welcome back Kerri! Glad everything went well!
-
Kerri - so glad to hear you are doing well. Rest up and let yourself heal.
-
Had my first post surgery fill yesterday (PS put in 250cc at time of surgery). He only put in 50cc on each side, which what he usually does at first fill, saying he wants to take it easy in the beginning, and can do more on future fills. This now puts me at about the size I was before surgery (38B), but I'd like to go a little bigger so next week may do another 50 each, and possibly 50 more the following week, to top out at 400. It didn't hurt at all. I'm prepectoral so needle didn't go through muscle. I did take naproxen sodium about an hour ahead of time, but even this morning I don't feel any pain or discomfort from fill. I do notice that I don't feel the discomfort of the edges of the TEs quite so much, so that's a good thing too. His policy is no driving for 3 weeks, so that's disappointing, but can start using lotion/aquaphor on incision sites. Being only 16 days out I feel great and very grateful for how smooth this has been. I know many of you out there have more issues and complications that cause pain and such, and I hate that for you, but do want ladies to know that there can be good healing in this process.
-
Yay Kerri! So glad all is well with you! Rest and heal. :-)
borogirl, glad to hear things are going well for you as well! I understand your frustration with not being able to drive. 3 weeks is a long time! I was cleared to drive short distances at my 1 week post-op, but only because I begged (LOL), and I had to promise to be careful. I was grateful for this because I don't really have anyone else to drive me to my doctor appointments. Now at least I can get to those on my own.
I've just about reached the end of my rope with these darn drains. They have been stuck at 30 ccs/day for a week and a half, and I just want them GONE. The nurse told me the longest she's ever had anyone keep their drains in was 5 weeks. How awful would that be??? I'm at 2.5 weeks now and about ready to rip them out myself. *deep breaths* patience, patience...
-
I am seeing so much good news. Congratulations to all those who are doing well, and prayers for those who aren't. I see the PS today. He should have my pathology report. My drain is averaging around 30 the past few days, too. I want it pulled anyway. It is a big source of pain. I hope I am ready for a fill. With the loss of the nipple and the fact that righty was always smaller, it may take a while to get them equal.
-
It seems that I didn't get the instructions to just "take everything" until it was gone as far as all the prescription meds were concerned. What I heard was that I should try to get off of them as fast as was comfortable. Doing that Had me stopping then before I was ready but thought I was doing the right thing. Ugh. I'm nauseous from meds, I hurt, I'm so tired and frustrated. After getting my PS on the phone today his nurse told me exactly what to do, cashed in refills as necessary, and we're basically starting over with meds trying to get the pain under control (with some phenergan fur nausea). I hope this works. I'm 10 days out and feel like I've lost precious healing time by not getting good instructions and probably taking too long to muddle through on my own. My sister leaves Saturday and I'm nervous that I still need so much help and won't have it.

He said he won't pull drain until it is 20cc's a day. He recommended press and seal to protect the dressing. Exchanged the air for 400 ml of water. Not much more is needed. I can get my PCP to pull the drain.

Hello all of you beautiful warriors! Sorry I haven't checked in for awhile. My BMX was November 12 and I'm doing remarkably well! I went back to work Tuesday (I work part-time as an education consultant) and am happy to be back (mostly) to my normal routine. I love reading all of your updates! Congrats to all of you already done with surgery and prayers for those still waiting.
My question is: have any of you already met with your MO? I met mine on Tuesday afternoon and I really like her. The only frustrating part is waiting for my Oncotype dx score to come back. It could be another 2 weeks!! My entire follow-up plan is being based on this score, so I am getting impatient. I just want to know if I'm doing chemo and if so, I'm ready to get started already! I hate 'dreading' things; I do much better when I have a plan to work with. I hate the 'not knowing' part of this whole thing. There is certainly a lot of 'hurry up and wait' that goes into cancer treatment.
Tomorrow, I go in for hormone labs and a chest xray. Monday, back to another follow-up with my PS. Then, back to my MO on the 14th and lymphedema education appointment on the 21st. I am starting to feel like my appointments are a part-time job all by themselves. Oh well, so much to be thankful for, that is for sure. I do know that I will NOT be doing radiation, so at least that's one thing to be certain about. I also know that I will be doing some type of hormone therapy, most likely tamoxifen for 10 years. Ugh. Sounds like SO long!!!
How about the rest of you? Anyone already have their follow-up treatment in place? I'd love to hear!!!
Thank you for this awesome group! It is so reassuring and a comforting place to visit. Take care, all of you beautiful ladies!!! Hugs and love!

