Fibroadenoma deciding to grow?!?!

I'm confused by your latest post. Are you having it removed as your doctor recommends or are you going to watch it for another 3-4 months?
-
Summer, I will go to the specialist and see what she suggests regarding removal; I am open to that. From my understanding, the US report recommended another US in 3-6 months because I have many growths and several new ones since my previous US in 2015. So I will ask about that also.
-
I have seen the specialist today and am booked for surgery on 8th Nov - waiting for confirmation; was pretty surprised I could get in so quick! She was really great and kind. She said that while the lump is benign, the speed at which it's grown is a concern for her, and really thinks it's one lump, not two as indicated on US. She even said "I think they biopsied the wrong part". Eh!
-
Glad to hear you're able to get it done so soon!
-
me too! When she said "we can do it next Thursday" I almost fell over! I didn't ask her (prob should have) if they will test the lump after they remove, especially seeing as she thinks they didn't biopsy the right part.
I'm not afraid about having surgery (had almost 10 during my life) but I do feel a bit of discomfort about my breasts being touched and cut into. It's uncomfortable enough to have someone examine me while I'm awake...ah well, at least I'll be knocked out so will have no recollection!
It's interesting that I'm getting breast pain up the side and into my armpit again after I was examined. After I had my first US I had strong pain for over a week. I think this lump really doesn't like being touched...too bad, mate - you're about to see a lot more action!
-
What would be the point of removing it if they didn't do pathology on the tissue? Of course they will.
-
Maybe I'm just cynical, but after having spent my childhood and adolescence in and out of doctor's rooms and hospitals I've learned not to assume anything and to always ask. You are probably right, though!
-
surgery done! I am very tired and not in much pain yet. Seeing the doctor in a week.
-
I am glad everything went smoothly Sparrowhawk! Rest up and take care of yourself Thinking of you!
-
let us know how things go Sparrowhawk!
Lots of rest and healing now lov
-
Thank you! I'm so grateful to all of you - you have been such a help and support.
It's now getting more painful (even breathing is painful!), but the doc gave me some meds which should help. I didn't sleep well but the sleep I did get was good. I slept with my bra on and that made me more comfortable. I'm still trying to manage showering - the dressing is waterproof but I am trying to keep it as dry as I can.
-
continued prayers! Just wanted to say I’m thinking of you Sparrowhawk! Hang in there
-
Thanks so much! Pain is pretty constant now but I am diligently resting and taking some relief. The hospital kindly called me to see how I am. I'm doing pretty well actually! Happy and able to eat. This morning I was very tired and a bit confused but am now feeling a bit more energetic. I was able to help a little around the house which was great. My sisters really care for me (one drove me to and from hospital and another is helping me with chores which involve lifting and more movement). Plus the sun is shining and it's a glorious day, which is in itself enough to make me feel wonderful.

Sparrowhawk - I am glad to hear you are doing well. I hope for a speedy recovery for you. I am getting a excision biopsy on 11/29. I am getting inspired from the ladies that have had recent surgery that I have had communication with on this board, I am not as scared. So happy y'all have made it through and doing well.
Happy Healing!

