I've been on anastrazole for 11 months now and just noticed my middle finger on one hand is getting stiff, feels a bit swollen and it pops sometimes when I open my hand. It hasn't gotten bad enough where I want to call my oncologist (I see her in February and will ask then) so I was wondering if any of you that have had it have any self-help methods that work for you. Thanks so much

Not meds, but when Tamoxifen gave me trigger thumb, my PT pointed me to some exercises online (sorry, I no longer remember where) and did a couple of ultrasound treatments in the office. These took care of it.

ksusan - Thanks. I did a little research online and was seeing conflicting info. Some said get a splint and use at night to keep it straight and let it heal. Others said do special exercises. What are ultrasound treatments?

Dear Ellyn, I had the same problems after one year on letrozole. An elastic therapeutic tape was the thing that finally helped me cope with the pain in my trigger thumb. I've been on these antihormonals for 5 years now, and the painful stiffness has not recurred so far. Hope it helps. Gudrun

The exercises I did were stretches with the fingers against a table. I can't find a description easily, but ultrasound therapy involves the medical person rubbing a handheld ultrasound wand over the area. I don't know precisely how this work, but I figured I'd try it before an injection, and it seemed to help.

ETA: This is for arthritis, but may give you some ultrasound therapy language: http://mpap.vch.ca/wp-content/uploads/sites/16/2015/10/Best-Practise-Recommeondations-for-Management-of-Flexor-Tenosynovitis-in-Rheumatoid-Arthritis.pdf

I have trigger thumb after 6 mos on exemestane. Every morning, I soak left hand in hot water and massage thumb/palm for about 10 min to loosen it. Afterwards I have complete thumb flexibility with no pain. It will start to stiffen and hurt by evening, but I'm noticing the pain is somewhat less and flexibility better each day, so hoping can fix problem with time.

Nevertheless, I see all my docs next month and will bring up ultrasound therapy.

Thanks so much everyone. I guess if it hurts enough I'll have to bring it up and possibly get some physical therapy. I looked online at Walgreens for "therapeutic tape" to see if they had any and one of them stated "Cancer patients should not use KT tape as it may interfere with treatment." so I guess I'm not going to try that on my own. In the meantime I'll look into exercises and maybe soaking/massaging it. Right now my right hand (where the trigger finger is) just feels tight, like when you eat alot of salt. Left hand is fine. Thanks again ladies :)

I've had several trigger fingers but all before I ever had cancer. I saw a hand surgeon and started out with xrays and then cortisone injections to shrink the swollen tendon. While this worked for awhile, I ended up having surgery to open up the tendons and that solved the problem. Not having enough space for the tendon to glide through can cause permanent damage. It was a very easy, 1/2 hr surgery but took about a month for it to heal each time.

However, if your trigger fingers are caused by the anti hormonal meds only then I wonder if the problem would reverse itself after getting off the meds. I realize your asking, what can I do to manage this and that these meds are long term. Maybe get a referral to orthopedics. I know how painful these can be. At least in my case, exercising a swollen tendon would have only made it worse.
