Fibroadenoma deciding to grow?!?!

Summer, I will go to the specialist and see what she suggests regarding removal; I am open to that. From my understanding, the US report recommended another US in 3-6 months because I have many growths and several new ones since my previous US in 2015. So I will ask about that also.

I went to the doctor. It turns out that my fibroadenoma was not a fibroadenoma at all, but a phyllodes tumour with some abnormality. I was VERY surprised as every single test I have had, including a core biopsy, had suggested fibroadenoma, but probably these things can't really be confirmed 100% until you see the whole thing. I did read somewhere that fibroadenomas can become PT (though rarely).

The surgeon said it's very good we removed it! She asked me just to keep an eye on the area and go for repeat screening as it can come back, especially as they did not leave a big surgical margin (only 5mm, probably because she thought it was just fibroadenoma). I am quite relieved. And relieved too that my suspicions about it being one lump, not two, were confirmed. Sometimes I really felt that I wasn't taken seriously by doctors regarding my concerns, probably because it wasn't cancer, and here I did actually have a problem.

Yes, it's just a relief to have it out, especially as it turned out to be a kind of tumour which grows very aggressively. The doctor and I were both really surprised it wasn't a fibroadenoma!

Thanks so much. I compared my post-op pathology results with my ultrasound results, and in just under a month it had grown substantially. Hope and pray all goes well for you.

I had the lump for 7 years, with not much change until this year (which is a noted feature of PT). I had a core biopsy which concluded it was a 'suspected fibroadenoma'. Since read that phyllodes are more or less indistinguishable from FA on U/S, and even in a core biopsy as they're a combination of cells.

I also read that it's possible, but rare, for a FA to become a phyllodes. I don't know if that's what happened with me, as my first biopsy on it was this year and the previous two U/S I had said it was for sure FA.

Mystic, thank you. It can be easy to get dissuaded or put off by others saying it's not a big deal. Initially I wasn't very concerned because I have a history of fibroadenomas, though knowing one lump had just doubled in size did make me wonder. But then I felt and saw changes in my breast so knew in my gut there was something more than a simple fibro.

I am wishing you all the best with your bean, especially on the 29th. I've been in "what if" land the past few days and it's not really a nice place. With my rare stuff there are a lot of what ifs. I have one important person in my life whom I still need to tell that I have a clear diagnosis. I'm serious about not spreading news until I have decent facts, and to the people who need to know. l am seeing my parents over the weekend, and am encouraging them to ask me any questions they may have - not sure how best I can answer them, though. My parents are great at keeping info to themselves, but knowing my family news will spread and then suddenly 543 people know.
