Birads 3 Anxiety

Good morning,

I'm new to dealing with any Breast concerns. Went 11/16 for annual mammogram, thought I'd get the all clear. Instead I was sent for diagnostic mammogram, 3D and us-due to asymmetry in right breast at women's health imaging center affiliated w breast cancer center of excellence. The asymmetry was given all clear when copared to previoous us and mammogram supportedthaat but something was found on the other side of my right breast

My report, it's left me feeling in limbo. Birads 3 back in 6 months "Probably" benign isn't reassuring. I dont even know what they're watching-cyst, lump-Dr just says a "mass"

FINDINGS:
Mammogram:
An asymmetry in the inferior right breast has a similar breast
parenchymal pattern dating back to 2015 on additional diagnostic
imaging with no underlying suspicious findings on spot compression
tomosynthesis views. Findings are compatible with superimposition of
fibroglandular tissue. Due to dense breast tissue, targeted right
breast ultrasound was performed.

Ultrasound:
Targeted right breast ultrasound of the inferior half for the
mammographically detected finding was performed. No suspicious solid
or cystic masses are identified. No sonographic correlate for the
asymmetry seen in the inferior right breast. Incidentally identified
at 8:00, 6 cm from the nipple is an oval, circumscribed, hypoechoic
mass with no internal vascularity and parallel orientation measuring
0.3 x 0.2 x 0.3 cm. This is a probably benign mass.

I've talked to my gynecologist, she said she'd be fine waiting 6 months if it were her mammogram but will give me breast specialist referral if that will help me with anxiety. Dr also said nothing she sees in radiologist report jumps out as concerning to her.

I'm not sure what to feel right now about this.

Benign appearing and hasn’t changed since 2015, which backs up benign. I’d just do the follow up. Birads 3 is estimated to be a less than 3% chance of being anything to worry about

I understand and read the bold. No internal vascularity and parallel, orientation favors benign fibroadenoma and it has been stable for years and has not increased in size

Did you also have an ultrasound too? My understanding as a layperson is that no sonographic correlate is good sign, more likely to be benign if the ultrasound does not pick up what was found on the mammo. I recently had a birads 4 in that situation and was given the option of 6 month follow up or biopsy. I chose biopsy as I had a prior diagnosis and it turned out benign. Birads 3 is even less likely to be anything bad and in that situation I would have been OK with the 6 month follow up, if that is any help.

I decided to call the breast center this morning and request a new patient appointment to get a second opinion on my results, a clearer understanding of what this could be and if they agree with waiting for a 6 month ultrasound follow up.

They gave me an appointment with an internal medicine dr at the benign breast center on 12/19.

My husband has been a rock, keeping me positive and distracted.

Hi,

I'm sorry you're going through this. Hearing that you have a mass in your breast is never easy. Especially when they only use words like "probably" benign. I have been there myself. I'm not an expert or a Dr but from what I can gather, they probably think your mass is a fibroadenoma. But listen. If you aren't going to be able to sleep at night without knowing, you should call your Gyno and tell them it's causing you too much anxiety and you'd like a biopsy. It will give you peace of mind either way.

Thanks for the support! It’s my first go round with this and I’m struggling. I’m thankful to have found a place like this to vent.

I did talk to my gyn who set me up an appt at the benign breast center with an internist to discuss my (many) worries.

I saw my PCP yesterday for my annual physical and my labs came back microcytosis, so now I need to be checked to see if I’m anemic! How can all of this be happening? I feel absolutely fine?!?!

I wanted to post an update-I met with the Specialist today just to unpack what my ultrasound results were and what Birads 3 means.

I left feeling much more informed about the terminology and why Birads 3 was assigned.

She also examined my breast and was not able to feel the tiny mass 3mmx2mmx3mm-I was concerned that I was missing it and wouldn’t be able to notice changes waiting for the 6 month follow up. It was also helpful to know that I will likely be followed in 6 month intervals for a while.

Waiting until May for the next scan will still be hard but I feel much better informed than I did a few weeks ago.

Update:

This morning I had my 6 month follow up ultrasound. It was over quickly and with no physical discomfort.

There was no change in my mass since Nov 2018. It was reported as stable

They will follow with ultrasounds every 6 months for 2 years.

I am still Birads 3.

A chest CT due to bronchitis and persist painful spot on my chest incidentally found a mass on my left breast. I also informed my Dr repeatedly of tender and swollen right armpit. I'm 46 and never had a screening. My first mammo was diagnostic followed by US. Of breasts and right axillary. Axillary US state benign lymph node measuring 1.5 centimeters in Maximal diameter. Sonogram of the right axilla otherwise negative and Birads 3 given ... L. Complicated mass 9x6x4 containing small amounts of septation and debris. Follow up US in 6 months. R. 6mm cyst bi rads 2 benign (YAY) My Dr insisted my chest pain was due to anxiety and stress (due to my toxic work place issues) and told me cancer didn't cause pain I was describing. So here I am 6 months later, time for follow up. I changed Drs due to the stress she was causing me by insisting it was stress! Lol) a month or so ago I noticed that my left breast and nipple are now hanging much lower than my right and looks and feel fuller than before only on the bottom part of my boob. The difference is noticeable and only recently dropped. Pain has been persistent the last 9mo. I'm waiting for my Drs office to call back to set up appt. lm sure all of your situations are much more serious than mine and my prayers are with you all. Im freaking out a little and would appreciate to know if anyone has had Bi Rads 3 and a boob that dropped suddenly. Thank you all in advance!🙏

Hello buddyrock!, I am in the same situation right now, my question is do you get mammo and US every 6 months or only US? I don't think I can take all the radiation of the mammo if given every 6 months for 2 years?

sorry for the delay-I am trying g to limit myself to checking in weekly as my appointment approaches & my anxiety increases.

Nov 2018 1 had mammogram, called back for 3D mammogram on 1 side and then ultrasound of both breasts. Was given Birads 3 and appointment for 6 month rescan of right breast (likely will be followed every 6 months for 2 years)

May 2019 just right breast ultrasound rescan.
No changes, told to return in 6 months for annual mammogram both breast’s and ultrasound of right breast.

Nov 2019 hoping for no changes.

Good luck to you! The waiting is really hard, but so important to have these follow ups
