Waiting for my biopsy results

Like many in this forum, I never thought I would be in this situation. Based on my second more detailed mammogram and ultrasound (9/20), I was listed as a B-5. I've already met with the breast surgeon (9/24) and had my biopsy (9/27). My followup is scheduled for 10/8. My surgeon said that 90% of B-5's are cancerous. I expect to hear from them by phone this week with those results. I'm hoping sooner rather than later. Another test will be done on those results, if in fact they are cancerous. I'm confused about this estrogen/progesterone and positive and negative test that will follow. Can anyone elaborate? Also, when I get the biopsy results will it only show negative or positive for cancer? If it is cancer, will it say what type of cancer it is then or when and how is that determined?

Thank you in advance for any information you can offer!

Hi Nancy and sorry you are in this stressful situation. The biopsy should tell you if you have any malignant cells and whether it is IDC, ILC or DCIS; that's determined by looking at the sample. Then they use the same sample to check for ER, PR and HER2 status; each will be either positive or negative.

Here is a basic description that should answer your questions. Hope it helps and do let us know how it goes.

NancyGee, sorry you are here and waiting... but welcome!

If it's cancerous, sometimes the information in your pathology report comes in different times. The cancer cells are first looked at under the microscope right after surgery, and the results from additional studies that require special techniques may take longer. That's why one surgery may bring one, two, or more lab reports.

In the following section of the Breastcancer.org main site you can read more about what your pathology report is likely to include and what the information means: Getting Your Pathology Report

Anyway, there's still hope for benign results! Good luck, and please, let us know how it goes. We're thinking if you!
