Im so disappointed :(( 2 tumors
Im so disappointed, the mammogram and images showed only 1 tumor small (1.4 cm) type IDC. after lumpectomy, the doctor shocked me saying he found another tumor (0,8cm) DCIS and he removed it. How this happen? how the surgon found it during the surgery and not in images!!!!!! he also mentioned a node but not lymph node something else not sure which node he found. The sential nodes are clean.

As I have learnt, the really small tumors are not always visible in imaging especially when the breast is dense. I had extensive DCIS and only in surgery was IDC found. DCIS is also not always easy to spot as it can be scattered. Mine was scattered in many places across a my right breast. What are the next steps in your treatment? Wish you all the best.

After my mammogram and ultrasound they told me that there was one 2.8 cm tumor that was highly suspicious of malignancy and other suspicious area that could be nothing but an artifact. When they did the biopsies, they found that the second suspicious area was cancerous tumor and a slightly different cancer from the other tumor. When they biopsied a suspicious area on the OTHER breast they said it was just cystic changes. I ended up having a double mastectomy and after that they also found 4cm of ductal carcinoma in-situ (that was a higher Grade than my tumors) and pre-cancerous changes in my other breast. So, initial diagnoses are not always accurate - even those they find on an initial biopsy. And you can different cancers in the same breast - I had three different cancers in one breast and precancer in the other! I'm finding out the diagnosing cancer is not an exact science.

Cbmom3 are you doing any other treatments? Radiation, Chemo? Indeed it is not an exact science. That is the most scary part for me.

I am wondering if in-situ is harder to see than invasive cancers on mammograms. My SIL had in-situ in both breasts one side only discovered after bmx. Also a friend had DCIS 10 centimeters before seen on routine scan.

My original path report from biopsy said I had both IDC & DCIS. It also noted density of breast makes it difficult to determine how much of tumor sample was invasive vs in situ.
Path from LX said 6mm IDC; scattered foci of DCIS solid type, 15mm.

I too was dx with DCIS after lumpectomy. First they say said it was IDC tumor, found 3 of them, one spot of lobular and DCIS all through the the mass. I was wondering if DCIS is hard to spot as well and wonder then about the other breast. I have been told mastectomy is my best option. I have no idea if I will have to have radiation, chemo or what.

Hi flowerlover, I was diagnosed with extensive DCIS. The pathologist said it was difficult to find it all in surgery and that's how I ended up doing radiation after mastectomy. It is very sneaky DCIS. Especially in dense breasts.
Wishing you all the best with your journey!
