Chiming in here - I had surgery in August for UMX on left w TE placement. Surgery in Sept for additional axillary node dissection. Surgery in Oct of port placement for chemo. It does all get better. Limit yourself moving for a few days for sure. A bed wedge helped in bed. I certainly had difficulty with getting out of bed and transitioning from a laying down to sitting position for about 2 weeks. It got better as time went along. I had PT scheduled about 3 weeks after each surgery to help with tightness, mobility and range of motion. I was able to arrange telework after surgeries. The drains were the worst both times. I was ok'd to shower after with the drains day after surgery. I slept almost 2 weeks in supportive surgical bra and still sleep often in a bra of some sort. I feel mostly back to a new normal now.
Chemo then another 2 surgeries then radiation and hormone therapy. Long road, great support here. Best of luck and I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving.

BluGene, I am still sleeping in a recliner, 10 days post-op. It keeps me from rolling on my side (my usual sleeping position), and also helps with draining I think, since I'm not flat on my back. I have found it invaluable, but I know others have been fine without a recliner. If you have access to a power recliner, it's worth taking advantage of!
Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving! We certainly do have much to be thankful for.

one week post -op visit. Are you sure it isn't low blood sugar? Well, no.
Pain. You can alternate acetaminophen with tramadol. Oh, I knew i could, but didn't.
You will be getting calls to make appointments with occupational therapy and oncology. Pathology isn't back because of the holiday. Oncologist will be talking with you about oral med to prevent your other breast from developing cancer. OT about lymphedema. We can pull one drain.
Done? All done.
LOL

Catching up with everyone's posts it seems like a lot of surprises for all of us Nov surgery women. Same for me with some good & some tougher news. Good news was healing well & all fine there but pathology not totally as expected - lymph nodes clean (SNB done) but invasive found not just DCIS, so I'll likely be going on Tamoxifen once the oncotype and the full pathology is back. The surgeon and everyone seem a lot more surprised than I am - I guess I always figure they won't know til they know, which is why I was ready to do the BMX without debate. Now with the findings of more areas & more serious invasive type findings, even after 3 biopsies and multiple mammos, MRIs, ultrasounds etc, just shows the limits of the tools until the surgery is actually done and pathology is back. But knowing is always better than not I guess.
BluGene - I would second the recliner vote especially if you are a side sleeper, it's the only way to stay situated in place and I'm at 9 days post op.
coclico - I'd also second the vote on extending the time to start a new job - 19 days will not be long enough even going back to a job you know well much less to start something new. Give yourself a chance and delay the start. The recommended time off work after BMX is 6 week as said in another post - once you are in it, you can see why it's true. Pain, discomfort, drains, follow up appts, pathology etc. - lots to deal with after surgery that won't be resolved in that short a time. Wish you the best with upcoming surgery.

Well I'm 10 days post-op & had a little set back. I must've overdid it this week with the holiday & wanting to be a part of the action. I've been in bed mostly all day. Not in tremendous pain, but sore & overall tired feeling. All 4 drains are still in too... big bummer. Hope they're removed at 2 week followup appt.
Blugene- I've slept in my bed every night surrounded by lots of pillows & 2 body pillows. Until this week I slept alone but hubby & our lil guy are back. The body pillows help to keep us separated.
And so onward I go. Feeling antsy awaiting the whole oncotype dx & treatment recommendations. Final pathology was a 3.2cm tumor, clear margins. No Mets. So really hoping chemo isn't in my future.
Hope all of you are doing well out there! Be kind to yourselves & give your body time to heal. Much love.

Oya, there are times I feel sad about living alone with no relatives in the area, but I have better control over germs in my environment, no people making demands on my time and strength. I don't have people coming into my apartment criticizing my housekeeping; anyone who visits knows.
I hope you feel better soon.
I will probably get the pathology report through the patient portal early next week.
-
Thanks MC! You are so right about the demands on time & expectations. That's exactly how I wore myself out. Lesson learned.
Hope you get your pathology report soon. The waiting game is torturous at times. ..Be well🙂

11 days since surgery, and overall I feel good about my recovery. I was so happy to get all 4 drains removed on Wed. (9 days after surgery) although in my case it wasn't painless. I could feel the nurse pulling at the stitches on each side that hold the drains in place to cut them, and she told me to take a deep breath in and out twice. On the second breath out she yanked both of them on that side out. Yeow! Then did the same on the other side, and it hurt a little worse even. Pain was right at the drain incision site, so I don't know if it was because a scab had formed there, or I just wasn't as numb in that area as some women who claim no pain are. It was very tender for a couple of days and had a little oozing but seems to be much better today. Great news was yesterday I got to take my first full shower! Yippee!
I've been sleeping in a recliner since surgery, so I thought last night, because I no longer had drains in, that I would try to sleep in bed. Only made it for about 15-20 minutes. I felt like the saline in the TEs was spreading out in a different pattern than when I am upright, and it was very uncomfortable. Also felt like extra stretching tension across chest and into arm pits, although I also may have over done some reaching into cabinets yesterday. At any rate, it was back to recliner. This is actually the first day I haven't felt the need to take a nap. I haven't taken any pain rx since day 5, but I still sometimes feel a little weak or light headed. I suppose that is partly from blood loss during surgery, general trauma to the body, and the fact I have hardly been doing anything for 11 days.
PS put in 250 cc on each side at time of MX (estimating me to go to about 500 cc). I'm hoping when I get my first fill this coming Wednesday that that will ease some of the TE pain, going with the theory that the implants are still semi folded with lumps and creases, so more fill will fill in those creases. I tried to take it easier today and pain isn't as strong unless I touch the skin. I do have a little "scabbing" on parts of each nipple/areola but PS said that is not unusual with my type of incisions (around top half of areola and out to side 3-4"), and that I might loose a little color to that area once scabs fall off.
Hope healing continues for all of us post surgery ladies, and prayers for each of you ladies having surgery this next week. I does really feel good to have it behind you, even though it takes awhile to heal and fully recover.

