Hello, I am 41 years old and have recently found a lump in my left breast. I waited in till after my next period to see if it went away, but when it didn't I made an appt with my family physician. He confirmed the lump and said I would need a mammogram. My appt for that isnt untill October 18!

20 years ago I had 2 lumps removed but those were very different. They were round and felt like they were just floating in my breast where as this one is oval ish and attached somewhere. Although my Dr said there should be nothing to worry about, in his clinic notes he categorized the lump as having irregular borders. I doubt it is connected but I lost 20 pounds over 4 months or so. I wasn't trying but was happy it happened. Also I quit drinking a couple of months ago but drank somewhat heavily for about 10 years prior. I am desperate to find out what this is and a 4 week wait seems unbearable! I have read over and over that there is an 80% chance that any lump is benign. Does that mean there is a 20% or 1in5 chance it is cancerous?

No, the 80% refers to biopsies coming out benign for over all category Bi-Rads 4 imaging. Lots of imaging comes back clearly benign with no need for biopsy, so way more than 80% are benign..

This could be a benign lump that has been there a while that you couldn't feel before you lost weight. Try not to get ahead of yourself. I hope your imaging clears things up

See if you could schedule the mammogram at a different facility. All of this is such a waiting game, however October 18th is a bit far out. My doctor wanted mine done the next day. The location I normally went to was booked 3 weeks out, so I went to a different location.

I really wish I could but there is only 1 place in my area that does diagnostic mammograms.
