Mammogram scheduled

edited December 2018 in Not Diagnosed But Worried

Hi all! Thank you for taking the time out to read this. Friday Nov 16 I felt a lump in the shower (noticeably big, no pain), I went to the doctor Monday and she said it was hard and about the size of a golf ball and had me schedule a mammogram. Fast forward to Thursday and the lump is the size of a grape but it’s still hard; so I wonder if maybe the “golf ball” was swelling and the grape is the actual lump. Has anyone had this same occurrence? I’m 29 next month and my grandma has had breast, ovarian, and uterine cancer.

Do you have a copy of the radiolgy report? What exactly does it say?

    I need a biopsy. They said it’s a 5 cm mass

Sorry to hear that. When is your biopsy scheduled? You can ask about the birads number if you want an indication of risk. Not sure if it's actually helpful or not though, you know? No matter what you're still waiting and it suck.

Have you had genetic testing? Your gynecologist may be able to prescribe while you're waiting, based on family history.

Hoping for good news for you!

They’re calling today to schedule it. The nurse said she wants to get me in tomorrow if possible and the results take one to two days.

So when she calls I can ask her what the birads number is? Are those a good indication of the outcome or are they wrong at times?

She mentioned genetic testing so maybe that’ll be a possibility.

    Thanks so much!

Birads is their way of saying where it strikes them on the spectrum from 'this looks like nothing alarming to us but we're not 100% sure without a biopsy' to 'this looks just like cancer to is but we're not 100% sure without a biopsy'. So in that sense it's hard for it to be wrong, but it might not be so helpful. You could have a low birads score but it's cancer or a high birads score and it's not cancer. I think that's why they'll use it for deciding whether to schedule a biopsy or whether to tell the patient to watch and wait and rescan in x months, but not necessarily share with patients.

I didn't know about them until after my biopsy confirmed cancer. Then I looked back and yup, my birads was a 5 - the highest you can get without clinically confirmed cancer. But I couldn't really have done anything differently in the meantime anyway. Maybe set up an alternate doctor with a more reliable fax system to get the results sent to. So that's why I'm not sure whether it's good or bad to have the score. Based on some posts see here, lower scores don't actually relieve women of worrying.

Tomorrow would be great! I had about a week between them and then over a week to wait for results of the biopsy. I hate waiting.

My Birads was a 6, so sometimes I guess they do know for sure.

You've probably already looked this up, but BiRads 0 means they don't have enough information. I have a biopsy on Thursday for a mass that grew and changed a bit in a 6 month interval follow up. Had one last year as well - wishing you peace and comfort. I feel like we all need that in spades while waiting for results. xoxo

Jmorra22- The waiting is definetly the hard part. Looks like you are getting in for your biopsy soon so hopefully you will not have to wait the weekend for results. At the womens center I went to they called within a couple days with the results. I am a little confused by your Birads score being a 0 with them doing a biopsy, but as Salamandra said, you will be waiting either way. I was too antsy and had them upload mine to the portal so I could get my Birads score. It was a 5 as I suspected. Is it an ultrasound core needle biopsy that you are having? I am sending good thoughts for B9 results for you!

well now I’m confused because I just read the report and it said birads is 4B but the nurse told me it was 0.

    here’s the report:

There is a 3.7 x 2.5 cm lobulated mass with an indistinct margin in
the left breast at 1 o'clock middle depth. This lobulated mass is
hypoechoic. This correlates as palpated. Color flow imaging
demonstrates that there is increased vascularity.

IMPRESSION: 4B SUSPICIOUS - MODERATE SUSPICION FOR MALIGNANCY -
    FOLLOW-UP RECOMMENDED
The 3.7 cm lobulated mass in the left breast is at an intermediate
suspicion for malignancy. An ultrasound guided biopsy is recommended.

That BIRADS score makes more sense, but again doesn’t give you the answers you need. I am sorry you are going through this. I can understand exactly how scary this feels while waiting for answers. When will your biopsy be? I truly wish you moments of peace while waiting. And please try to stay away from google, sometimes that just scares you more and the information you might be reading could be inaccurate.

Thank you. Biopsy was today. The radiologist who did the initial ultrasound and the one who did the biopsy both said different things about the way the tumor looks. One said indistinct and the other said circumscribed. Those are two totally different views on opposite ends. Wouldn’t they be the same?

I hope everything went well for the biopsy. Ice packs were my friends after mine!! Hopefully you will know an answer in the next couple of days. Hang in there. Try to find things to distract yourself while waiting, even though that might feel impossible

Jamora I am so sorry. The beginning stages I felt were the worst for me as far as anxiety and fear. That does lessen as you find out what you are dealing with and what the plan is. It is so much information in the beginning so please don't hesitate to ask any question on here. You are definitely not alone in this as Debal said. I wish you the best.
