Stomach Pain & GERD from radiation?

Options

I am 3.5 weeks out from post-mastectomy radiation. All nodes were radiated (including near my neck). I am suffering from extreme sore throat. Anything I eat give me a sour taste in my mouth. At night I have burning pain in my intestines. I found out today that my stomach was in the field (at least part of it). of course, I should have asked for the plan before. This is one of my many regrets about radiation. I wish I never did it. Has anything ever experienced this? Does it get better? I am not eating and getting proper nutrition because of the gross taste after I eat, food doesn't taste good either, and Because I fear the stomach ache. I have lost 10 or 15 pounds so far through radiation.

I am taking an anti-acid now, anti-depressants, sleeping pills and Tamoxifen. And I used to be someone who hesitated to even take an Advil. This is where we are I guess.

Hi LiveWellToday---I had a sore throat through much of radiation (also had the nodes near my collarbone radiated). It went away shortly after radiation stopped.

Hopefully the antacid will start to work and give you some relief. Have you tried something like Boost to try to get some nutrition in? There's a higher calorie one---Boost Plus. You can also find store brand equivalents right there next to it on the shelf. I come across this in my career and sometimes people with poor appetites and taste changes do better with a liquid supplement, especially if it's nice and cold. Maybe a popsicle for the throat? They can also give you a mouthwash to swallow that can numb long enough for a meal. Doctor would have to write a prescription.

    Hope you feel better soon!

Hi, Thanks for your thoughtful response. I am using Gaviscon and it really helps. I don't really want to take artificial things so trying to avoid the protein shakes but am trying to get protein otherwise through eggs and beans and protein shakes and tofu. Its not so bad that I need a mouthwash. its been almost 4 weeks alreay since I am done with radiation. I used to always have a sore throat prior to radiation and just worried this made it worse. I am worried that my lower and upper esophagus spincter have been damaged. As soon as I eat anything, I burb and pass gas. Then often stomach is bloated or burns. Then I have to take teh antacid. I am also taking Fomadine.

Hi LiveWellToday--- sorry to hear about your suffering from radiation. If you had radiation done on both breasts, you could have more SEs from it. I had total 33 rads including 8 boosters on tumor bed, radiation to chest wall and collarbone area. I was worried about my esophagus and lung exposure to radiation as my tumor was attached to chest wall. I mentioned my worries to RO at the initial consultation and she didn't respond much or I don't remember her response. I went through the treatment alright apart from an oozing nipple for ten days and catching a cold during the treatment. But I did develop a dry mouth a few days after finishing the treatment. My RO said my salivary gland was not in the radiation field but could be in the scattering field. I am still having dry mouth 4 months after rads, slowly improving. I had indigestion and swallow problems during my AC chemo. I had to eat semi solid or soft food, (like noodles, soup ) for a while and lost weight as results. I have since bounced back. Have you seen your RO about your troubles? Hope you get better.

My RO is a jerk. He is head of one of the largest cancer centers and I can barely reach him. I went with him because of his title but regret it now. I have local RO who I really like (actually love). I am meeting him on Thursday. I finally got my plan from my bad RO and my good RO says my esophagus was significantly in the field so I could have esophagitis from it BUT the really bad acid reflux I am getting is I think unusual.

Maybe you should consult with a GI? I had horrible gastritis during chemo - terrible burning in my stomach and a feeling like a lump in my throat that made me almost gag. My MO put me on Prilosec and Carafate. They helped a lot within a few days.

Yes. I am going to make an appointment with a GI. but I sure hope its temporary and don't have to be on antacids and Proton Pump inhibitors the rest of my life. I hope my injuries heal.

I agree seeing a GI sounds like a good idea. Your chronic sore throat prior to even getting radiation (if I understood you correctly) is something that really should be evaluated.

Hi all, just an update--things got better in terms of stomach and acid reflux for several days and now I am back to square one. If anyone is reading this who experienced acid reflux from radiation please let m know. My esophagus and part of my stomach were in the field. Also, part of my neck got hit (it was peeling).

