KSuze - Awesomeness!! My Mum used to say ‘an education is something that can never be taken away from you, and will ALWAYS come in handy’. What you gave those students goes far beyond dollars and cents!
-
egads - the pinkness everywhere definitely compounded the surreal aspect of early diagnosis, but as subsequent years went by I could observe it from a far less emotional mindset. I also took note during chemo (while bald/nauseous/half flat plus one expander) of the luxuriant shampoo commercials with slo-mo long beautiful hair, restaurant commercials with delicious looking food, and just how much cleavage is featured on Keeping Up with the Kardashians and the Real Housewives shows, lol!
-
Although this is a food/diet thread, I found this heartwarming video on YouTube and want to share it with you. For the animal lovers.
The video talks about the Stevenson Pet Retirement Community at the Texas A & M Veterinary University.

Also, here is a link to the recipe for Paleo Pumpkin Cupcakes w/ Maple Syrup Frosting:

Good morning Cave Peepers!!
As promised I endeavored to whip up a steaming mug of Ksuze's anti-inflam java chai latte. A few pointers for anyone considering making this for the first time:
- Make sure you're fully awake before starting. This will ensure you don't have your pepper mill set on the large grind setting and end up with what feels like rocks in your mouth.
- Repeat step 1, be awake, this will also ensure that you actually read labels and not put onion powder into the mix instead of ginger.
- Have more than one cup of coffee made, just in case you didn't follow step 1 & 2, and need to start over..... like I did.
- Have Windex handy to clean up the mess on your kitchen window after spraying/spewing out your first botched attempt at the latte.
*
OH.EM.GEE. Y'all HAVE to try KSuze's latte recipe posted yesterday (made according to her directions, not my first attempt lol) It was a cupful of yummy, and I'm afraid I might have become addicted at the first sip! It was so good that I'm typing this with one hand.....I refuse to let go of my cup! Way to go KSuze and many MANY thanks for posting!!! I added extra cinnamon because I'm a freak….will that have an effect the health benefits KSuze?
SpecialK - Occasionally I'll read something on the threads that will catapult me headlong into a 'treatment flashback'. Your last reply did just that…..good lord do I remember the slo-mo computer generated shampoo commercials!! They would make my hand automatically run back and forth over my bald head. Not that my hair ever looked anything like the commercials, and I don't think many do have hair like that, barring children. Still though, it would have me cringing internally, yearning for regrowth and feeling that my plight was never ending…..along with many other feelings. Treatment (for me) was expert at stripping back layers of feminine confidence, most triggered by the visuals. As for the Kardashians, I will admit that I took great pleasure when viewing the 'no makeup' pics during my treatment…..how very mature of me LOL!!
JunieBee - Hey darlin! What a dedicated group of people at Stevenson Pet Retirement Community, and what a lovely concept. I tell ya, that 3 legged black lab stole my heart!!! Thank you for posting the link, and post whatever you please on this thread. We're not just food and diet....we're lifestyle, and your video link is exactly what it's about....a complete picture of our lives, from food to pets. Balance is where it's at babydoll! Speaking of balance.....those muffins look like a must, and perfect for this time of year! They'd sure balance out my delish latte!
)))))
So off to the gym with me.....hope everyone's day is splendiferous!
-
I swear that aliens installed a strainer somewhere in my memory!! I forgot to let y'all that there is a noteworthy thread on the boards. A great way to poke fun at our fears and share in much needed laughs. It's relatively new, but guaranteed to be a winner....
https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/31/topics/866580?page=1#post_5286756
Best thing about it? It's the brainchild of our lovely and amazing VAMP !!
Jump on over and join the fun...you won't be disappointed!
-
Cinnamon may have blood sugar-lowering effects. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I see that many people whisk or blend it, but I'm too lazy in the morning.
-
Ksusan, what you are doing (& have previously done) for those Cambodian students is terrific. I agree with Egads (& her mum) about the importance of education. For many years, DH & I have regularly contributed to scholarships we established at his alma mater. Instead of exchanging Xmas & birthday gifts we make additional contributions to "our" scholarship. We don't need more stuff & it makes us happy to think we can continue to help others, even long after we're gone.
