Confusing biopsy result?
Hi everyone. So I've had quite the month. Over the summer I underwent genetic testing because of a family history of breast cancer on my dad's side. Two of my aunts were diagnosed with DCIS in their 40s and my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer (unknown type) at age 27. I tested positive for the NBN mutation, which is a relatively newly discovered mutation. Because of that, my doctor recommended that I start screening at age 35 (I'm 29 right now), but we decided to do an initial MRI just to get a baseline. I had the MRI about a month ago, which showed an area of architectural distortion.
My doctor immediately sent me for a mammogram and ultrasound. The ultrasound didn't show anything, but the mammogram showed a mass with architectural distortion. The radiologist was extremely concerned and more or less told me I had cancer. The following week, I had a biopsy and the results came back inconclusive because they weren't sure that they took samples from the correct spot based on the clip placement. So I underwent another biopsy and just recently got the results.
The official finding is "benign breast tissue with extensive proliferative fibrocystic changes." The report notes that the MRI and mammographic images remain concerning and surgical consultation is recommended. Basically, my doctor is adamant that I get this area removed ASAP. But it's benign, so I'm a bit confused as to why this is still a negative finding. I'm getting married in two weeks, but I have a few surgical consults set up for when I return from my honeymoon.
Has anyone else had a diagnosis similar to this?

I'm so sorry you've had such a time of it. My own issues are different to yours, but I can understand your concerns. Perhaps there is more caution in your case because of your family history and the discovered mutation. I wish you all the very best and congratulations on your wedding!

JLVford if it helps get a second opinion . I don't know if you have access to a center that specializes only in breast cancer or not. The positive thing is that you have doctors that are following you closely. Early detection is key. Interesting that you began with an MRI. I went the opposite route, had a standard mammogram and ultrasound that were undiagnostic, but the MRI found my issue.

I just had 2 areas biopsied and both came back benign but will be having wire guided excision. So much going on in right breast that radiologist thinks should be further investigated. I am all for it, if there is anything there I would rather catch it early. Hopefully nothing for either of us. Could just be we have very.busy boobs, lol. Try not to let worry drive you nuts and congrats and enjoy honeymoon.

Hi! I'm new to this community and new to everything. My story so far is I had a routine mammogram, which led to a recall visit which resulted in another mammogram and a core biopsy. They found an architectural distortion in my right breast. So, I received my results today. The diagnosis is inconclusive so I have to have a surgical biopsy in 2-3 weeks time. What does B3b mean? I of course am anxious, but would love more information if anyone can help.

Jlv, congratulations on getting married!
For me, mammogram missed everything, but i have very dense breast tissue. Ultrasound showed abnormal mass with suspicious details. Like jlv and suny, my MRI showed architectural distortion as well as other findings of concern. I was sent for ultrasound guided biopsy. My result was atypical epithelial proliferation (benign) and excisional surgery was recommended. I wanted to avoid surgery and opted for a second opinion. They determined it was lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) grade 2 and atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH). These are still benign diagnoses. I will be scheduling recommended excisional surgery this month.
Tbk and suny, looks like we're all riding on the same bus! Bosom buddies
Tbk, lol to busy boobs comment
My left boob looked so busy, probably had radiologist working overtime lol
ETA: I felt the first biopsy result was vague. Doctor I saw for second opinion reviewed all previous reports and I now have more specific answers. Peace and good luck to everyone on these boards.
