Hi, I have breast cancer and now my sister has breast cancer.  She has BC/BS.  Can she get her insurance to pay for her wig?

I think it depends on her policy. BCBS would not pay for my wig.

My DH has BC/BS through his work. We have a PPO and according to the benefits book I should only have to pay $40 for a wig, after obtaining a prescription for one through the Oncology office.

I also have BC/BS PPO. If the wig provider is not "in-network", you may be subject to the out-of-network deductible.

My MO gave me a prescription for a wig, but I never bothered to get one. But when I called BC/BS about the breast prosthesis (I had a prescription for one), I was told that it would be covered 100% if I went to an in-network provider, but only 60% if I went out-of-network and they would apply it to my OON deductible so I would end up paying 100%.

Hopefully you have better coverage, but you may want to double-check with BC before spending the $.

As stated above, it depends on the policy. I had a prescription but “cranial prosthesis” was covered that was excluded by my employer, to keep costs down I presume. Fortunately, my cancer center provides a free wig to patients. I found after one day though, that I hated it (hot, awkward). Instead I rocked the bald look with absolute badassery, lol

If her insurance doesn't cover a wig (cranial prosthesis), look into the American Cancer Society's Look Good Feel Better program. They have partnered with ebeauty to provide free (gently used and restored) wigs to cancer patients, but several women in my local area told me that LGFB provided them with a free, new, high-quality wig with a fitting from a local shop. I'm sure it depends if there is a local shop that has volunteered in an area, but at a minimum you can get one from ebeauty. It was probably silly of me to decline when offered because it's free, but I stayed with scarves and beanies. http://www.ebeauty.com/

I have BC/BS and they covered $500 towards my wig. Had to jump through some hoops but I’m persistent.

yes, my BCBS policy covered it.

I didn’t us a wig much tho. I preferred the chemo beanies.