Also, Ksusan, your breakfast suggestions inspired me to try making breakfast tacos with some paleo tortillas I recently purchased. Yummy!
Junie, those cupcakes are definitely on my list of recipes to try!
Love the thread you started, Vamp. While I don't stress much about recurrence, LE seems to always be in the back of my mind. Last weekend my finger was red & swollen (was my LE flaring? could this be cellulitis?). My DH looked at & said "looks like a bruise to me." He was right, of course. (I should have expected this - when you spend the day with a four year old, you're gonna come home with some bruises!)
-
Whew-eee, what a day!! Ran the gamut from putting out small business fires to 5 loads of laundry.....all made possible by drinking 14 cups of KSuze's 'addiction in a cup' latte. Absolutely killed it at the gym, and don't expect to sleep until next Thursday
))))) Such is life....never a dull mo.
KSuze - Thanks for the info, so at least the cinnamon may counteract the self induced hypertension my overindulgence may have caused
))))
JKL - What a marvellous contribution your hubs and yourself have going on!! Gold stars to you both on a generous and thoughtful way to 'give back...& give forward'. To think of the difference you'll be making not only to the students, but the possibilities of what their education may mean for all of us is, well, 53 shades of cool!!! That goes to you too KSuze....the gift of education is so vital! Ok I'll get off my soapbox here and move on to tortillas. JKL, I've seen the paleo wraps but was reticent to buy (Amazon, you can't get them here in stores) because some of the reviews said they were received moldy. What has your experience been if you don't mind me asking? I'll be posting a tortilla 'thang soon...store bought would make a great follow up to homemade. I bet your 4 year old adventures were worth the bruise, and a total blast!
Inna (godda davida) & TwoH - ‘sup buttercups, you’ve been gone too long! Cowgal, hows the tummy doing? MAP & Shazzzza, really hope you’re both back in the fold soon!
-
Have had the surgery wish I could say that the feeling of slight neglect from them had changed but let's just say I know a lot more about the nurses weekend plans and their shifts because they loved to stand in corners and gab more then noticing the deeply nauseas , barely awake but bladder insistent on it patient trying to get her attention.
Ya can't win for losing, me.
I been in and out of consciousness and still am nauseas so won't/can't even look at the crackers she brought.
And here is where I am at
Made a post in surgery forum
-
Jadedjo, so sorry for the feeling of neglect! For the nurses, our pain and suffering is just another day at work. I wonder if they are becoming a little desensitized with time. When I was giving birth, the two nurses who were poking me down there with needles were discussing their lunch plans. Was that a mastectomy surgery? I hope you have someone to help you when you get home. My sister came from Russia to stay with me for 3 weeks. That was super nice of her and extremely helpful. Good luck!
Ksusan, I think what you are doing is amazing. I also used to be a teacher in my previous life (before immigration, I mean, not in a crazy way), and I loved it. Such a rewarding occupation.
Well, I am enjoying last days of freedom before radiation starts on Monday. Finally felt strong enough to start taking Pylera antibiotics for my H. Pylori, which was found before my BC diagnosis. Let me tell you, this Pylera sucks! It's supposed to be taken with food. Three horse pills 4 times a day wreck havoc in my eating habits. And my poo is green now 💩. I am going to leave you with this disturbing image and drag myself to a breakfast and another dose of misery. Ta-Ta for now
-
Inna
Yes a double mastectomy with direct to silicone implants pre pec didn't have to cut muscle cause everything looked good so I guess working out helped. Their biggest worry right now is swelling in the left but it's staying soft so far it just looks like a giant compared to right and my lower blood pressure is a little too low.
Nope I'm on my own
-
Good morning Cavies!
Jade - VERY happy to hear from you (didn't expect it would be this soon, but YAY!!) Big thumbs up on making it through like we knew you could. I am sorry that your experience has been less than desirable, neglect isn't right. I am though, very glad to see you're through the surgery, able to type (yay!), and (from your surgery post) able to stand up. The swelling is a concern, so keep us posted on this please....ouch, hope they get that straightened out soon. How is the tummy doing the day after? The post and presurgery meds hit me hard too, no fun at all. So what are their plans for your discharge? Gentle hugs, you did well....onwards!!
