Dimpling but clear U/S?
Hi there,
Just wanting to get peoples opinions and to hear similar stories.
5 months ago I developed what looked like a blocked duct on my nipple (breastfeeding my then 16mo) but none of the usual tricks cleared it. I wasn't developing mastitis like I usually would do I just thought I'd leave it. Every few weeks I'd have try clearing it again and then decide to leave it when nothing changed.
Fast forward to about 4-5 weeks ago and I got another blocked duct on the same side, with a little help it cleared in two days and the original one stayed exactly the same. At that point I decided I definitely need to do something but couldn't get a drs appointment in time before our overseas holiday.
Then 1-2 weeks ago while in Italy I was looking in the mirror and thought I'd noticed a dimple in the same breast but was having trouble seeing it. With in a few days it became very evident. A few days later looking in the mirror again I noticed that above the dimple I'd developed a thickened orange peel textured area of skin. I also noted some lumpy areas but no defined lump. I immediately messaged my doctors surgery to book an appointment for as soon as we arrived home.
The day after we arrived home I went to the doctor, told her the spiel and while I was taking my top off she said "can you show me where the skin changes are" as she was turning around and then said "oh never mind I can see it right there" so they're very obvious. Within a minute or so she was having me feel a lump she found right by the dimple that she thought was also questionable. She referred me for a breast ultrasound and mammogram.
Today I went in for the US and the tech seemed to be scanning very quickly and then said "everything looks fine to me" she went out and got the doctor in charge who had her run the US over the dimple again and said nope nothing there ok bye and was off out the door. I asked him to wait and said what about the mammogram am I still doing it? He said he'd call my dr and then left. The us tech then started to walk out until I stopped her and asked what the lump on my nipple was then and she said oh it's probably just a blocked duct although there was no actual sign of a blockage in your duct, just get your doctor to lance it... really.. after 5 months?! I've actually stuck a pin in it before trying to lance it and it's a hard lump , a little blood cane out from beside it and that was it.
Anyway!
After forever waiting in the waiting room the receptionist calls me over and says I'll book your mammogram for next week, I said no I want it today like I was told. Eventually she agreed to book an appointment but it was a different clinic that does the mammograms.
When I went into the mammogram the lady said "so what is happening? The Imaging doctor rang and said you had a clear ultrasound but insisted on a mammogram as well?" Ahh.. no! My doctor obviously told him she wanted it done, I just asked to not have to wait a week since I'd already driven to the city for the appointment.
The mammogram went fine, she gave no indication of the results and said since it is a holiday weekend here my doctor won't get the results until Tuesday (it's currently friday). I'm concerned that the mammogram is going to be clear as well and I'm not sure where to go from there. I just think there clearly has to be a cause for these sudden and multiple signs and I'd rather not "leave it two months then maybe go see the GP again" as suggested by the imaging doctor. I am already worried that I've allowed a breast cancer to develop by not getting the nipple lump checked and I'm kind of hoping that it not showing up on IS might mean that it's still early stages in which case I want to get it sorted ASAP before it developed even more. I just think it has changed so noticeably in 1-2 weeks that it could be so much worse in 1-2 months!!
Any ideas?
I think I am going to ask the gp to atleast try to lance and or bipopsy the nipple lump in her rooms and see what that shows but if the mammogram is clear, what's my next step?

Are you having any redness or swelling of your breast? Is it hot to the touch? If you are still feeling uneasy about this I would certainly go back to your GP. We need to be advocates for our own health and you know your body best. I would get your GP to review your ultrasound with you as it seemed you had a very rushed experience with this and I can see why you'd feel the way you do. I'd explain your concerns to your GP and if your mammo comes back normal ask the GP what your next step will be. Waiting sucks so much. Hang in there. Keep your mind busy! Sending positive thoughts your way.

Nik_webb, have you heard back yet?

I was supposed to hear back yesterday but didn’t. I think I will call mid morning to see if the results are in. It was a holiday weekend so I’m not surprised that it has taken longer but this waiting is killing me, I just want to get this sorte

UPDATE Doctor called.
As suspected, the mammogram didn't show anything (except a calcification in my other breast). I asked her to lance/biopsy the lump on my nipple and she said she is happy to do that so I'm about to ring back and book that in for next week.
Otherwise, the plan is exactly as I suspected, monitor for another 2-3 weeks to see if it changes as hormones fluctuate across my cycle and if it is still there after that than do an MRI.
I will add that I'm still having pain/pressure intermittently in my breast and yesterday I notice that my nipple had leaked (still occasionally breast feed but haven't leaked milk in many many many months). So I decided to check the colour of my milk and discovered that the milk from my affected breast is actually a little darker than the other side, kind of a more darker yellow straw colour. Definitely still with in the realm of normal breast milk colour but noticeably darker than the other side 🤷🏼♀️

Keep us posted, but very pleased the mammogram came back negative.

UPDATE: had the lesion on my nipple lanced and the swab came back as NAD but no idea what it actually was. My dr and I now believe it has nothing to do with other breast changes. She wanted me to wait 3-4 weeks to monitor before doing my MRI until I mentioned that the area I thought was becoming a second dimple, has in fact become a dimple and is becoming more obvious by the day, at which point she said to give it 2 weeks then. I agreed thinking that that will atleast give me a full cycle since the changes started to definitely rule out hormonal causes.
After a few hours though I just started to overwhelmingly feel in my heart that I need to get it done ASAP. These changes just keep coming so rapidly. Then ofcourse I google about what kinds of cancer MRI can pick up that the other scans can't and it's all about inflammatory breast cancer which my mind has been drawn to all along but I've dismissed because I have no redness, heat or swelling (besides the kind of glandular looking orange peel section), in fact I think my breast has shrunk a little.
So my new plan is to get the MRI done next week (my gp said that she will write the referral for me whenever I choose to do it) and after that another week will have past and if nothing is found and the changes are still there then I think I will ask for a referral to a breast specialist and discuss whether a skin biopsy is possible to rule out IBC (or an actual biopsy if they find anything on mri to biopsy). Perhaps it's my anxiety speaking but at this point I just don't see how it could turn out to be nothing

any update since the 12th? I’mreading along, I hope you're in the clear!!

Got my referral for MRI but the imaging place said I can only get it done on menstrual cycle day 5-15, I'm day 19 🤦🏼♀️ Begged them to do it since I have 33-40 day cycles but everywhere refused. My doctor did write a referral to a breast surgeon but told me to get the mri done before I see him.
She’s just called me back to say go ahead and see breast surgeon straight away and be guided by him re: mri/biopsy.
So I’m just about to ring and see when I can get in there.