Wow, Borogirl. Your surgeon wants you to keep the drains in a long time. Since my last consult with him, he's changed his instructions from having 30no a day for 2 consecutive days to 50.
I didn't get a lot of sleep last night. Being in a room right in front of the nurses station didn't help. But I could actually lay on my side, which I'm hugely pleased about. I feel hugely tired and am looking forward to going home and getting some decent sleep. I got the nurse to disconnect my self administered fentanyl so I don't have drag the pole around with me. Feeling so much better than I expected to👌

Hi
I had double mastectomy 7th Nov I have a Seroma that is really big at front and under arms and uncomfortable but today seems to have lessened at front but my husband says my back is swollen it doesn't hurt Does anyone know how long they stay if not drained
-
Saw my MO this morning to talk about my biopsy results. Before surgery it was assumed that I was stage 1B with no lymph nodes effected. After surgery we found out that my right side had no traces of cancer..chemo did it’s job there. On the left side, my tumor did shrink a bit and it was removed. 9 lymph nodes were taken out and 8 had cancer. Therefore my stage has changed to 2A. MO wants me to start Tamoxifen now instead of waiting until after radiation treatments are completed. I see the RO tomorrow morning. MO also said that down the line, I should have surgery to take out my ovaries. We will get to that hurdle later.
Also saw the PS today. He said that all of my incisions are healing nicely and put in another 50cc in each TE(didn’t hurt a bit), so now I’m at 350cc. He also cleared me to sleep in bed. I can’t wait!
Continuing positive vibes to all of you. This is tough stuff, but we’re tougher
-
Love hearing everyone's recovery stories. We're all so different.
I'm 16 days out & saw my PS today. Had another drain removed which leaves me with 1 drain left. Also had my 1st fill. I'm a plus-size woman so I'm getting more filled than I'm reading from you all. I had 360cc filled at bmx & today he decided to go double, as I had "lots of room to fill", and I was filled with 120cc each. That leaves me at 480cc now. We will likely go to 800cc. Surprisingly, I feel fine & there's no real discomfort. For that I'm thankful.
My oncologist appt is tomorrow so really looking forward to that. Like Christine1975, I know 10 years of hormonal therapy is in the plans, but still unsure of chemo. I'm not even sure if the test has been ordered. So im expecting some waiting for me too.
Evily, i'm so amazed at your activity level, especially with your drains. Go girl! 🙂 I started driving on Tuesday & that helped me feel back to my usual self a bit. I'll return to work next week. Here's wishing you all a speedy recovery.
-
That’s great, Keri! Thank you all for positive vibes! Surgery complete!!! I’m a little sore, mostly under the breasts. Going to keep waving in the pain meds. Finally ate something. The best jello of my life! Ha!!

Two more left for the November class, including our beloved Wigging.
After my fill, I came home and.tried.to.relax for a while. Finally, I figured that it was about time to do is finish a batch of orange marmalade. I was enjoying the exercise of jarring it, but felt some deflation when I sat down. ????? Aha! The heat. A hot pack under righty, and all is good with the world, except my keys are still missing.
-
I see my surgeon on Saturday. I seen my oncologist on Monday this week. It looks like Radiation and hormonal treatments for me. Waiting for the call from the radiation do
-
I'm home. Yay. Just had a 2 hour nap. Yay. I can sleep on my side. Super yay. Right side is very swollen with some really impressive bruising. Not so yay. Pain is manageable so far. Yay again.
-
Hello to my fellow November gals. I have been remaining quiet on the posting but have very much enjoyed reading all of yours and learning of your progress. I had my BMX on November 15 with the TUG (transverse upper gracilis) reconstruction (they used the fat and gracilis muscle from my inner thighs to reconstruct my breasts). My surgery was a success and I have been home healing and feeling better each day. I am EXTREMELY pleased with the outcome as my breasts looked better than I had imagined with scarring only around the areola area as I requested. The scars on my legs are quite extensive and painful as they heal as I am not permitted to sit in a chair at 90 degrees hip flexion for 3 weeks post surgery for concern of ripping out the inner stitches. You can only imagine how difficult going to the bathroom is! I am now sleeping in my bed and spending days in my rented medical reclining chair. I can also walk with no problem (thank goodness) and stairs have become easier each day.
I received the final pathology report and will begin meeting with oncologists the week of Dec. 10. As I did when selecting a medical surgeon, I am meeting with 3 different oncologists to get opinions and "interview" them before I make my selection. When I went through this process in selecting my medical surgeon, I received 3 completely different surgical recommendations. I was pretty surprised about that but selected the doctor whose ideology was most in line with mine and am grateful that I took the time to go through the "interview" process. I am curious and very nervous to hear the recommendations of the 3 different oncologists and wonder if they will all be consistent or varied.
Many of us will be going through the oncology part of this journey together and I hope that you all continue to update and share your experiences as I have found all of your posts to be so informative.
Be well!