Inna (godda davida) - Hiya chickee! I was wondering how your labour nurses even wanted to discuss lunch while tending to you....then again, and as you said, desensitizing happens. Probably necessary in their line of work. I'm sure they see and experience things that would have most of us carted off to the looney bin there wasn't a mental cut off switch. I am so sorry about the H.Pylori (that rhymes lol!)….such a horrible infection! Hoping you aren't in too much pain! Green poo.....how very St. Patricks Day of you LOL!!!! A friend of mine experienced the same while on the meds....along with throwing up what looked like coffee grounds....charming. As for the rads, I found the biggest hurdle was the daily slog over to the center...and the cost of parking being that of a second mortgage! It is exhausting so be kind to yourself....between the infection and the daily rads you need extra special pampering. Keep us posted darlin!
-
Jo, I posted congratulations on the other thread, but I'll say it here, too. I'm sorry you were neglected, but also, yay! alive!
Inna, that sounds like no fun at all.
I wear a few different hats. I teach and I'm an interventionist, though mostly I teach at the moment. I also write, and in the past I was a middle/high school teacher. I'd say my career positions cluster around communication.
-
KSuze - I'll apologize now for my past and future punctuation, spelling, and grammatical errors......along with all the dangling modifiers, fragmented & sentence structure faux pas. Oh, and the '...…………..' I so liberally sprinkle in my posts.
)))))))
-
Thanks all.
Egads007
Still nauseas from anesthetisia, not as much as I was. It didn't help that not only did they forget to bring me a breakfast tray almost everything they brought was an acid reflux trigger. I choked down the pumpkin raisin muffin cause I knew I had to have something but all I'm thinking is what a waste all that food was ( when your poor food waste is heartbreaking even if you still can't eat it) and all someone had to do was look at my chart and see I have acid reflux issues so coffee, oranges and in my case regular milk or not good for me. Or you know ask me if I have any dietary issues. This hospital hasn't endeared me to it. Nobody answered my call button twice.
I straight up said thank god it wasn't an emergency or I would be dead.
-
Egads, I'm not prescriptive about language unless it's part of my specific duties. I tell my students, "I am teaching you the 5-paragraph essay [or the subjunctive, or professional writing in the social sciences]. Your grade is based on whether you demonstrate the level of skills competency set for this course. If you don't want to use these conventions in your writing outside this class, that's up to you. I myself am not fond of starting every sentence with a capital letter, which I fine redundant since we now use end punctuation. However, during my time with you, I utilize it."
-
KSuze - Old habits die hard. In school the teachers opened a can of whoop ass on us if you didn't capatilize. My fingers can't help themselves . When the computer age dictated that only a single space should be made after a period (instead of the obligatory old school 2 spaces) I was in a hot mess trying to keep up with the new norm. My attempts have been dismal and I still have autopilot driven fingers. I guess they should be charged with a capital offence...ba dum dum chhhhhhh
)))))))
Apparently my love of bad jokes is still firmly entrenched too!
Btw, drop the capitol around here if you please, free-to-be-me rules the day in the cave
-
I'm mostly over my "capital letters are a tool of the patriarchy" phase, but thank you.
-
I need to vent....feel free to disregard.....
WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!?!?! *SCREAMMMMMM* In the past 2.5 weeks it's done nothing but rain. In biblical proportions!!! The damp has driven every single solitary asshat in this rotten burg out of the woodwork. So far we've had a lawsuit threatened by an insane Member of Legislative Assembly (figures, he's labour ha!) who relentlessly keeps proposing free, out-of-scope and not-on-quote, work to be performed, and a staffer thinking we're his personal bank machine!! The phone is ringing off the hook and we're being torn in 10 different directions. My poor cavedude, like me, is at the end of his rope and life ain't feeling so peachy. It hit such a pitch this afternoon that we looked at each other and cracked up laughing....but I think both our nerves are ringing like a bell.
Deep breaths.....it's not cancer, we'll get through, it's just a patch of life's BS and the sun will come out, well......sometime next year.
There. that's better. felt good to explode. *%#!!!! Gotta make dinner. Light a mental candle for me ladies. Tomorrow,, back on track.
Thank you, your business is appreciated. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrg!

