed it so I could wear the wig. I lost all but a few eyebrows, all the bottom and some top lashes. That started later. I was able to fill the brows in and used eyeliner.

    Hi mnsotamom74!

We wanted to point out this thread to you called Hair Hair Hair, where many here have discussed their experiences with chemo and hair loss.

Also, you may be interested to know that studies have shown that cold caps and scalp cooling systems may be able to help keep much of your hair. For more information, see the main Breastcancer.org site's section on Cold Caps and Scalp Cooling Systems.

    We hope this helps!

I used the dignicap cost $450 a session, but I kept 90% of my hair until the final chemo treatment, then lost over 90% within 2 weeks of my final 6 cycle chemo it was taxotere, carboplatin, herceptin and perjeta. The nurse applied the cap wrong is why I lost my hair. They do not guarantee results so I am just out $2700 and still lost most of my hair. I did lose all the hair everywhere else, under my arms, my legs my eye lashes and eyebrows even all my body hair was gone. Most of it has grown back now, except my underarm hair. That's a good thing :)

mnsotamom74– I had A/C and Taxol last year. Lost all my hair, including brows, lashes, nose hairs (which caused a drippy nose during chemo), underarm, arms, legs, private area..... as posted all ready, all grew back except underarm hair.

My hair was long before chemo. I cut it really short before chemo to make it easier when it started to fall out. Started losing my hair between A/C treatment 3 and 4.

Ended chemo Aug 2017. My hair isn’t long enough yet to be able to pull it back into a ponytail. And it didn’t grow back as dense as it was before chemo. It did grow back curly, Aka chemo curl. It is still wavy now. I think as it grows longer, it’s weight pulls down the curls.

Tip- have some kind of soft beanie to wear after your hair falls out to keep you warm. It is amazing how much warmer I felt wearing a soft beanie, even in the summer ( air conditioning on a bald head— brrrr)

Hi, my hair was coming out 11 days after my first AC. Pubes drop first. I buzzed my head after #2 AC because the hair loss was insane. I lost my eyebrows and eyelashes a few weeks into my Taxol treatments. But, the head hair started to grow through Taxol. Interestingly, I never went bald my hair just stayed at that number 1 clipper length. My friend tried to old cap but with AC (there is a 16% chance of saving half your hair.) Her hair looked worse than mine, still does. She refused to shave it. But, to each their own on this journey. At least when she sends me pics of her head I get a good laugh. It’s so bad it’s good. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Hi mnsotamom - I completed 4 AC treatments and am on #2 of 12 Taxol.

I had very long hair prior to chemo, got it cut very short the day I began chemo, donated 16 inches. My hair began to fall out about 12 - 14 days post first treatment. It began with my pubic hair, then armpits, and head. My scalp got a little sore prior to the mass exodus of hair, kinda felt like when you have a ponytail in too tight, you know? I wanted to keep my hair as long as possible, but decided to shave it off when it really started to shed. It was just a mess, hair EVERYWHERE in the house, coming off in big clumps. I didn't want to shave it, but felt so much better after I did. Gives the illusion of having some control of how you lose your hair. One taxol infusion in, I still have eyelashes and eyebrows but don't expect to keep them. Time will tell.

Thankfully, we are in the cold weather time of year, so hats look pretty normal. Wear a hat or a wig, but cover up, baldness = coldness. Good luck to you, keep the faith and keep your soon-to-be-bald head up. It's all temporary.

lol! We all have friends like that I think. I have very short thin hair so losing my hair isn’t that bothersome to me as much as losing it everywhere “else” that sounds like its going to take a little time to get used to

When my already short hair started to go, I had it buzzed. I had a baseball type cap embroidered NO HAIR DAY, and wore that when out. No hair, Florida sun=sunburn. Too hot here in August for a wig

Then I lost every other hair on my body, as others have said. So for a month or so, no shaving legs or pits. Seemed strange. The pit hair never did come back. Everything else did, but thinner than before.

my mom went through breast cancer 8 years ago and her pit hair has never grown back and she never sweats, I can attest to that, she doesn’t need antiperspirant at all and when I hug her she just smells like her soap. That certainly would be a plus if I can find some in this situation.

My pit hair hasn’t come back - finished chemo a year ago. Love it!

I actually really liked being completely hairless - I was so smooth, like a baby. I know it sounds strange, but my skin felt so good.

The hair on my head started looking decent in October. The curls are more waves now and it is thick and soft. I look decent in a headband.

