I am a 2 yr DCIS/IDC survivor and had my mammogram for both breasts yesterday. The radiologist informed me that all was ok with my mammogram, however, she was recommending that I get an MRI of my breasts because of my personal history of BC and my family history (my Mom died of BC in 1976). What information will an MRI provide that the mammogram didn't? Is this test covered by most medical insurances?

I was diagnosed with Pagets and DCIS last October. Neither showed up on a mammogram or an ultra sound but both were very visible on the MRI. My insurance paid half the cost of the MRI. If anything having it done will give you piece of mind.

    Hi Celand,

While you wait for some helpful responses, you may be interested in reading the main Breastcancer.org site's section on Breast MRI which can help explain why your doctor may be recommending this.

    We hope this helps!

My IDC and positive lymph node didn't show on 3D mammogram or ultrasound, but were visible on MRI.

Thank you to all that replied, I found the article quite informative. I received my copy of mammogram report in the mail and radiologist recommended breast MRI 6 months from mammogram but leaves it up to me stressing that it is not mandatory. Now, also in the report she says the reason for her recommendation is that my lifetime risk of bc returning is 35% according to the Gail Model. When I looked this up, I saw that it was not for ladies with a history of bc and dcis. Is there another Gail Model? Also, Oncatype DX score was 5, so this predicts my recurrence rate as low? Which test is correct? Would this be something to ask my medical oncologist, who I have an appointment with this Friday?