Hey all, just left the oncologist & she's recommending chemo. I'm crushed.. really wasnt expecting it since no lymph node involvement. Also oncotype dx hasn't been received. Yet she advises chemo anyway.
I caved in the office & made my 1st infusion appt in less than 2 weeks. but just in the ride home I've already back pedaled. .. do I really need this aggressive treatment? Should I be more vigilant in my own care & seek a second opinion, such as the previous poster? ..i'm so unsure at this point.. in tears.
-
I do so enjoy seeing everyone’s posts-even if I haven’t been posting much
Oya80...I think you should get a second opinion for sure! I’ve been amazed with the HUGE differing opinion another Doctor may have over another’s opinion. Sending you lots of care and strength.
I just thought I’d throw out there that I got my last drain out today-yay! It was only putting out about 2-3 ccs a day by now (surgery was on 11/15)...and it was a direct to implant-pre-pectoral...feeling better with those out already!
Take care out there
-
I had my surgery 11/7/18....Total mastectomy, was not able to spare my nipple, I also had reconstruction where they put expander in at the same time~Had two lymph nodes removed...My level has been a constant 4 or 5 ...I still have one drain in..
I would like to know how long you have this pain? I was thinking a couple weeks & I would be over the most part of this...Not so, I hurt more this week than the week before..What about you? How long does it take to not hurt?

Hi all!
I got my drains out yesterday, and today I got to take my first shower in 2.5 weeks. Oh bliss!!! I will never again take showering for granted!
Oya, I'm so sorry to hear you may be facing chemo. I would be crushed too. I agree with sugarmaple - get a 2nd opinion.
Kerri, so glad you are doing so well post-op! Yay indeed!
Kstinekd, so glad your surgery went well too!
Renee, I can't imagine not being able to sit normally! You are a trooper!
Welcome, Joy4Joy! So sorry to hear you are having so much pain. Everyone is different, and some people just experience more pain than others, but I think you should talk to your surgeon, because you shouldn't have to suffer. Maybe they can prescribe a different pain med. Hang in there - it does get better!
-
I’m out of surgery and home recovering. Initial node section was negative. They weren’t able to put my implants in because of too much bruising from my biopsy, but I’m going back in Friday to have them done...another surgery...not exactly what I expected but am going to roll with the punches. Feeling pretty good so far, just on Tylenol today. My neck hurts the most out of anything and I’m not sure why!
Love to all of you who are starting your oncology journeys. I’m not sure when that will start for me. Soon enough I’m sure.
-
Hi all! I had my BMX on Thursday afternoon. Ever since then the left drain insertion point is brutally painful when I move my arm, lay down, or get up. The doctor checked it out yesterday before I was discharged and said it looked fine. Does anyone else have this? I am going to ask my husband to take off the bra they put on me so we can see if it’s laying differently than the right drain, which doesn’t hurt at all. I’m terrified because the pain is a ten when the tube moves.
Thanks!
-
kstinekd-
I don’t have any pain like that around my drains. I think you should call and ask your doctor. That’s what they are there for. Are you taking pain meds? You’re home, right?
-
kstinekd - my drains did hurt on the left side and it was more due to the tape the put on to hold them in place. Once they took off the tape I felt instant relief. Maybe you doc can adjust the dressing on that site so they don’t hurt so much.
-
Sometimes pressure will push a drain deeper into some already tenderized tissue. I have used bits of cotton to reduce pressure.on that point. It seems to help.
glad to see.you finally graduated, wigging. I visit the oncologist on the seventh. I am getting anxious to know what they have planned for me, since mine is not hormone sensitive.
-
kstinekd, my drain insertion sites were the most painful thing for me during my first 24 hours post-surgery! They hurt so bad! It got gradually better after that though. After a week (it may have been less), it didn't hurt at all. Still, it wouldn't hurt to follow up with your doc if it is still really bad tomorrow.
-
For drain site pain, I smeared on lidocaine/prilocaine cream and it's been a LIFESAVER!!! I'm nearly 3 weeks post op and still have all 4 drains. Hopefully Monday I can lose some.
I'm going back in Wednesday for axial node dissection. It might get complicated due to my lat flap and expanders in place. That stupid false negative. If it had been accurate during the MX then she would have removed them. Oh well. Here we go!