It took a long time for my eyebrows and eyelashes to grow completely back

I did TC, I’m about 2 mos PFC. I cold capped, and my hair thinned a lot (I estimate 50-60%) but I didn’t lose it. Never had to wear a wig or scarf, but did have to use Boldify at the end. My hair is already filled in enough that I don’t need the Boldify anymore. Never completely lost my eyebrows or lashes. My brows are about 1/3 gone and most of that happened at the end of chemo & post. My lashes are getting longer/thicker. Body hair hasn’t come back noticeably yet, didn’t lose 100% of that either, except under my arms (which is good).

Hi mnsotamom...It looks like I am two weeks ahead of you! I am planning on cutting my hair short in  2-3 days. I really don't want to see long hairs all over my pillow. This afternoon my scalp started "tingling" BUT I wonder if I am imagining it since I expect it to do something soon!! LOL!  I also have some soft sleep caps ready (someone recommended the Bamboo cotton). Even though I think I am ready, I am sure the next few days will be very emotional!

I bought some soft bamboo sleep hats as well. My mom keeps reminding me that this is Minnesota winter and my head is going to feel very cold easily. My husband plans on buzzing my hair when I’m at that point, my stylist offered whenever I’m ready but she usually always has a customer or two waiting for their appointment and if I get emotional ( and lately I get tears over everything big and ridiculously little) so I don’t think I can handle sharing that moment with people who don’t know me well

I had long hair as well and once it started falling out, especially when showering, I buzzed it as crying every day during showers just got to be too emotional. If you decide to buzz leave a 1/4 inch to avoid bumps and rashes.

My eyebrows and lashes didn't fall out until I was a week out of my 12 Taxols. This was hard as I thought I was over the hump. Heavy sigh as my lashes fell out three additional times. Hopefully they will stick this time.

I did purchase two wigs but really only ended up wearing one. Get some soft headcovers. Headcovers.com has a great selection.

    Stay strong!

Oh yes, no perspiration and no more deodorant needed, that is true for me as well. Strange, but I like it! I am about 1 1/2 years out from Chemo now and still no pit hair and no need for deodorant either :)

I had really long curly hair before treatment. I had my neighbor give me a cute short haircut. Then one week after starting A/C chemo I decided to shave it.

We had a "shaving party" mostly because I wanted my kids to know I wasn't afraid to lose my hair. They were 14 and 16 at the time. They both participated in giving me a buzz cut before my cousin finished the job.

Your scalp may tingle or feel sore as you start to lose the hair so don't let that frighten you.

My eyebrows thinned out, but did not completely fall out. I lost my body hair, eyelashes and nose hair. Everything slowly started to grow in during my Taxol treatments. My eyelashes grew in and fell out for a few growth cycles. My hair grew back very thick and curly just like before treatment.

Hang in there. It really feels like a marathon. You will look back and feel amazed at how you persevered

I had really long hair, but I cut it short right before my port placement surgery. It started falling out around my second infusion. I did dose dense AC + T, so that was about two weeks after my first infusion. Even though it was short, it drove me nuts while it was falling out, so I got it buzzed off after a few days. I was completely hairless by the end of chemo

Hey MNsotamom74! I'm a MNgirl myself. I am a little over three weeks pfc after 12 weekly taxol followed by 4 cycles of every other week A/C. I used the penguin cold caps and although it was a hassle, and my hair thinned, and my pony tail feels awfully skinny, people who don't know me would only think I have fine/thin hair. I'm pretty sure I have more than 50% left and am very happy with it since I got a trim a week ago (my hair is long and the ends were looking really scraggly).

I don't know if you are in/close to the Twin Cities but there is a woman, Susan, in St. Paul who is kind of an "independent contractor" for Penguin Cold Caps. Her garage acts as a local warehouse, so you don't have to wait for shipping. She has employees who you can hire to do the capping for you, or you can pay her for a class to teach friends/family members how to cap. I paid for the class and my mom and two of my aunts did my capping for me. Susan has been doing this for 9 years since helping her sister and claims a 98% success rate of her clients keeping enough hair that they don't feel the need to wear a wig/hat/turban. She is pretty flexible as well, I talked to her on a Friday afternoon and we had class on Sunday evening and I started chemo on Monday! I have lots of additional tips, too, if you go the cold cap route.

If you decide to let it go and shave it, I recommend turtle fur hats for outside. I've used their neck gators for years for down hill skiing, turtle fur is really soft, warm and comes in tons of colors.

Additionally, I got eyebrow wigs from headcovers.com after my brows got thin and I love them. much easier for me than trying to draw them on.

Best of luck to you, you're going to do great!

    Cria
