Automatic email notifications?!?

Options

I started a topic yesterday and this morning I got up to my inbox full of notifications of replies on the topic.

If it's something I hate is to get my inbox full of spam - sorry, this is how I see this kind of thing. It seems to be the bane of our days, in forums, social networks, etc.

I had not set any kind of email notifications.

When I went in my account settings I couldn't find any option to turn all post email notifications off.

The email notifications should be set by default to "OFF". Let people choose if they want to get notified. Don't push it on them. At least make the email notification options in the account settings possible. The only option there is for private messages, there is nothing for posts and comments. Having to go to each and every topic in your favorite topics list to set the email notification option is really irritating.

seachain, sorry for that! This must be an error of the system. Did you fix it? If not, please go to My Favorite Topics in the left blue menu and double check if the new topic you had created is in that list. There, next to each Favorite Topic, you can choose "Add Email Notification" or "Remove Email Notification" if you'd like to stop receiving email notifications. Please let us know if that works!

    Again, sorry for the inconveniences!

There was a link in the email that was clickable and that took care of it. Thank you.

    Dear seachain,

When you start a new topic there is an automatic option (at the bottom of the page) to receive email notifications when someone posts. You can change it to not receive email notifications by selecting a different option. The same is true when you mark a topic as a favorite.

That is exactly the point I am trying to make. It should be set to NOT receive automatic notifications. Some of these threads have dozens of replies daily. If a newcomer subscribes to a dozen of threads their first day, 1. how do you think their email inbox will look the next day and 2. it's a serious put-off. Looks very spammish.

Not to talk about the fact that on phones and tablets that button is not easily seen. I just realized that I started the last two topics on my tablet. We kind of have frayed nerves and poor focus when we come here to post. Please don't add to the stress we're going through. BC.org is such a blessing for so many, please think about it.

    Seachain,

We appreciate your insight and will take it into consideration. The main reason we decided in the first place to automate this is because we have so many newbies doing "drive-by" postings -- where they join, post once, and never return either because they don't know that someone has responded to their post, or they don't know how to find the post they made. Sending notifications to members when they receive a response seemed like a logical solution to further engage these members. We understand that not everyone wants to receive these notifications, which is why we made it an option to choose.

However, we will take this all into thought and will discuss some options.

    Thank you!

I've been a member for a couple of months and never received email notifications of responses to my posts until about two weeks ago. All of a sudden I started getting email notifications. Thanks for explaining how to eliminate the email notifications, very easy to do, but of course I hadn't taken the time to figure it out, ha. I don't need notifications because I am on here probably at least twice a day and check my favorite topics. Thanks.