I'm just jumping in after reading about all of you! I had my BMX on the 13th. I'm sore, but it's tolerable with pain meds. Those stinking drains are the worst for me! One is soooo sensitive and painful; I think it might be a little infected. I'm on oral antibiotics and hope that it clears up. I continue to gently wash it while gritting my teeth. Hopefully Monday I will be able to have at least two removed.
Keep up the recovery, everyone! Get lots of rest!

Had my BMX Wednesday afternoon. All went well and sentinel nodes we clean. With the holiday I'm guessing pathology report early next week I dated on the hospital an extra night as I didn't feel my pain was under control and I was so light-headed I couldn't walk by myself I can't believe the oral meds don't seem to do too much for the pain. I have a high tolerance but honestly I'm struggling. I know it will get better but for now it just plain hurts! I don't have a recliner but my friend bought be one of those TV pillows that sorry you sitting up in bed. It's a life saver I hope entering day 3 post op that I'll feel much better after today
-
bupivacaine was the long-acting anesthetic that my surgeons used. Like three days of reduced pain.
-
I’ve got two areas of pain that only hurt when I stand and walk around. One is where the drains used to be on the left side and the other is by my left TE towards the top of my sternum. I wish I had a pain patch that I could put on those two areas instead of having to take oral meds when they get too bad. I’m getting really tired of sleeping in a recliner, too. I want to be able to lay on my side comfortably again in my bed. But it is still just too tender to do it.
I have my appointments set up for next week. MO and PS on Thursday and RO on Friday. We shall see what everybody thinks are the next steps for me.
I hope all of you are doing well. This is not an easy process, that’s for sure, but we must keep moving forward. Positive vibes going out to all of you.
-
Mariett, I hear you. I'm scheduled for Thursday. My surgery is preventive, but I'm so worried about the pathology coming back with more than just the LCIS/ALH I've already been diagnosed yet. I will be devastated if cancer is found and I have to go under the knife again to have nodes removed. I just keep telling myself to take a deep breath and not to waste energy on things that haven't happened yet, but it's so hard not to worry and fret about it. I need all my energy at the moment for preparing for the surgery itself. I live alone, so have to everything I can to create a situation where I can do everything I need to do myself.

Hi all! Hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving (or regular week, for those not in the US). I'm doing pretty well with my recovery, but very sick of these darn drains, LOL! I'm up to walking 5 miles a day now which I think really helps. I'm a runner though, so I am longing for the day when my surgeon gives me the green light to start running again. She said I have to wait 4 more weeks for that. So, walking it is until then!
borogirl, how awesome you got your drains out after only 9 days! I'm hoping I'll get mine out at my 2 week follow-up on Tuesday, but I only have 2 drains doing the work of 4 drains, so they are still collecting quite a bit (about 30ccs / day now). I'm super-envious of your shower. I can't WAIT to take a shower!!!
Oya80, go easy on yourself. Your body has been through a lot! It's totally normal to feel wiped out from doing things you would normally consider routine. It is hard to resist holiday activities, though, I understand!
MCBaker, I also got the bupivacaine injection during surgery, and it really helped for about 2 days... then I needed the Percocet. But I was definitely thankful for those 2 days!
Debkap, so glad to hear your BMX went well and your nodes were clear! So sorry to hear you are struggling with pain. If it's unbearable, ask your doctor for a different pain med. You don't have to suffer!
RosieRed, I feel you - I also want to sleep on my side. I'm soooo tired of sleeping the recliner, but it's the only way that is comfortable-ish and keeps me from rolling over. Ugh! I miss my bed!
Kerri_Oz, I will keep my fingers crossed for you on Thursday! The good thing is that even if they do find cancer, it will probably not have spread. I had multiple cancer sites found in my BMX pathology, but my nodes were all clear, because it was all caught very early. Sounds like you have caught things early too, which is good!
-
My pain is more under control now. For those who haven't had their surgery yet, of you fill your prescriptions be sure to ask for regular bottle tops not child proof! I made that mistake and was constraints having to ask someone to open my meds. I have a lot of selling in my armpit area, more on the side they took the sentinel lymph nodes than the other but still find that I have to pay with my are on pillows beside me. Also I can't cut my food. I never realized how much we used or chest muscles! Sorry if there's typos... My glasses are not nearby
-
Evily, thanks
Yes, hopefully anything caught will be really early stages. Sounds like your recovery is going great! Walking 5 miles already. You go, girl
-
Evily- I hope I can be walking 5 miles a day that soon after my surgery, I know I’m going to be stir crazy! You rock!
-
Hi Evily! Wow! I am so happy to hear you’re doing so well-and I’m very inspired by your 5 mile walking! I’ve just been walking to the mailbox and back-ha! Well, I’ve been bopping around the house-walking around fine-but haven’t even thought about really walking somewhere! I am inspired to hoof it a little further now
I also have my first post-op appt. with my PS tomorrow-maybe I’ll get some news about drain removals (I have 2-putting out about 5ccs/less a day now).
I’m thankful for all of us!
-
I'm 12 days post op and I feel like I've turned a corner! My surgical sites (breast and lat/back) feel fine. However one of my drains is SUPER painful. It's oozing a little white pus and is red. I have an appointment tomorrow with my surgeon tomorrow so I figured I can wait it out. I'm on antibiotics, keeping the site clean, and monitoring for spreading redness and fever. I really want this drain pulled but it's still putting out 80-100 CC's a day. This is the only reason I'm taking any pain meds.
I love reading all of your stories and progress! Inspiring and I'm keeping all of you in my positive thoughts!!!
Oh...I pinned my drains to a long infinity scarf to hand around my neck! So much easier than pinning to shirts! Wish I'd done that earlier!
Heather