Mornin' Cave Chicks!! Our usual Tutorial Thursday has been pre-empted to bring you Episode 2 of……..
EGAD'S TEST KITCHEN – Screwing up so you don't have to!!!
Our lovable Vamp recently posted about her yearning for a wrap. Our awesome JKL also posted good things about her purchased paleo wraps. Wraps……plaguing Paleo chicks for 10,000 years! My own wrap journey has been a long and arduous one. Recipes…… I've had a few turn out so-so, many outright stinkers and a number of 'toss that in the garbage…like now!' attempts.
Paleo breads are a bitch by nature, and flatbreads of any type don't get off the hook either. Many recipes turn out more of a pancake consistency or are so stiff and crumbly that you can't actually wrap anything in it without it breaking apart and landing in your lap….usually when you're wearing white, before labour day of course!
))))
During one of my youtube fests I came across a couple of interesting looking recipes and grudgingly decided to give them a test drive…..which as you probably know is an expensive gamble. Paleo ingredients ain't cheap!
Ladies, hang on to your hat & start your ovens……..
Ingredients
- 1 cup ground flax seed (golden or dark)
- 2/3 cup water
- Salt to taste
Instructions: Bring water & salt to a rolling boil, add ground flax seed and stir until it forms a sticky ball. Cut into 4 (or 2 for larger wraps) chunks and let cool. Press or roll to desired thickness and fry in an oiled non stick or cast iron pan, 1-3 minutes per side. Make wraps...oh yeah!
Instructional vid......great for initial cooking, you can ignore all the fussing she does getting it perfectly round, read my tips below....will save you a lot of tears and hair pulling.
Yeah. That's all folks!! 3 MEASLY INGREDIENTS turned this out…. (images darker than reality....gotta hate iPhone pictures)
Above: Right: using golden flaxseed Left: using dark flaxseed
This puppy sings the old American Breed tune "Bend me, shape me, any way you want me!" It's flexible, and remains that way even after freezing. They freeze beautifully….no difference to taste nor texture AT ALL. Taste….slightly nutty, but imperceptible once filled with goodies, can be bland so salt to taste. Texture….a little like whole wheat, and can be slightly 'slippery' if they get too wet from the fillings, or once you get chewing. Again, the filing makes up for any texture wonkiness . If made with dark flax seed flour you'll have a slight rye bread taste (woot!)
After freeze/defrost…a simple sliced bbq chicken, tomato, spinach and mayo wrap (yeah went a little heavy on the mayo
))
Now, y'all didn't think you were going to get off easy did you?
Prep and making of this wrap is fiddly, fussy and somewhat frustrating on the first few attempts. The vid makes it look like a breeze….which it is until it's time to pick the wrap up and put it in the pan. Here are some tips…..
- After removing the dough ball from the pot immediately slice into 4 (or two for a large wrap). Careful not to burn your hands
- Let it cool completely before rolling or pressing….the texture when warm is too sticky to work with.
- Roll out the dough between parchment or slip pad, but oil the paper or pad before starting…otherwise good luck getting it peeled of the paper.
- Flip carefully into the pan, it wants to overlap and getting it straight without tearing takes the skill of a surgeon.
- Cook for longer than 1 min stated in the vid if you want colour. I flipped over a few times and probably went 2-3 mins per side.
- After removing from pan, place directly on the countertop until cooled. Putting on to paper towel as instructed will end in disaster…..they'll stick to the paper towel.
- Once cooled off completely you'll have a flexible, very 'like the real thing' wrap. Freeze with wax or parchment paper between each wrap.
- I found it best to use the vid for the initial cooking method….as for rolling and cooking, it takes practice and patience. Once you get the hang of it I'd recommend this for batch cooking and freezing.
Final Impressions: Holy grail status? No, but comes close in flexibility and will be my go-to until I find something that will surpass the results. Getting the hang of it takes it down a notch, but the few ingredients and simplicity of initial prep is awesome! All in all I'm very happy to have found this recipe.
Disclaimer: I haven't eaten any type of wheat/grain based bread in close to 4 years. What delights me, may not delight you....especially if you're new to the wheatless game. Start with small batches and test before wasting expensive ingredients....and then making an Egads doll to stick pins into
))))))))
Stay tuned for episode 3 tomorrow when I'll be continuing with a test on a microwave version of these wraps and new pita flatbread.
