I just had my first mammogram at 48 years old and have been asking for one for 10 years but was never given one cause I was too young. Well now I have two suspicious areas. One is 1cm and the other is 2 cm in size both on right breast. I can’t remember what my wording was when I went for my results but what are the chances that both are okay? Slim to none. I have another mammogram and ultrasound booked for nov 28. But I am now referred to a breast clinic in the city. 1 is more suspicious cause my NP says its jagged not smooth. This is so crazy. The waiting is intense and hard. It’s on my mind every waking moment. I just wanna cry all the time. But I have to be strong and stay positive.

Teegrass, my cancer was found at my annual mammogram (not my first) and I had no symptoms, so I can relate to your shock and surprise. One important thing for you to remember is that any time a radiologist sees something suspicious on a mammogram, he/she refers to the previous mammogram - was the suspicious whatever there a year ago, has it grown? Since this is your first mammogram, there's nothing for the doctor to compare it to. The unknowns are all scary, I know! It does sound like you have a good team in place to give you some answers. My advice for you for the next few weeks is to try and stay busy- binge watch a new TV show, check out a big pile of mysteries from the library, start knitting a sweater... whatever your favorite hobbies are. Be careful with the internet. There is a TON of info out there and not all of it is accurate. Once you have a diagnosis, even it it ends up being a benign cyst, you can then search for info that pertains to your own situation. There's lots of support here; hopefully you have family and friends you can rely on. I brought my husband to my initial appointments with my surgeon, medical oncologist and radiation oncologist. It was nice to have the support and a second set of ears. And finally (this is the hard part), try and take things day by day. Good luck- check back and let us know what happens!

teegrass, welcome to Breastcancer.org. We know at this point the waiting is truly one of the hardest parts, and it's especially hard to keep your mind off the worst. Try to keep busy the next few days, and please keep us posted on how it goes. Good luck, we're thinking of you!
