Athletes - Joint/Muscle pain on Tamoxifen & resolution

I'm grateful to learn that I'm not the only one to suffer from muscle pain on Tamoxifen. Back in December, I suffered a glute max strain while lifting (not a heavy weight), and 10 months later am still feeling it, to the point that it's even impacted my yoga practice. Also, I've picked up pain in one back muscle with no idea what caused it. I've decided to take a break from Tamoxifen after 3 years, and am wondering how long it took for these aches & pains to resolve for others after Tamoxifen and how soon you were able to get back to training the way you wanted to.

Thanks!

Have you told your oncologist? The pain may not be tamoxifen

Jo, I saw him in April just after the MRI and cortisone shot, and told him that it had been going on since December, but I'll see him again next month and talk to him about it. Since the back muscle pain started long after I'd quit working out, I don't know what else to blame it on.

Curlykat, I thought I had hurt my back working in the yard. I do all my gardening and yard work. It came on slowly but really bothered me standing at the sink. I thought I had a hairline fracture. Did X-rays, physical therapy ,the whole nine yards. It started July of last year and by Christmas I could barely get around. Keep me in the loop . Jo

Jo, I sure will! I am going to talk to my orthopedist about doing platelet-rich plasma transfer & will have some massage work done, but I know you understand how frustrating it is to have pain that doesn't seem to make any sense. My MRI showed no tear and very little inflammation - and that was back in April. I shouldn't still be hurting. We'll see how it goes.

    Good luck to you!

I have muscle pain too...well, hard to tell if it's muscles or tendons (possibly both), but I get "hurt" very easily. Like opening a door with one arm (instead of balanced perfectly between the two arms) can cause my arm or wrist to hurt for days. Playing the piano hurts my hands so much I barely do it anymore. I hate blaming things on the medicine, but I can't imagine I have deteriorated so much in the last couple of months that lifting something under 10 pounds causes lasting pain. I really do think it's my tamoxifen. Not old enough to have age related arthritis or anything...

gb2115 - I have the same issue with getting hurt easily. My MO tells me it is getting older - so because of “natural” aging I’ve gone from 45 to 69 in a year? No, it’s cancer treatments!

I used to always carry too many grocery bags looped around one arm. If I do that now I have arm pain for a week.

I’m a runner, but can no longer go as far and fast - if I do, I have aches for weeks.

I agree, it is the tamoxifen!

VL22---thank you for sharing! Yes, I'm only 40, diagnosed when I was 38. And was extremely active before then (I used to teach aerobics but quit when I got my diagnosis). I could barely trick or treat with my child last night because of ankle pain going up hills...that is NOT normal.

I see my MO in January again and will probably mention it, but I don't expect much more than her general sympathy. Not sure there's much she can do for me though.

gb - I just spoke to my MO and she told me to take a break from the tamoxifen for three weeks to see if I feel better.

VL & gb, I agree that blaming it on aging is a bad excuse. Especially for active women - there's no reason that this should happen so suddenly just because we're a couple of years older. Certainly dealing with cancer and treatments takes a toll on our bodies, but I have no other explanation than the tamoxifen. Hopefully, taking a break will show us some improvement.

Good luck to you both, and keep me posted!

I hate when the doctors say, well you are getting older... I've been getting older for a while now, just turned 60, but I'm a former fitness trainer, keep in shape, work out seriously every day, am very healthy(except for cancer😂😂😂) My hormonal treatment was tamoxifen for awhile and my joint amd muscle pain was constant. When I switched to anastrazole, it gradually got a little better. But I have the same situation, I do things I've always done, carrying heavy things, moving furniture, and I'm sore for a week! Doctors say take it easy! Wrong answer😄! But i can say, its getting better. And the constant hot flashes practically gone, so hang in there!

So I’ve been off of tamoxifen for 4 days. I expected no improvements this fast, but my joint pain has been greatly improved . I went for a great 5 mile run yesterday without the usual hip/ leg joint and muscle pain. Last night I could sleep anyway I wanted - nothing hurt! I actually didn’t have to take Advil this morning.

    Hot flashes still the same.

Wow, VL, that's great! I'm approaching 3 weeks with no change. I'm glad you've had such a quick response to taking a break.

I had to quit running due to knee pain at about the 3 year mark, after starting Tamoxifen. I finished my 5 year course & my knee was not any better. So for me, it probably is getting older.

Just wanted to give a Tamoxifen vacation update. Today was day 12 without the pill. Yesterday was the day when I got out of bed and was like “wow! So this is how normal feels!”

