Hi all,

I'm BRCA2+ and planning on getting my ovaries/tubes removed. Did any of you choose to have a full hysterectomy? Those of you that did the ovary/tube removal, what was the recovery like?

I'm BRCA 2 positive, breast cancer at age 34. Decided to hang on to one ovary until I'm 40 so I can avoid surgical menopause for awhile and prevent earlier risk for osteoporosis and heart issues. I had my tubes and one ovary removed via laparoscopy at the same time of my bilat breast reconstruction with implants. I will keep my uterus, not concerned for uterine cancer and don't want the risk of some sort of prolapse. After surgery, I had referred pain in my shoulder, and found out it was the gasses used during surgery irritated a nerve. That hurt more than the small incisions/puncture sites and lasted a few days, but I got through. Night #1postop was rough at home, but I had a lot of surgery that morning! Good luck you you!

I have both the PALB2 and Chek2 mutations, which cause BC and other cancers. Two of my sisters have already been diagnosed with uterine cancer and one of them was diagnosed with ovarian cancer last week (only 55!) Yeah, I had my chemo, a BMX, and full hysterectomy within a year of my diagnosis and never looked back.

I chose to have everything removed. Just having taken tamoxifen qualifies you for insurance to cover it. One of the best decisions I’ve made and wish I’d done it sooner. Yes there are some side effects...hot flashes, dryness, etc. but there are also ways to relieve them too. Loving no discharge of any kind, no worry about pregnancy, no worry about periods showing up off schedule, etc.
