Triple Negative Breast Cancer & Pneumonia -Scared

Hi everyone. I'm very worried and depressed this weekend. I was diagnosed with TNBC Stage 3, Grade 3 in May. I finished chemo at the end of August and was scheduled for a modified radical mastectomy on 9/24. A few days ago I went to my PCP for a pre-op exam. He ordered a chest x-ray because I complained of extreme fatigue, cough, on and off fever, and pain on my left side that gets worse when I breathe. A few hours later, he called me and told me that I had a very high WBC and the chest x-ray showed multiple nodules and fluid build up in my left lung indicating pneumonia. He sent me to the ER so that I could receive an IV of antibiotics. When I got to the ER, I found out that my PCP didn't fax over the test results as promised, and they were unable to view the cd of my chest x-ray, so the ER doctor ordered a CBC and a Cat Scan. To make a long story short, the ER doctor told me that I didn't have pneumonia and sent me home. First he told me that the lung nodules were caused by an infection, but he refused to give me any antibiotics to clear it up. Later he tells me that I have pain on my left side because my rib cage is "inflamed"(costochronitis). In May when I was hospitalized with a very bad breast infection. They did a Cat Scan where they found multiple nodules in my left lung. The problem is is that nobody told me about this at the time. In August my surgeon ordered a Cat Scan which showed several new large nodules (5cm, 7cm, 8 cm) since August. So I don't agree with the costochronitis diagnoses. Before discharging me, he started yelling at me for going to the ER saying that he couldn't treat me because I wasn't an emergancy.

The next day I call my PCP office to update him on the ER visit. His PA tells me that I have pneumonia, and the doctor has already called my surgeon to cancel the surgery. She is in total disbelief about what happened at the ER and says that she will have the ER send over my medical records. A couple of hours later she calls back and tells me that she has made a follow up appointment with me this Monday with a different PCP in the office in order to discuss my X Rays.

I am freaked out about them delaying the surgery because my onc told me that my cancer was super over the top aggressive and had grown very rapidly in a matter of a few months. The tumor in my left breast was originally 12cm and a second 3 x 4 cm tumor was found growing near my lymph nodes. I keep thinking that the chemo was already stopped a month ago, and if I do have pneumonia that could take weeks to clear up, and then after that, it may take months to re-book the surgery with the surgeon. In the meantime, I can just picture the cancer starting to grow rapidly again and spreading everywhere before I have the surgery. This literally keeps me up at night. Thanks for listening.

Diane - I am so sorry you are going through this. This crap is difficult enough without having ER doctors yelling at you and your other doctors leaving you without answers.

I hope your appointment today goes well. Do you have someone to go with you for support? I am not a outspoken person, but when it comes to our health we need to stand up for ourselves and be heard. This is your life - you deserve respect and answers.

I will be thinking of you today.

    Hugs.