My energy level is definitely up - much more stamina running and hiking. Not sucking for air or feeling like my bones will shatter. Cleaned my house in a way I haven’t in months.

My joint pain is almost completely gone.

I didn’t realize how much of a fog my mind was in. I knew I couldn’t concentrate, but I feel much more present.

I had serious dry skin issues - elbows, around eyes and lady parts - all are cleared up.

The only thing that I still have are the hot flashes, although not as frequently. I am still not sleeping through the night and have trouble falling asleep.

I’m just so much happier. I didn’t realize I was so down.

I meet with my MO at the end of the month. I want some hard numbers of recurrence risks, not the generalizations. Also, my joint pains have gone, but can this medication do permanent damage?

I can’t go back to the body pains. However, I will be willing to try tamoxifen again if the I’m not comfortable with the numbers and if a plan is in place to combat SEs.

I know how you feel but maybe the doctor can switch you to a different med. I stayed on AI for two years thenquit. 31/2 years later I'm metastatic. Had great numbers for recurrence and distant metastasis. Those numbers went up w/o AI. I hate the choices we have to make but that's the nature of the disease. Jo

Thanks Jo - I’m definitely open to keep trying tamoxifen. I’ve learned that I should have reported SE’s earlier and been more “demanding “ about the side effects being acknowledged. Won’t make the same mistakes again

Ah, girls I feel your pain. I've been awake for an hour now- it's 4AM- thanks to an awful muscle cramp in my foot. I'm also active, a runner and yogini, and achy nonstop. VL- agree on the down feeling too- just low energy. Before all this happened my kids nickname for me was Rocket bc I was always on the go. But what choice do we have? Thanks Jo for sharing your experience. How are you doing now?

Wow VL22, glad you are feeling better!! I hurt my knee last week and it's depressing. Had nothing to do with the tamoxifen (I ran into a hard piece of furniture), but it's hard being inactive.

Hi all, I am in the same boat. I have been a runner, hiker, climber and very active. I started on a Lupron and anastrazole a year ago after my second bout of cancer. The first time with cancer I did tamoxifen but it gave me bad headaches so with only a 3% chance of reoccurrence I stopped taking it. Nine years later I get cancer in both breasts. The joint and tendon pain I started awful, I told my oncologist I wanted to quit he said I would be looking at stage 4.. it is hard. I’m staying active but in so much pain

Mom4four - and your case sums about how difficult these decisions are! I dread going back on Tamoxifen, but I fear a recurrence. That being said, I can have a recurrence on Tamoxifen.

I see my MO very soon and plan on having a very in-depth discussion.

So over this. I still can't stop getting "hurt" even from minor things. I pulled a muscle in my arm wringing out a washcloth this morning (who does that), now the entire arm hurts, and the other side (cancer side) too because the scar tissue is aching pretty badly. It hurts to even hold my phone...knee is still acting up so I am extremely inactive today. I don't like sitting around.

:-(. Just feeling down. Don't want to stop the meds but this really wears on you.

gb2115 - I’m so sorry you feel so poorly. I truly do understand - I know sometimes it can feel very lonely and others do not get it. I called my MO after getting depressed because the pain was affecting my ability to live normally. I think it is hard for people who are not very active to comprehend how devastating it can be to be unable to be active.

I’ve also injured myself doing mundane things and the pain lasts too long and seems to radiate throughout the body. I wish I had answers. It does help to not be alone.

I hope you feel better soon.

My arm and elbow ached for 2 days after....shopping on Black Friday! I guess the bags were heavy? It’s just hard when you have been active and within 6 months I feel 10 years older! I’m thinking of you VL22 and gb2115, it’s tough but we are tougher. I mean mud runs, obstacle courses back country skiing we can do that’s we can do this

Magnesium, calcium, vitamin D, epsom salt soaks all are very helpful. Had the shin spints, muscle aches, and began my experiments with vitamins and minerals. Magnesium works wonders.

Yes, the radiating pain! My whole upper body hurt yesterday. I almost took Tylenol for it, but gutted it out. It was better when I woke up this morning, but the one arm is still a bit tender. Trying to be easy on it today.

    :-)

Michelle - I’m a believer that getting necessary nutrients is better via food than pills. I did consider taking magnesium, but then looked at the list of foods it is in and realized it is basically my entire diet! Also I have no deficiencies in vitamin D or calcium.

As I said before, I really think a big part of the problem for me stems from starting Tamoxifen before I was recovered from chemo.

I will definitely try the epsom salt soaks.
