Had bilateral simple mastectomy yesterday
Hi everyone
Can't sleep. They kept me in over night home in the morning. I have 4 drains and I'm so afraid of them taking them out when it's time because so worried it will be painful. Also worried staples coming out will be horrible. Any positive stories on these 2 things? Less painful than u thought? I'm only 43 and will so reconstruction but not until probably June 2019. Going w implants I think.

Hope you are healing well. The drain removal was quick and painless. Everything is numb there now. I like to take an inquisitive approach to things so I asked the doctor to show them to me after she had removed them. Trust me the drain removal is no big deal. I can’t even remember if I had staples. I must have had something but that event was non eventful too. The only major pain I had was from the pectoral muscles having the expanders place beneath them and get too large of a fill. They’ve made big improvement in that regard in the past few years. At this point you won’t have to deal with that.

Dlittkemann- Hi there, I was in a different situation, as I had a UMX with direct to implant. Even with that I slept with what I now call my pillow fort. So many pillows to get comfortable!! Sleeping on and incline with a wedge pillow and many more to prop up my arm helped. I was a bit nervous to get my drain out, but it was painless, I think she just had a couple of sutures to snip before pulling it out. but I couldn't see that part. I would say stay up on a consistent routine with pain meds, my worse pain was day 1 and day 3. I had a pain block that wore off on day 3 and had some painful muscle spasms. The Valium they gave me for the muscle spasms really helped and allowed me to sleep better as well. I was trying to not take many pain meds, and that was a big mistake. It is easier to manage your pain before it gets out of control rather than playing catch up. and keep in mind the narcotics along with recent anesthesia will slow your bowels down so keep up with any instructions your doctor gave you in that regard. Did they give you exercises to do? as odd as it seems those ended up helping me.

dlittkemann, I see you've done chemo already. For me, surgery was easier than chemo - at least after the pain had settled down (around day 5 or 6), I could feel getting better with each day. With chemo I felt like being in a long dark tunnel where I couldn't see the end.
Don't worry about drain removal - I know you are probably in pain today, and drain removal is going to be just 10 seconds of the slightly heightened pain, then you will feel relieved because the drains will no longer be tugging at your skin.
I didn't have staple but regular sutures, I don't even remember how it felt when they took them out - might have been absolutely uneventful. I do remember drain removal, because I was slightly freaked out at how long the tube was when they removed it. Still, painwise it was probably a 6 or 7 for 10 seconds.Did they tell you if you can shower? I was allowed to shower 48 hours after the surgery, and I loved being under the warm water. It was cumbersome with drains, but it felt great to wash off the "hospital smell". Glad you are at home, and I promise after several days of pain, you will start feeling better. Take your pain meds when you need. I can also highly recommend NSAIDs if your surgeon agrees - for me Ibuprofen was working better than opiods, so I never took any for the exchange. I found opiods just taking the edge off the pain for me, not making it go away completely, and Ibuprofen did the same for me. There is also a lot of research that NSAIDs after surgery helps with healing faster.

I tried morphine. Makes me tired but not much help for pain so I just took Advil now. Thank u for the great info. So helpful. Yes chemo was like a long tunnel. Dark. For sure. I'm glad it's over and thankful for all the info you have all provided me with.

Hi dlittkemann,
I had a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction in Sept 2017. I came home with 4 drains. I really didn't have any pain when the drains came out. Farmerlucy is right. You are so numb there you barely feel a thing. I didn't have staples, I had stitches. But I really didn't feel them being removed. Maybe just a pinch or a tug when she was trying to pull them out. Nothing that was too uncomfortable.

oh wow. I will be doing reconstruction but later since I still have radiation too. Thank u for letting me know. I have 4 drains also and I'm so glad to hear not a lot of pain taking them out. Thank you again for helping me out.

Not a problem! And don't be surprised if your drains come out at different times. I had the top 2 drains come out first, then a week later the bottom 2 came out. So don't be alarmed if all 4 don't come out at once. It all depends on the amount of fluid output per drain.
