Let's post here the most ridiculous Pinktober things we're seeing this year.

I'll start first.

I hope it doesn't sound like I am trying to diminish in any way people who have colon/rectal/anal cancer, but wouldn't a poop ribbon be more adequate for them than for us?

Oh my. That doesn't do anything helpful for cancer OR my appetite. They could at least have tried for humor with a "Poo on cancer" campaign.

What other reason than to do housework would a gal slog her way through chemo/surgery/rads, I know my battle was all about a tidy abode....

Oh look! They include a ‘breast self examination shower hanger’ in the package...how thoughtful! Now I can dash off to the shower for a quick squeeze right after doing the dishes!

let me just say that the bagel looks far better in person and tastes heavenly-very addicting. It’s the best part of Pinktober!

I didn't laugh so hard in a long time. I also like the writing on top of the poop- like bagel.

Edited to say that I am for the pink campaign, poop-like bagel and pink toilets included. I think awareness does wonders, so if it comes in pink let it be.

I've always been active in breast cancer walks and five k's. Since being diagnosed 10 months ago this will be my first Breast Cancer Walk as a woman with breast cancer. It's a little disconcerting. I love the color pink. I have pamphlets, bracelets, teddy bears, headbands, etc. which I've been passing out since October 1st. I have met many women who were encouraged to have a mammogram or to start doing self-exams after speaking with them. I am not passing out any thing tomorrow during the breast cancer walk because I feel the women there are already knowledgeable on the subject whether it's themselves, family member, friend or neighbor. I do admit all the pink is a bit overwhelming because the real issue is we should be talking about this 365 days out of the year. Love the picture of the pretzel and the pink outhouses.

I wish someone had mentioned by extremely dense breast tissue, 13 years having mamograms no one ever mentioned it. Self breast exams are useless for my case. My tumors were close to the skin you still couldn't feel them. I need MRIs but insurance companies see a one size fits all approach. I hate the stupid pink parties and walks and whatever.

Now radiologists have told me mammograms are not good enough for me, why did I have to get cancer to find that out. Stop spending money are these ridiculous campaigns and work on better healthcare.

Meow13 ... I also have very dense breast tissue and regular mammograms. This is the first year I was told they were going to do a breast ultrasound in addition to the regular mammogram. It's a good thing they didn't tell me that even though insurance would pay in full for the mammogram as a yearly screening, the ultrasound would include copays and deductibles ... I might have refused. Thank God. The ultrasound showed the tumor, the mammogram didn't. You may want to inquire about the ultrasound mammograms. I am also a little put off by all the pink. I especially dislike the "save the ta-tas" campaign. BUTT the poop bagel is pretty gross/funny.

Hmmm...are we supposed to first eat the poo bagel, then let nature take it's course in the pink potties, and finally use the pink gloves to clean them? Yep, Pinktober sucks!! Haha

Also, when I saw the outhouses, all I could think of was John Mellencamp: Little Pink Outhouses For You And Me. Hahaha

Panera Bread's Pink Ribbon Bagel program was started by a breast cancer survivor and contributes thousands of dollars to breast cancer programs each year. I've seen various threads disparaging the pink license plate frames while ignoring that AutoNation has contributed more than $2 million to the Breast Cancer RESEARCH. Foundation.

Slapping pink on items and marketing them as "Breast Cancer Awareness" without providing any tangible support for the women and men facing this disease is deplorable, but I would hope that we would also consider that some "pink marketing" comes from a place of caring and may save the life of someone impacted by this horrible disease in the future.

Yes, it's great that money is being raised, but selling pink products is also an earner for the company making the products, not just in Pinktober, but throughout the year when nothing is being donated. And, I'd ask where are the funds going and what percentage of donated money goes to charity administration?

First, the bagels are a specialty item and are not sold all year. The contributions and recipients vary by franchisee. In some cases, every penny of pink ribbon bagel sales on a designated day goes to a breast cancer program. In other cases, it's based on a percentage of sales thoughout October. My point is that, in the zeal to skewer all things pink, it can be counterproductive to share posts without some research. In this case, a disgusting image is now associated with a fundraising effort initiated in good faith by a fellow cancer survivor.

