Disconcordance between 2 test results so further testing
Dear all,
I am a 43 year old woman whose mother was diagnosed with BC at the age of 48. I am having an annual mammo and echo. Had my last mammo and echo late August; Mammo was fine, echo showed bilateral dilated ducts and a small lesion of 5 mm by 6 mm in my left breast. The radiologist told me that it was probably a build-up of debris within a dilated duct and decided to do a fine-needle aspiration. She also asked me did I have any nipple discharge. I never noticed but when she squeezed my breast some greenish discharge came out (to my absolute horror!). She did a smear test of the discharge. Lesion was rated Birads4a.
A few days later results came in via my GP: smear test negative for atypical cells. Lesion was considered to be hyperplasia thus benign based upon fine needle aspiration. Upon my own initiative and not liking the idea that something in my breast was causing discharge, I contacted the hospital again and asked for a consult with a breast specialist. I had my appointment on September 28th. The specialist told me that in view of my family history and the tests being inconclusive he would like to do further testing. How so inconclusive? I was not even aware there was an issue... According to him, my images probably show a fibroadenoma or papilloma and pathology indicates hyperplasia. Ideally, all results should point into the same direction. So, I am having a MRI tonight and a core biopsy on Monday. Normally all results should be in on Tuesday. I am scheduled to see a breast surgeon then... Feeling so scared! Are they just being thorough or is there more to it? I can only calm my self down by thinking that at least the discordance is between two benign conditions (for the time being at least) and that if things turn out bad, the lesion is only 5 by 6 mm so it is hopefully caught very early.

We usually worry about the bloody and clear discharge more than the other colors.
Here is a post on the subject: https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/83/topics...
Let us know what the MRI shows.

Had the MRI. Lesion is visible on MRI as well as on ultrasound. Radiologist told me the way it enhances makes them think it will end up as a papillary lesion or fibroadenoma. Will have the core biopsy results tomorrow... Still anxious...

Did they mention whether it was in a duct or not? If its in a duct it would be a papilloma, if not then its more likely a fibroadenoma. Location-wise I have never seen the reverse.

Meanwhile, I got the results of the biopsy: fibroadenoma. Don't know its exact location but will get back as soon I get a copy of the report. Just so relieved it's benign. Follow-up US in 6 months...

That is great news! 😀

FA's live in the breast tissue outside of the ducts. Good news. 6 mo f/u is routine.
