Radiation Induced Breast Fibrosis Prevention and Treatment
Hello,
I am looking to find some names of oncology doctors in Ontario, Canada that prescribe pentoxifylline for the prevention/treatment of radiation induced breast fibrosis.

I hope you find someone to help you. I am on Pentoxifylline 400mg three times per day and Vitamin E 400IU per capsule three times per day PLUS a specially Compounded Prescription Cream of Pentoxifylline and Vitamin E 5%/1%. It really helps me with controlling the tightness and I have ZERO side effects.

Hi,
Currently I am Pentoxifylline 400mg three times per day and Vitamin E 400IU per capsule twice daily. I have been on the medication for six months and will be seeing my RO for follow up appointment soon. I did my own research about this medication regime and then initiated a request with my RO. I was surprised to learn none of the RO's at the cancer centre prescribe this medication for radiation induced breast fibrosis. I have noted an improvement with the tightness and like you have had no side effects. Remaining on the medication is my goal, just not sure my RO will be willing to go along with this plan. I am trying to look at other options just in case.
Thank you for responding I appreciate hearing from yo

I don't know why they would be against prescribing this medication, which we know works for us, has research to back up our use, for the intractable, insoluble problem that ruins our quality of life, that they inflicted on us.
I mean, duh! They should stop being so backwards.

I was puzzled that this course of medication for treatment and prevention is not utilized more at the cancer centre where I am a patient. Equally puzzling is that I had to educate myself about the radiation induced breast fibrosis. My sense is that the focus with the radiation is about doing everything to eradicate the cancer and no focus on post radiation/post treatment.
The reading I have done about the pentoxifylline and vitamin e is that you need to stay on it for a couple years, actually one of the provinces in Canada(not Ontario)recommends three years to have maximum benefit and not have a rebound effect coming off too soon.
I have not come across anything about the cream you mentioned but will do some research on it.
I will keep you posted

I read a single case study on the Pentoxifylline 5% and Vitamin E 1% Specially Compounded Prescription Cream, which I got my doctor to prescribe for me. Here in the US there are many Compounding Pharmacists who can make it up. The link for the PM&R Journal doesn't seem to work anymore, not sure why not.
