Fibroadenoma drastically change shape?

4 years ago I had a core biopsy to diagnose a fibro adenoma. Never worried about it after, no issues. It was shaped like the "infinity symbol", very oval and round. A few months ago I started having, off and on, some burning and pulling feelings in the nipple/upper breast area. The past few weeks it has become more consistent and tender to touch the area. My GP sent to me to a surgeon to get his opinion. He pulled up my latest imaging and he said "This is the weirdest, ugliest adenoma I have ever seen". It was not in the round/oval shape anymore. It has "legs and arms", big and small. He compared it to previous scans and it has completely changed shape. He is doing a wire excision on the 20th.

I assume the change of shape is what is causing the discomfort, although doc said he doesn't know for sure if it is.

I am just curious if anyone else has had their adenomas do this? And did it cause issues, hide anything, etc.?

Hi. I'm planning to have a fibroadenoma removed next week. I've had it for seven years and over that time it's grown but not weirdly. A couple of months ago I noticed a new lump growing either from it or right next door. The lump sprang up almost overnight and since then I've had pain in the lump, particularly around my cycle (previously no significant pain in breasts). When I had a US the technician wasn't sure if it was one lump or two, so she documented as two. The 7yo fibro had also changed shape. The specialist who will perform my surgery says she's pretty sure it's all one lump. Measures just under 5cm and looks like a dumbbell.

    Best of luck to you!

Hi Sparrow. I read your posts in the other thread. Sounds like you have alot going on! Wishing you the best of luck. I hope the removal goes smoothly. I would love to hear how you make out, feeling afterwards, etc.

I'm not really worried too much, since I know mine was biopsied a couple years as a fibroadenoma. My surgeon and I were jist surprised how much it changed shape. Curious how common that is.

Thank you and good luck to you!

Thanks so much! Yes, there's a lot going on. Besides the new growth sprouting out of the old one, my fibroadenoma has gone from being oval shaped to having inconclusive, lobulated borders. They also found that there is increased vascularity. As far as I know, besides having other new growths which were pretty clearly fibroadenomas, my existing fibroadenomas look more or less the same as they did before.

I'm not sure how common it is, but I personally think it's better to err on the side of caution where health is concerned. Those changes and the unusual strong pain are motivating me not to mess around and to just get the thing out.

I agree. Best to remove, especially with the discomfort. I never worried about it until the pain and burning started. Let's take them put and be done with these pesky things!

But seriously fingers crossed for you!

Me neither! Never really thought about my fibroadenomas at all until I felt a new growth and started getting pain. All best to you too 😊