My drains are covered with antiseptic gel and are so thoroughly bandaged with transparent dress ing that I would be nuts.to mess with the site. My pain is up higher, pressure from my bra seems to bother it. I have heat o n it right now.
I was told to pin my drains to my bra and nothing else.
-
It's so crazy how surgeries and surgeons are so different. I had absolutely no dressings on after the first 5 days, no bra or compression, nothing. I might try to put some glad press n seal over my sites and really wash my upper body. No shower in 12 days is messing with me...more mentally than physically. I know my sponge baths are keeping me clean, but I really miss a shower.
-
Swelling on my cancer side and where they removed the lymph nodes has increased quite a bit today. I called my BS and she wasn't worried , said it was probably because I was up so much more today (4th day post op). The pressure had really increased the pain so I'm back in bed trying to get it all back under control. Tired of hurting and would love to just fast forward a week or two.
-
That is so funny how surgeons are all so different. Like Heatherautumn, all my dressings were removed early on (3 days post-op), and I was instructed on how to care for my drain insertion sites. I am also not allowed to wear a bra, unless it is very loose (I have a post-surgical bra that I I sometimes wear), but they would prefer I just wear a camisole with a shelf bra. My preferred attire is a zip up hoodie that has inner pockets that my drain bulbs fit perfectly in.
Heatherautumn, I hope your drain isn't too infected. Sounds like you are doing everything right, and it's good you'll get to the doc tomorrow.
Debkap, so sorry to hear you're having more pain today. Rest rest rest. Hope you feel better soon!
sugarmaple, I hope you get some of your drains out tomorrow! I have a post-op appointment tomorrow too, and am also hoping to get my drains out, but they're still getting about 30cc's/day, so I'm not sure I'm ready yet.
Hang in there everyone - we're all on the road to recovery and every day is a little better. :-)
-
I will try going braless tonight then. And quit trying to side-sleep.
-
I have been plastic wrapped ever since my surgery and was told to wear a sports bra. I currently still have on the stretchy bra they put on me. PS put in fluffy gauze to pad my incisions. I came out of surgery with 4 drains and all of them were taken out exactly one week after surgery. Glad to have gotten rid of those.
-
I ordered a pair of zip-front sports bras ye sterday. I hope they will be more comfortable than what they put me i n.
-
MC Baker, will you share brand if you end up liking them? I’m dreading the post surgery bra issue
-
Had my bilateral mastectomy on Friday a couple of the sentinel nodes on the right side showed cancer so they removed all the nodes on that side. I will know by my next appointment how many had cancer. So that means chemo in my future. I'm feeling good and pretty good movement in my arms. I haven't needed the heavy pain meds. I am just a bit stiff and sore. The back stiffness is the worst part.
-
Soma carries post surgical bras specifically for this. You may have to order on their website but they are incredibly soft and wireless and seem like they would be very comfortable. My PS has not recommended anything but a camisole.
Yesterday my swelling and pain really spikef. My daughter pointed out that the pectoral blocks probably wore off. It was day 4 which would be about right. I was also up a lot more and the doctor said the fluids spread differently. So I'm staying up for shorter periods since laying in bed semi upright seems to provide some relief. Still my chest feels like boulders, heavy and hard) , my armpits are so swollen I can't keep my arms at my side comfortably, and just to make this more fun I think I have a yeast infection from the antibiotics. Awesome.
