MRI Biopsy Needle Guided
Hello, can anyone tell me what to expect. Scared out my mind. Hated breast MRI. I'm claustrophobic. Said I will be given valium.

My experience with MRI (no biopsy needle guided though, I had my lumpectomy 2 weeks later without prior biopsy) wasn't that bad and, mind you, I'm considered a highly anxious personality by both myself and my closed ones (claustrophobia, agoraphobia, name it!). I took a Xanax 0.5 mg (the big one, that is lol) 20 minutes b4 the procedure and I felt kind of alienated and apathetic towards the procedure, not sure whether it was the Xanax or the tiredness of the last week of events that culminated in the MRI, it also helps that the breast MRI is conducted with the patient lying on their belly with their head resting on a fluffy pillow, I plunged my face into the pillow and closed my eyes and honestly didn't feel any sort of anxiety, impatience or imminent doom lol. The whole thing took only 17 minutes altogether, 11 minutes without gadolinium and 6 minutes with the substance injected, the technician advised me that the only catch is that after injecting gadolinium the patient shouldn't move at all which I gladly did as it were only 6 minutes left, I recall that I breathed very shallowly as I really wanted to pull it off successfully and not have to repeat it. The noises aren't that horrible, in some cases you are given even ear mufflers (not in my case...) and they definitely provide you with a panic button which is wise NOT to use after the injection cause you'll then need to repeat the whole drill (no need to have gadolinium injected in your body twice)... The technician will advise you to drink water (if you're not in the habit, that is) for the next 24 hours after the MRI, so as to help your kidneys get rid of gadolinium gradually. Don't overdo as too much water is as harmful as too little water for the kidneys. Overall I feel that if I ever need to have another MRI I wouldn't worry about the procedure anymore, which is good to know as I'm not getting any younger and healthier lol Good luck, hun
ahhh, just realized that you'll not need the gadolinium injection, so please disregard everything relevant to that, thank you

I just had a MRI guided vacuum assisted biopsy done on Thursday. I didn't take anything before, as I was only nervous about being numb (I did not numb well for my core needle biopsy) The radiologist I had and the technicians were great about talking to me as they progressed through each step. The whole procedure took less time than my breast MRI, and honestly the worst part was the pressure she had to hold after the procedure! I can imagine if you have a hard time with small spaces it would be a challenge. I hope the Valium can calm your nerves. Also if they don't offer it ask for ear plugs.

I totally understand what you're going through! I thought the MRI was the worst part of the whole diagnosis whirlwind and then they wanted me to do it again, only this time with needles!!! Yikes! Then I heard the tech say they were a little behind because they sedated the person ahead of me and I was like, bring it on! I want sedation too. They gave me a Xanax and 2 sets of ear protection (squishy earplugs and the earmuffs) and let me tell you, the second MRI was a breeze.
The second one was exactly the same as the first except somewhere in the middle the radiologist came in, sat on a wheeled seat, rolled under the table, numbed me, did his thing (I felt nothing), had a few more minutes in the machine and then I was done. Then off for a mammogram to check marker placement. I think the biospy part was easier than the ultrasound biopsy I had on the other breast.
I would say my first MRI was terrifying and the second was a piece of cake. Hope that's the same for you. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and you'll get through this.
Sending hugs, Lucky

Thank you dimammo. Yes it was helpful. I'm just gonna have to get through it.

Thank you JoTheGreek. Very informative.
-
Thank you Dani444. It's comforting in knowing your experience was better than the breast MRI. Yeah definitely getting ear plugs.
-
Thank you Luckynumber47. It's comforting in reading your experience also. I feel so much better now moving forward.

I will keep you all posted on how it went. Go for ultrasound needle core biopsy on 9/11 for left breast then the MRI biopsy on 9/25 for right breast. Hope I'm making sense.
-
wishing you good luck on your upcoming procedure. I am having same on Weds 9/12 and beginning to feel v nervous. How long did they say results would take for you? I hope it's quick, the waiting is the worst
-
Hello Peartree97,
Mine isn't scheduled until the 25th. Hope yours went ok yesterday. On 9/11 I had a ultrasound core needle biopsy on my other breast. Sorry I didn't see your post until after yours.
-
I had MRI core biopsy and ultrasound core biopsy before my surgery last year. Then I just had another MRI nuclear biopsy on Monday. I honestly never really felt much of anything. The hospital staff was fabulous and made sure they talked to me a lot and numbed the area first.
If you feel you are really stressed about it, they will give you Valium or something to take the edge off. Thankfully, I never needed anything.
Good luck; keep us posted!

- I had an MRI-guided vacuum-assisted biopsy yesterday with the help of a little anti-anxiety med, and I can say it was the easiest of the 4 needle biopsies I've had thus far (other 3 were US-guided - I'm high risk and apparently quite full of so-far benign lumps as well...). I don't like the MRI or the needle device so I requested the anti-anxiety drug for the procedure. The hospital staff talked me through the entire procedure and were very caring and comforting the whole time. I felt no pain whatsoever. The 'down-side', perhaps - although I was awake for the whole procedure, the drugs made me sleep for about 4 hours after I got home! Good luck with your procedure - I hope it goes as smoothly as mine! I go for a follow-up with my BS next week and was told I would get my results then, so a whole week to endure the waiting game. :-( Wishing you the best!

Thanks Snickersmom. Thanks for sharing. My doctor said they are giving me valium. I will keep you posted.

Hello, my left breast ultrasound core needle biopsy came back benign. Now just waiting for MRI biopsy on the 25th. I feel so much better going in with all the great information and support given. Thank you all.
-
Thanks pegasus68. I thought I submitted a reply. Thanks for sharing your experience. You have really put me at ease.
-
So glad your first results were benign! (Mine were too!) Fingers crossed the MRI biopsy will go well and also be benign!
-
Hello,
Awesome news. You have been in my prayers. Thank you and so glad to hear from you with your great news. I go tomorrow. Will keep you and everyone else inform.
-
Today I'm upset, stressed and overwhelmed. My MRI biopsy was today. I've been so worried that I forgot the time from time to time. So I called the breastcare center to confirm. Originally they failed to give me paperwork. So yesterday I called to confirm believing they know if I forget and someone gave me the wrong time. Now I have to be rescheduled.
This means more waiting. Uncertainty. 😭😭
-
So sorry this is getting dragged out more for you - it's so stressful! Hugs to you and hoping you can get this over with soon!
-
Yes pegasus68 very stressful. Thank you so much.😊

I had the MRI biopsy. I think I just have bad luck. Got there. and was asked did I already take the valium. I said, no. Was told I should have been given meds before surgery and they couldn't administer. I was outdone. This is all new to me. It was suggested to possibly postpone again. I said nope, let's do it. Was suppose to have 2 done but after one machine started having problems. I couldn't deal with the claustrophobia. Radiologist stop it. Still waiting for results.
-
Do anyone know? Is it a good sign that I haven't received my results yet?
-
Did they tell you how long it would be before you heard results?
-
If they did I don't remember.
-
Sorry to hear the biopsy didn't go as planned. Prayers that it will come back benign!

Hello, I have been trying to get to this topic for weeks. Biopsy came back revealing sclerosing intracystic papilloma with features suggestive of rupture and chronic inflammation. No definite in SITU or invasive carcinoma identified in sample. So I was told this is benign.😊 It was recommended I have a surgical excision of papilloma. Thank you for all the love, concern, and advice. 5 biopsies these past 5 months have been scary but, nothing compared to others with an end result of breast cancer. I continue to pray for you all.