It has been 1 week since I finished 20 radiation treatments on my left breast. I did NOT need chemo. My mouth is just awful, not sure what to think or what to do. My tongue is so dry and is sticking to the roof of my mouth at night. It feels like wet wood chips in my throat and fizzy drinks feel like battery acid in my mouth and going down my throat cuz it burns so bad. Radiologist said that breast cancer radiation is targeted to breast, so it could never affect my mouth, didn’t even want to look at my mouth and sent me to my primary dr! I had a bad cold my first week of radiation and took cold meds. I did end up with a very bad rash on my breast that none of the 5 creams they gave me would help, they made the rash worse. The rash finally just went away, but I have no relief to my mouth and throat and have dr appts. I am very upset because I don’t know what happened to my mouth, and was wondering if this happened to anyone else and their outcome. I’d appreciate anyone who’d like to share. Thx!!!

sorry to hear what you are going through Lulu. If you are having prone breast radiation then i believe the rad onc. But if you are lying on your back then there could be scatter. If you are having your chest wall and nodes by the clavicle radiated then it could get close to your throat. Post mastectomy radiation is worse than radiation after a lumpectomy usually. I got all my nodes radiated post mastectomy on my left side. My throat felt like I smoked 20 packs of cigarettes. They don’t tell you this but it can get worse for 2 or more weeks after the last treatment. I hadn’t heartburn, stomach burn and lost 20 llb because if it. With herbs and supplements and drugs I am better 3 months out.

Did you go to the primary care doctor about your mouth and throat yet? I have dry mouth from tamoxifen and they have me using biotene. Maybe the biotene gel before bed would help. I have woken up with my tongue stuck to my retainer before, that is super fun. During the day, ACT lozenges are pretty good but not long lasting, just takes the edge off.

I had really bad gastritis during chemo as well as mouth and throat problems. My MO prescribed "Magic Mouthwash" which needs to be formulated by a pharmacy - it includes numbing, soothing, and antibiotic medications. I also took Omeprazole for the horrible pain in my stomach and throat. Between the two - I was much better within a couple of days but continued the Omeprazole for healing.

Wondering if anyone else has had a Sphincter of Oddi problem after breast cancer radiation? If so, please share symptoms and outcome. Thanks sooo muc

hi I have been tested for everything you can imagine after getting severe dry mouth during breast cancer radiation boosts! I have met a few people who also got dry mouth, dry tongue, and very sore mouth from breast cancer radiation, so this is PROOF IT CAN HAPPEN to the mouth, even if it’s not supposed to affect the mouth, it does and cancer teams need to help their patients and do some more research. My cancer team didn’t even look at my mouth. If there are more patients out there I am praying you will share/post your situation on this site for the cancer drs. to see!! My last treatment was mid nov 2018, and I am still having a lot of mouth problems today, which I have to nurse most days and I am praying will go away. Thank yo

Thank you for this post. I have had the same problems with acid reflux and stomach pain. I haven’t been eating as I normally do and have lost weight too. I’m tall, so it doesn’t take much for me to not look well. It’s funny as I did not lose weight while taking chemo. My RO prescribed Carafate and it has helped. I have my last treatment on Monday (2/25)and was wondering how long will these symptoms persist? Thanks!

hi, I felt better 6 to 8 weeks after radiation ended. I lost a lot of weight after it ended because I could not taste anything and would have severe stomach burn when I ate so I didn’t eat. I open up GI encamp supplements by Thorne and put them in my tea. I feel that helped. Also I took malox every time after I ate. It got better for me. Mostly fine Now. Good luck

Hi Bgville, I also had stomach pain (burning after eating) and nauseau, my radiation finished mid-December. I saw a GI at the cancer center in late January, who had a number of theories but said she needed to do an endoscopy to be sure. That's happening in a few weeks. In the meantime, I started Omeprazole (OTC) and then a prescription PPRI whose name I forgot, both of those helped with symptoms a lot so I could eat.

Thank you so much. It’s good to know I’m not alone. I had acid reflux before breast cancer and was using omeprazole also. Taking it now in the morning and gaviscon at night. It helps some. I’m trying to be patient by telling myself that I had 6 weeks of radiation so it’s not going to get better overnight.

After the endoscopy I was diagnosed with “mild gastritis” — possibly from hormone therapy which I started at the same time as radiation. Continuing on pantoprazole, also recommended to eat smaller meals and to try to track foods that might trigger episodes and then avoid them. Hope you’re feeling well bgville

So glad to hear, 2002chickadee. I am about 7 weeks out from completing radiation and the stomach pain has eased up quite a bit. Still taking gaviscon but not as often.  It’s so nice to be feeling better. Thanks!
