Weight loss plateau? Advice on how to break through?
Hi, all!
Inspiring to read all these threads. Keeping weight off is NOT easy.
I routinely gain about 7 lbs over summertime- kids home/cooking all the time , cook-outs, a glass of white wine, ice cream, etc....It adds up and by September 1 I’m up those pounds.
Normally I use calorie tracker, steer clear of trigger foods and exercise extra and I can drop those pounds quickly.
But not this year! I am almost 50 and gosh if I am not having a really hard time losing it using my usual methods!!!
Is it the aging process? Does it get harder as we age? (Not that it’s ever easy) i have been diligently tracking every morsel I eat, and seem to have plateaued. I exercise about 4 days a week and really would have hard time kicking that up long term. I also adjusted the allowed calories on my diet tracker - less calories to reach goal faster. It is not fun!
Anyone else have reach a stop like this in weight loss? And how did you get past it? Any advice is appreciated. I have 2 pounds to go to get to pre-summer weight and 6 pounds to goal weight.
Thanks!!

I have a fitbit and am using the fitbit ap on my phone/computer. It tracks my exercise/movement automatically and I log in the food. You pick how much weight you want to lose & choose how fast you want to lose it & then tells you how many calories you should eat each day. The best thing about it is that if I go over the calories, I can walk (or do some other exercises) until I get back into my right calorie range. It works GREAT (as long as I do it religiously......there in lies the rub!).

I've got one name for you: Gary Taubes.
Go to YouTube and watch one of his one hour presentations on the chemistry of fat storage. Carbohydrates trigger insulin secretion. Insulin causes fat storage. That's it. The great mystery belying the gazillion dollar weight loss industry exposed. There is a ton of science to support this theory.
Try a low carb diet for three weeks and you'll be hooked—without feeling hungry.

thanks! I track calories and move plenty- so maybe that’s not issue? Inherently in restricting by calorie, a lot of carbs get restricted, along with sugar- but I can do better.
I think I get tons of inflammation with carbs and gluten, so I’m going to start there. When I cut back, my rings finally fit. Only a few pounds to go, but looking towards keeping them off forever, ice cream summer treats no more!!!
Appreciate your advice!

Keeping your carbs between 50-80 grams per day should lead to effortless weight loss. Wheat & grains are jam packed not only with gluten & carbs, but high levels of phytates and lectins (inflammatories). It's really too bad, because other than that (lol) they have an impressive nutritional profile. Ah food paradoxes....highly annoying. If you want support, tips and fun come on over to the Paleo Pals thread.....we're always chasing down carbs and extra poundage

Just wanted to update several months later! Lost the summer weight by tracking calories and adding more cardio- took forever!! I think the trick is to really be careful next summer.
In the meantime, I tried a dry January, and also went low carb. To my surprise, lost 2-3 pounds without restricting calories or starving.
Have added in a dessert once a week, a cocktail on occasion, and so far so good! My body just loves inflammation it appears and I’m better off just eliminating all those triggers.
I just need to remember this is a lifestyle change and not a diet

I found reducing carbs while increasing protein and doing resistance exercise/weights once a week worked for me.

Two words: intermittent fasting . It works.
-
Agree totally with intermittent fasting. I cut sugar last Aug...started what I guess they call dirty keto and have lost close to 60#. Very effortless. Usually my intermittent fasting schedule is 18 hours fasting and 6 hr eating window.
-
Agree. I eat between 12 noon and 8 pm.

I lost probably 6 pounds of fat, 8 pounds total weight. And I never consciously cut calories. I became much more mindful of what I ate because I knew I only had 6-8 hours to do it. I tried to pack in as much protein and quality food during those hours and snacked a lot less. YMMV. It worked for me.

what is intermittent fasting??

did you allow coffee/tea before noon? I don’t think i could do it without coffee with cream