Would I wish for total transparency and for 100% of net proceeds for every pink product on the planet to go directly to deserving recipients? Of course! We need to call out every company that hawks pink items under the "awareness" banner while contributing no real help. It's also appropriate to question companies about how much they've donated and how the funds are used. I've been trying to pin down Dollar Tree on that very topic and haven't received a satisfactory response. Still, we need to remember that corporations have many choices when it comes to donating funds. Do we want corporate benefactors to think it's simply easier to donate to some other program where their efforts are unlikely to be belittled? I suggest we be vigilant and passionate, but also sensitive to unintended consequences.

Or, as the "survivors" of said disease, we can appreciate the efforts and still keep a sense of humor about the whole damned thing.

I don't think anyone's intention is to disparage the generosity of Panera, or any other corporation that is truly trying to help. It's wonderful that these companies donate and support research, and appreciation is just a given.

October is a brutal month for many, and in some cases it's become a month of exploitation. We are just trying to get through, and this board is a place where we feel free to "let it out" by means of ranting, crying and using humor as a coping mechanism.

It's not right that here, on OUR board, members should be "checked" for expressing themselves in the above manner. WE are enduring the brutal treatments and sleepless worry this disease inflicts, and we need a safe place to express in whatever way we need to.

The treatment is still barbaric poison, burn and mutilate. The first line of treatment is horrific. Notice that new immunotherapy treatments are still very experimental and offered to those who traditional treatment has failed. Is it really that suprising that so many refuse treatment altogether or who don't endorse pink charities?

What Vslush said! The thread was posted with a slant towards the ridiculous/humour, not disrespect. The OP clearly states as much. Laughs are a much needed & appreciated relief IMHO.

Yeah, I don't need to be the recipient of a guilt trip for trying to find humor in anything. And as a lifelong cynic, I also remember that businesses can write off donations of any part of their profits on their taxes. And that bagel still looks like a turd.

I had very dense breasts but only had ultrasounds a few times, as they felt that the mammograms were enough. Eight years ago, I was called back for an ultrasound and then ultimately a core biopsy. It was in my right breast an came back as just a lump of dense tissue. So last year when I got a callback, I figured it was the same thing even though it was on the left side. I was stunned and beyond disbelief when I was diagnosed with bc. I ended up with a bilateral mastectomy a month later.

I've gone back and forth with the whole pink thing. My cousin's wife - also a survivor who had a lumpectomy 7 years ago - kept giving me pink and/or bc stuff - a blanket with the ribbon on one side and solid pink on the other, a bc book mark, bc pads of paper, etc. ad nauseum. I began to hate seeing her at the door. But then a few months ago, a friend admitted that she hadn't had a mammogram in over 3 years because she just didn't have time and also because she just hated them. she then said that she had just made an appointment and that I was the push she needed. So while I haven't gone crazy this month , I do have two little pink extensions in my hair in the hopes that it might be a reminder to women take care of themselves and get those mammograms.

If ya can't get it all with the Northern, break out the Swiffer!

Snickersmom, that's great that you were able to inspire another to get a mammo! I'm ashamed to say I'd never had one when I felt a large lump in August of 2016. Since there was no cancer of any kind in my family, I thought there was no way it could be anything (educate, educate, educate). I let it go til June of 2017 (triple negative, no less!). Thankfully it didn't spread, but just goes to show how much the unaffected truly need to learn about this disease. If it takes poo bagels and pink ribbons, so be it!

And I agree....bet your pink extensions are the bomb!!!

    Snickersmom,

It just hit me that you might want to put my comment to you on the "Dumbest things said to me..." thread. I'm sure you know what I meant about your friend getting her mammogram, but I know there's nothing "great" about getting cancer to be her inspiration. Open mouth...insert whole freakin' leg! Sorry!

October or not, you won't believe me that there is absolute NOTHING that tries to remind us of breast cancer here in my country. No pink, no ribbons whatsoever. So as much as I see how much you hate those ridiculous or rather laughable reminders and I am glad I don't have to be reminded of this rotten disease like you do, I am disappointed at the complete ignorance running rampant here despite the rapid increase in breast cancer incidence in this country.
