Feeling Hopeless
Hello everyone my name is Hope. Im 28 years old and I think I have IBC STAGE IV. A few months ago my health started to deteriorate and in august of this year I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer. I had a total thyroidectomy October 30th. I have been put on Synthroid 175mcg. Prior to my surgery I developed a really bad rash on my armpits the area felt inflamed and it itched. Never had experienced it before I figured it was a reaction from a new antibiotic I was on. I was given a steroid because the inflammation spread to my arms and hands just everywhere never felt anything like it and didn't have anything to compare it to since Ive never had a reaction before to medicine. After my surgery I was originally started on levothyroxine 100mcg. A few days later the itchiness and inflammation started in my breasts. My breasts would become very red and hot to the touch I didn't know it was and thought it was a side effect from the medicine I asked my endocrinologist about it and she said she has never heard of levothyroxine causing symptoms like mine and I needed to get it checked out in the meantime she switched me to Synthroid 175 mcg. I went to my pcp and told him my concerns he stated he would give me a referral for a mammogram. He had me sitting around for two weeks only to be told he would need to do a breast exam before being able to do a referral I showed him my breast the day I saw him not to mention my breasts have been peeling. Ive never had problems before. The redness started to appear on my stomach, arms etc and be super hot to the touch. Now im having this same inflammation in my brain. The amount of urgent cancers and emergency rooms that I have been to doesn't make any sense and yet I cant get any help. Ive developed numbness in the feet I keep telling them I think it is ibc and it doesn't present like typical cancer symptoms some people don't get lumps but nobody will listen to me. I ended up in the emergency room again this morning and convinced them to give me a ct scan they said they couldn't see anything abnormal. Im at my wits end I know this form a breast cancer is very aggressive and nothing to play with and I keep trying but I don't know what do I feel like it has spread, especially to my brain. I got my gynecologist to give me a referral for a mammogram but I wont be able to make an appointment until Monday. I don't know what to do all of the statistics on surviving this cancer is horrible not to mention if it has spread. I feel like im dying. Any advice should I trust the ct scan I don't know what to do.

I think you perhaps need to get your thyroxine dosage checked and monitored as it seems to me from your post that you have a lot of fast thoughts, anxiety and hyper reaction....this is NOT a criticism but is part of having too much thyroid hormone in your system, is your heart racing as well? You can get skin issues with thyroid imbalance too........I have thyroid issues and would suggest you get a second opinion on your thyroid treatment.......
If a CT scan cannot see anything and your blood tests are all fine then its unlikely to be cancer but you could have an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients in your medication or be on the wrong dose for you......
Good luck

Hello Lily,
I did not take it as criticism at all and simply wanted to say thank you for taking the time to even respond I appreciate it. To answer your question my heart doesn't race. I have attributed some of my symptoms to the thyroid issues especially the joint pain I get but as I stated I mentioned those concerns to the endo, she doesn't think the breast issues is related when I look online to see if anyone else had experienced the inflammation due to the thyroid medicine I cant fine anyone. I really feel like its IBC but I will also consider the fact that I may be wrong.

Hopeful, you're being as proactive as you can be so good on you. If you have a mammogram Monday or some time next week another positive step. Have they run RA, lupus, lymphoma etc, bloodwork? It does take awhile to chase down each mysterious symptoms so don't give in to despair. Keep us in the loop and push for tests that will give you peace ofmind. HUGS Jo

Hello Jo,
Thank you for the hugs . A couple of months ago I had bloodwork done for a autoimmune panel which included lupus all was negative. Lymphoma now that one im not sure of in the er they did your standard blood work cbc count etc. I also donot have diabetes as that's the first thing they asked when I said numbness in the feet. The Ct scan they did was only on my brain not the full body. I'm definetly trying to be proactive as these symptoms are scary and as a person who has faced cancer once already im worried I just want to be on top of things as best as I can. As well as the fact I don't know my family history on either side I cant say if breast cancer even runs in my family. Thank you for responding.