-
Oy vey..
-
LOL, a woman of few words....I take it that's a no go for you Inna
))))
They really are worth it, and not that bad once you get the hang of getting it from the paper into the pan. Best I've tried after all this time, and almost a relief to be able to have an egg salad wrap today.
-
Wow! I'll have to try that some weekend when I have time to get it right!
Can you paleo women eat these coconut wraps? They're stiff but taste okay. Basically ain't nothing but coconut.
-
KSuze - Yes indeedy-do, paleo compliant! We tend to steer away from all things processed, but that brand checks out. The only thing I can see wrong with them is the price...holy cow! Works out to the price of a loaf of bread for one wrap!! I suppose if a gal has to get her wrap on, she’s willing to pay whatever it takes;)) I splurge if it makes me happy!
They’re stiff because of the coconut flour. It sucks up moisture better than a sponge. Thanks for posting...coconut flour wraps are now going on the test kitchen list. Btw, how do they taste? Texture?
-
I've only had the basic one, and it tastes faintly sweet.
-
I found this on my FB page and thought I'd share a laugh with you all.
After every flight, UPS pilots fill out a form, called a "gripe sheet" which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems, document their repairs on the form, then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight.
Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humor. Here are actual maintenance complaints submitted by UPS pilots ("P") and solutions recorded ("S") by maintenance engineers:
P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement.
S: Almost replaced left inside main tire.P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough.
S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft.P: Something loose in cockpit
S: Something tightened in cockpitP: Dead bugs on windshield.
S: Live bugs on back-order.P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200 feet per minute descent
S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground.P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear.
S: Evidence removed.P: DME volume unbelievably loud.
S: DME volume set to more believable level.P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick.
S: That's what friction locks are for.P: IFF inoperative in OFF mode.
S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode.P: Suspected crack in windshield.
S: Suspect you're right.P: Number 3 engine missing.
S: Engine found on right wing after brief search.P: Aircraft handles funny.
S: Aircraft warned to: straighten up, fly right, and be serious.P: Target radar hums.
S: Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics.P: Mouse in cockpit.
S: Cat installed.P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer.
S: Took hammer away from midget -
Morning Peeps!
KSuze - Coconut, unlike me, is sweet by nature
))) Have you tried coconut aminos? (paleo soy sauce replacement). It starts out tasting just like soy sauce and within nanoseconds turns to an overbearing sweet flavour, blech! I hate aminos and won't use it. I do have a recipe for a pretty good soy sauce replacement if anyone is interested.
JunieBee - Thanks for the laugh! I read them out to my cavedude and we both LOVED this one:
P: Target radar hums.
S: Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics.Foodie Friday is upon us again.....hoping to see some posts!
So off to the gym with me, and then back into the kitchen. Back atcha' all later. Have a great day folks!

Hello All,
Last night we tried Sweet and Sour Chicken and it was fantastic, we had it over cauliflower rice and much to my surprise the twins want it for lunch today instead of a sandwich! No left overs for me, next time double batch!
https://www.wholekitchensink.com/instant-pot-sweet...
Junie - thank you for the laugh so early in the am! Love witty people!
Egads - I would love that recipe for the soy sauce, I have been using the unfriendly Tamari sauce. I am with Inna and thik the wraps are too much work. I will stick with lettuce....lol
Jade - how are you managing? Has the swelling gone down?
Told my husband last night that he has to get on board with the primal lifestyle change, no more making two separate homemade pizzas, no more Doritios, no more junk in the house that I like to eat! The boys and him don't have to do it when not at home, but until I can turn my nose up at that stuff it's gone. Not so sure he was impressed, but oh well, he's getting fat around the middle and I need him here for a long time so too bad, so sad.. hahahahaha. Sad is he married me because I can cook, bake and sew a button on a shirt (he is my 1950s guy and I his 1950s woman) and now I am taking away much of the baking.
-
The coconut aminos doesn't go sweet on me. I wonder if there's a genetic component.
At the end of 11 weeks of keto, I'm down 14#. 11 to go to first goal; 8 beyond that to functional end goal.