I agree CasM! My excision is the 20th. It feels so nice to hear and talk to people who have actually done it. Inspiring for sure. Everyone on these forums are brave and inspiring.
-
Thank you!
Good luck and blessings to both of you. I totally agree; the advice and encouragement from people here has been amazing. I really didn't expect to have surgery so was feeling a bit anxious but others here helped me to feel better about it.
-
Hi Sparrowhawk! How are you doing? Any word from your biopsy? Been thinking about you. Hope all is well.
-
Hi! Thank you so much for your thoughts.
I went to the doctor. It turns out that my fibroadenoma was not a fibroadenoma at all, but a phyllodes tumour with some abnormality. I was VERY surprised as every single test I have had, including a core biopsy, had suggested fibroadenoma, but probably these things can't really be confirmed 100% until you see the whole thing. I did read somewhere that fibroadenomas can become PT (though rarely).
The surgeon said it's very good we removed it! She asked me just to keep an eye on the area and go for repeat screening as it can come back, especially as they did not leave a big surgical margin (only 5mm, probably because she thought it was just fibroadenoma). I am quite relieved. And relieved too that my suspicions about it being one lump, not two, were confirmed. Sometimes I really felt that I wasn't taken seriously by doctors regarding my concerns, probably because it wasn't cancer, and here I did actually have a problem.
-
Thanks for updating us Sparrowhawk. I’m glad you finally have some peace of mind regarding your growing fibroadenoma. I had a repeat core needle biopsy for my growing / changing fibroadenoma. It came back as “findings consistent with a fibroadenoma”so I’m back to follow-up imaging in 6 months. At that time I may see if I can go ahead with a lumpectomy like you did. Hope you’re doing well and recovering quickly post surgery.
-
Best of luck to you, EllieRed! If your fibroadenoma is still causing you problems you may want to consider removal. If you have any questions feel free to send me a message and I'll do my best to help.
Yes, it's just a relief to have it out, especially as it turned out to be a kind of tumour which grows very aggressively. The doctor and I were both really surprised it wasn't a fibroadenoma!
-
Wow! Thank goodness you kept up with it and now it is gone. Good luck!
-
Thanks so much. I compared my post-op pathology results with my ultrasound results, and in just under a month it had grown substantially. Hope and pray all goes well for you.
-
Thank you. My lumpectomy is Tues. Not really nervous, just anxious to get it over with. Was the lump you had taken out previously biopsied as a fibroadenoma? And it became a phyllodes? Or it just thought as a FA from the U/S?
Just so weird how mine started out so round and smooth. It never changed in almost 4 yrs. I always felt it good with my SBE. Just like a grape, right there, didnt even have to search for it. Over last couple months, i have to "look" for it and it is so odd shaped. These FAs can be so finicky lol. Ugh...just can't wait to get it done and move on. 😊
-
I had the lump for 7 years, with not much change until this year (which is a noted feature of PT). I had a core biopsy which concluded it was a 'suspected fibroadenoma'. Since read that phyllodes are more or less indistinguishable from FA on U/S, and even in a core biopsy as they're a combination of cells.
I also read that it's possible, but rare, for a FA to become a phyllodes. I don't know if that's what happened with me, as my first biopsy on it was this year and the previous two U/S I had said it was for sure FA.
Really wishing you all the best. Please do update when you can. I hope all good things for you.

Sparrow,
I've been reading your posts as well and am so glad you took ownership of your own health and had things checked out. I have been reading about benign tumors and growth and that's what brought me to you.
I had flat epithelial atypia with atypical ductal hyperplasia removed from my right breast last November after an abnormal mammogram. Prior to the surgery, they did an MRI to rule out anything else before they moved forward. This led to one little spot on the left that they wanted to monitor - oval and circumscribed, about 6x4x5mm but with interesting kinetics. My 6 month follow up left me with reassurance as nothing had really changed on either side. I just had my 12 month follow up and this little booby bean is now 10x6x7mm with rapid uptake and washout kinetics. I have an MRI biopsy scheduled for November 29.
I have tried to find all kind of articles about benign tumors or lumps that can grow and the 'what ifs' are enough to drive you absolutely crazy. Of course everything we read points toward an unfavorable outcome so it's hard to rule out the possibility that some of us will end up in that small % bracket where it does end up being malignant.
Best of luck to you moving forward
I hope you're feeling much better now that a bit of time has passed. Wishing you peace.

Mystic, thank you. It can be easy to get dissuaded or put off by others saying it's not a big deal. Initially I wasn't very concerned because I have a history of fibroadenomas, though knowing one lump had just doubled in size did make me wonder. But then I felt and saw changes in my breast so knew in my gut there was something more than a simple fibro.
I am wishing you all the best with your bean, especially on the 29th. I've been in "what if" land the past few days and it's not really a nice place. With my rare stuff there are a lot of what ifs. I have one important person in my life whom I still need to tell that I have a clear diagnosis. I'm serious about not spreading news until I have decent facts, and to the people who need to know. l am seeing my parents over the weekend, and am encouraging them to ask me any questions they may have - not sure how best I can answer them, though. My parents are great at keeping info to themselves, but knowing my family news will spread and then suddenly 543 people know.
Blessings to you and take care of yourself.
