2 or 3 biopsies?? What should my daughter do?
Update: A breast care clinic where my daughter attends college, after reading her ultrasound results, says they advise only 2 biopsies are necessay. One on each side. The left side has 2 supposedly fibroadenomas inthe same quadrant so that’s why that dr said 3 wasn’t necessary. Thoughts or experience on this? I want to be viligant for my daughter’s sake but also 3 core needles sound awful. I am also disappointed no one responded to my first writing. Feeling anxious and would appreciate any support or advice you could give. Thanks.
Hello, I am brand new to this community and so grateful for finding it. My sister has fought breast cancer and I have had numerous fibroadenomas. Now my stressed-out college daughter has had 3 masses ultrasounded and now needs 3 core needle biopsies. I have had one before. They are not horrible but not pleasant either. My heart is breaking that she has to endure 3! They will not give her anything else besides the local. How can you get laughing gas when you visit the dentist, but there is nothing we can give to people in this extreme situation? Has anyone else had multiple biopsies in one visit? I am wondering if she should just get them surgically removed so she doesn't have to endure all the biopsies. Also, best case scenario, even if they turn out benign, she still has 3 breast lumps to now follow up with/watch. I'm just struggling since this is my child. I feel like I have enough biopsy history where she should get a pass.
. Thanks in advance for any help/ insight you can provide

Hi Sandollar and sorry it's taking awhile to get a reply. Honestly, after the painkiller is injected (which admittedly is a bit painful) the number of biopsies doesn't matter since she her breasts will be good and numb. I am guessing that your sister's history is making them extra vigilant. And in the "good news" department, odds of breast cancer in her case are low and she will have good baseline data for the future.
Let us know how it goes.

Hi,
I am a mom of 2 daughters so I know how you must feel! Stay calm and that will help her to be!
I agree, that once numb, it wont matter much if 2 are biopsied, or 3. The followup will be the same, -probably an ice pack and tylenol.
I was 22 and had a fibroadenoma removed surgically, but these days they dont do that. Now they just leave them alone, or as your daughter is doing, have a core biopsy.
She will be FINE!! Take a deep breath!

Hi Sanddollar7,
If this is a clinic provided by the university, maybe a second opinion from another practice would be a good idea. Since she is so young, it might be advisable for you to contact a local Surgical Breast Oncologist, and have them look at the information. Ultimately If it was me, I would be more cautious than not. I know you are very anxious for her but hang in there, she will need you as her calming guide through this process!

I'm always a proponent of better safe than sorry so I would say biopsy all 3. Just because there are 2 in one breast does not mean they are the same. Better yet, have them excised that way there is no doubt about whether they got a good sample or not. Her age is on her side for sure. Hope it all goes smoothly and comes back benign.

I just had 2 and would do another one if they needed
to make sure. Good luck, praying for You and Your Sister.

Thank you all. ( In front of her, I’m strong and like let’s take this head on! But then back at home 2 hours away I’m a mess.) I agree with everything you all say and makes me feel better. So glad this community exists. Thanks for taking the time to reach out.

I also would try to get all 3 biopsied, might as well if they are already in there. I also agree that once you're numb, it's not a big deal. The biopsy itself is actually pretty quick
