Calf cramps during waking up process in mornings
Has anyone on Tamoxifen 20 mg had issues with leg cramps? Sometimes mine last 2-3 days (I've been on Tamoxifen for 6 months now). They happen when I am just waking up, when I stretch my whole body in bed (I subconsciously do this as part as my waking up in the mornings). I found below article from breastcancer.org and was wondering if anyone found solutions that work for them, and also, for people on Tamoxifen for longer, do these cramps persist or get worse/better?

Hi, I have been taking tamoxifen for the past 8 months and I had my first leg cramps on Friday. I woke up screaming, Terrible "Charley Horses" in my calves. The pain lasted all day yesterday and today I am fine. I will be following this thread.

Hi Kcmc,
I was yelling too... It was beyoond painful and I didn't know how to get out of the pain or what to do next. I've had lots of foot cramps from wearing uncomfortable shoes or standing too long, but never calf cramps/Charlie horses like this. I still feel the one in my right calf from 3 days ago, like it hasn't resolved itself yet. KCMC, I hope Friday was an annomality, and maybe if you start eating sweet potatoes and taking baths with Epson salt and baking soda that might help. I may look for a foot reflexology massage that includes the calf locally where I live, and I already wrote my oncologist an e mail about it.

swimjames— I, too, used to stretch in bed as part of my waking up process. I have taught myself to keep my toes pointed up (as if trying to touch my knees) and found that this has really helped stop calf cramps.

I have a theory that all the sweating from heat flashes and all the water I drink to counter act the water loss is depleting minerals. I've been taking calcium/magnesium, kelp tablets for potassium (bananas work too) and the cramping has stopped. Also salty olives....basically electrolytes.

Hi Rachel Carter, I've been reading that cramps are caused from not hydrating/drinking water enough. I'm actually a very light drinker and I'm almost never thirsty. I don't know about kelp but this site shows the 7 richest potassium foods to have: http://ihealthdiets.info/top-7-foods-high-in-potas...

I've just recently completed a one week voluntary cut back in water intake while continuing my usual workouts (I weight train). The issue of dehydration and leg cramps came up on another thread where I stated that I was convinced squats and lunges have obliterated the gruesome leg and foot spasms. Others wondered if it was the extra water I drank in the gym. Today was day 7 on half water and I haven't had any return of the cramps. In the past if I took a break from the gym the cramps would come roaring back with a vengeance, even if I drank the same amount of water, so I'm still convinced it's the exercise. Weight bearing leg exercise is worth a shot IMHO. It's been the only thing that's stopped my feet from involuntarily turning into agonized pretzels or watching my calf muscle turn around leaving me limping for a week.
