Birad4
my mom went for a mammogram on Thursday and was called back that afternoon. She went the next day to re-image her left breast and the final report read: 8mm cluster of microcalcificarions found in upper outer quadrant that appears to be in a linear pattern with some pleomorphic appearance. Stereotatic core needle biopsy is recommended....it was rated at a birad 4 for "suspicious". Has anyone had a similar report that came back benign?? Im so worried...we already have had a horrible couple years with my son (my mom's grandson) who was diagnosed with retinoblastoma...I'm really scared and worried...any advice is greatly appreciated.

I'm sure there are, but most people who get benign results move on and are no longer on the discussion boards. Overall, with no subcategory, a Birads 4 is about 80% chance of being benign-anywhere in a range from 3% up to 95% being cancer. The "linear" and "pleomorphic" is a little more concerning, but we'd just be guessing. Try not to get too far ahead of yourself at this point. The only way to know is the biopsy. When the radiologist pretty much knowsit is going to be cancer they tend to go ahead and tell you they believe it is.

thanks for your reply...when you say we'd just be guessing, are you referring to the radiologist guessing? I wasn't with my mom so I'm not sure what happened during her appointment, but she did say the radiologist did not speak with her. The sonographer took the images and said that the doctor will discuss with her. But she reassured her not to worry as this is common. But im 😟...I know I shouldn't Google..and I cant help myself but Google. My son was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma in July 2017...so cancer has already scarred me. My anxiety is up the roof.
Thank you for your reply though...it gave me some comfort seeing those odds..

No, I'm referring to the people on this discussion board, not the radiologist.
Stop googling. You can make yourself sick for weeks over something that turns out to be nothing. It isn't helpful.

Okay..thank you 🙏

It's a scary time, waiting for results. I am one who needs to research. I need to understand what I'm facing so I know what questions to ask. So it's totally understandable that you want to explore all of this. Unfortunately, from everything I have read and the people I have talked to, there is no clear way to know anything until the biopsy results are in.
All the scary words listed still could turn out to be B9.
If you are like me and doing the research and asking the questions makes you feel more prepared then keep doing it. But even I reach a limit when the information starts to weigh on me. That's when I know I need to put the mouse down and go about living. So, try not to make yourself too crazy along the way.
If it helps, create a document with all the questions you think of to ask the Breast Surgeon or Doctor. Create file folders on the computer or physically and start saving your articles you find, links, information, etc. This sort of thing helps me feel like I'm doing something productive while waiting.
My journey started in August and I had my first biopsy this past Thursday. So it has been awhile and I've done a lot of research. If it's B9 that's great. The research I've done could end up relevant for myself or someone I know somewhere down the line. I will find out the biopsy results Oct.31 so now it's a matter of keeping busy and waiting.
I had about a 6mm cluster of amorphous, slightly irregular, grouped microcalcifications in the right breast in the lower outer quadrant. I was given a Birad score of 4 (no a, b, c). There was a significant increase in microcalcifications since my previous mammogram at the end of 2016. No one told me then that I had birad 3 microcalcifications and that I needed to go back in 6 months. I missed my mammogram in 2017 and it was basically almost 2 years in between mammograms.
I am hoping the best for your mom. Keep us posted. The odds are still in our favor, even with the scary words on the reports. Good luck!

Sherri, thank you so much for your words of encouragement...it means a lot. Its been a really rough couple years for my family...my baby was diagnosed with a rare eye cancer..lost his eye at 5 months old...so I've been pretty depressed...and when this news came about...my anxiety flared up the roof. I really hope and pray for benign results for both you and my mom...🙏 keep me posted...I'll be thinking of you on the 31st.

So sorry to hear about your baby
That is so hard. There really aren't words to help someone feel less anxious. Just try to do the things that bring you a little peace while you wait for results.
Thank you for your prayers!

Sherri, did you have a consultation with the breast surgeon before the biopsy? We are scheduled for one on Monday. I'm going with my parents ...
-
Yes. I had the initial appointment with the breast surgeon and then I had another appointment because I had an ultrasound done (after the first appointment) since none was done at the time of my mammogram and I was having some pain.

Hi TalBirad4
I had a BI-RAD 4 mammogram (10/11) and then a stereotactic biopsy (10/17). The pathology came back from the biopsy (10/22) as atypical lobular hyperplasia (ALH) which is a pre-cursor to BC. It is a benign condition and I was told the condition gives you a higher risk for BC. I will see a breast surgeon 10/29 and I have been told by my GYN and DJMAMMO (a radiologist that is a member of the community) that ALH is typically removed via an excision biopsy. The excision biopsy is to remove the atypical cells as well as to see if there is any other BAD cells that may be hiding in the area.
I just wanted to share another journey with you. Believe me I have been SUPER stressed the past few weeks and it is worrisome.
However, try not to worry to much for your mother (she is probably also worried), if anything can ease both of your minds is the fact she has caught it early which is the best thing that she can do at this moment in time. This thought helps me !!
