Period lasting 3+ weeks after double mastectomy

I underwent a double mastectomy in April at age 51. For the year preceding the surgery my periods were becoming increasingly irregular which made sense given my age; I assumed I was approaching menopause. The length of time between periods became longer and longer, and the periods were getting shorter and shorter. I had heard that post-mastectomy there might be hormonal changes due to the loss of breast tissue which might cause more changes to my menstrual cycle, and I read that periods sometimes cease altogether as a result. I am not on tamoxifen or any other drug that would have hormonal effects. Now, five months post-surgery, I have had my period for more than three weeks with no end in sight. Has anyone else experienced lengthy periods after having a mastectomy? I am making an appointment with my doctor today but was just curious if anyone else had this experience.

LisaK12, I didn't have that happen after my mastectomies but it's happened to me at times of high stress, which is what could be happening with you. It's a good idea to see your doctor though.

My period finally ended after four weeks and I went to the gynecologist. Pelvic exam was normal, still waiting for pap smear results though. He did not think an ultrasound or other tests were necessary. He said it's possible that it was the last period I will ever have (fingers crossed) because sometimes the very last one can be longer than usual, although four full weeks is not common.

But definitely go to the gynecologist to rule out anything serious.