Hopeful, like Jo mentioned, you're being proactive, that's key. Keep doing it. You've already had Thyroid Cancer, so IMO, you NEED to be vigilant about your health as it is. Hopefully you'll be able to get your Mammogram scheduled asap. I think once you and your team know what's going on there, you can make a plan that will reassure you. Fingers crossed.
If I were in your shoes, I'd probably be concerned too. There are studies that do support a link between Thyroid Cancer and incidences of Breast Cancer. (not to alarm you, just to say "hey, your concern is warranted and your team should take that seriously.")
The Breast-Thyroid Cancer Link: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis---
Summary
Women with a prior history of differentiated thyroid cancer are at an increased risk for breast cancer. Furthermore, women with a history of breast cancer are at an increased risk for differentiated thyroid cancer. Despite sometimes conflicting results as to the magnitude and significance of this risk, the above meta-analysis demonstrates a clear association and increase in co-occurrence of these two malignancies. Although further studies are needed, clinicians should consider the increase in risk for second primary cancers when caring for these individuals.

All that being said, try to breathe and remember that the waiting is the hardest part. I'm sure you know that full well, given you've already beaten cancer once.
It does seem strange to me that your Endo is not familar with Levothyroxine causing SEs like the rash and swelling you describe. That seems easily found on the internet for a layperson, how come they aren't aware? Have you seen this Endo for awhile and trust them? Stay on top of things. You're your own best advocate.
At any rate, we're here for you. Try to take things day by day or hour by hour, it gets scary sometimes to look at everything in a big picture sort of way when we're worried. Hang in there and keep us posted.
((((Hugs))))

Hello Spoonie,
Hope you are doing well I agree with you. I have not had this Endo for awhile Ive only seen her twice once after my initial diagnosis and once to switch to Synthroid. I know that everyone is different. But I don't want to mess around but talking to these doctors I feel like im talking to myself smh. I will keep trying and keep you posted. Thank You

Hello everyone,
I go for a mammogram and ultrasound on Thursday. Is a ultrasound more accurate than a mammogram?
-
It it sounds like your determination paid off I think it's very smart to have a mammogram. If they're concerned from the images then they can take a skin sample to see if it's inflammatory breast cancer or something unrelated.
-
Hopeful218:
Have you seen a breast specialist or dermatologist? It sounda like one of them might be able to tell you what it is.
-
wc3,
hello im going to the breast clinic for the tests and depending on what happens there I will ask to see a dermatologist etc
-
exercise_guru,
Hello Im definetly trying to figure out whats going on.
-
hopeful - good luck and I hope you find resolution soon.
-
Is an ultrasound more accurate than a mammogram?
Neither is more 'accurate' than the other as they are very different exams and show different things, and as such they are complementary. Their combined findings are the foundation of the evaluation of the breast. At times they will tell you exactly whats going on, other times they will point the way to additional exams that will answer the clinical question. Let us know what your studies show.
-
thank you CasM
-
djmammo,
will definelty post my outcome on thursday
-
Hi Hopeful, have you seen an endocronlogist for your thyroid? If you haven't I'd suggest you see one to get an opinion on your thyroid medication dose. To go from 100 to 175 seems quite a jump at once or did you incrementally adjust upward? I'm so sorry you are going through this.
-
Feelinghopeless...so sorry you are going through this. I hope you get some answers soon. To answer your question about ultrasounds being more accurate, mammograms are not the best screening tool for dense breasts which you have due to your age. Actually, MRIs ate the best screening tool for dense breasts. May I also say that because of all you have going on, IMO you should be treated at a major university teaching hospital. At least get a second opinion at one. Good luck and keep us posted. We are all here for you.
-
cowgirl,
I saw my endocrinologist she switched me to 175 the next day, when I complained of my symptoms she felt due to my weight I needed a higher dose.
-
Dtad,
Thank you I will definetly keep that in mind. Hopefully everything goes okay tomorrow im kind of nervous, trying to keep calm and not panic.
-
Good luck and keeps posted...
-
Hopeful, so glad you have an endocrinologist! Please excuse my ignorant comment about the speed of upping your dose.
-
cowgirl,
I didn’t take offense no worries
My ultrasound came back normal they wouldn’t do a mammogram because of my age even though I had been told they would be doing both. The lady who did the manual exam said she doesn’t think it’s IBC but for my own peace of mind I requested a referral to a dermatologist to push for a punch biopsy. In the meantime they suggested primrose oil supplements.
-
With a clear CT scan and a clear ultrasound, I hope that has helped alleviate some of your worries! Good luck with the punch biopsy, and figuring out what is causing your troubles.
-
it did a little bit but not completely
-
hello everyone just wanted to keep you updated I have an appointment with a dermatologist December 10th so hopefully I can get the final nothing is wrong we will see. The evening primrose oil has helped with the pain. Hope everyone is doing okay
