Hi all, I’m so glad to have found this page! I’m sorry this is long and rambling!!

I’m 40 years old, and back in 2015 I found a lump in my left breast. I was sent for an ultrasound which found that the one I could feel was just a cyst but there was lesion deeper down that I wasn’t able to feel. Due to a recent allergic reaction to local anaesthetic (at the dentist) they performed a FNA instead of the core biopsy which had been recommended (I just had it without anaesthetic). The biopsy came back clean but then a couple of months ago, my left breast increased in size practically overnight. It’s noticeably larger. I delayed going to the doctors thinking it was just hormonal, but I decided to go 2 weeks ago. The doctor did an examination and found a lump. She sent me for a mammogram but it came back saying that they couldn’t see anything due to my breast density and recommended an ultrasound..Tye doctor then sent me for the ultrasound which picked up the same lesion from 2015, but I was once again told that they couldn’t see much because of the density issue.

I’ve now been referred for a core biopsy (I’ve since found out that I can have lignocaine) so I’m feeling really concerned. I’ve been having pain every couple of days from this breast and there are changes in the nipple(flattened)

Has anyone had similar symptoms or been diagnosed with BC after a negative fna? I’m not panicking, I would rather know what I could be dealing with

Thanks so much

Nicola

Nicola, you should get copies of your mammogram and ultrasound reports s you know what the specics are.

Two things stand out to me from what you are saying:

"Not seeing much" on ultrasound because of dense breasts doesn't make sense, because they specifically do ultrasounds because they "see" through density.

If they cant see anything on the mammogram, what are they biopsying? They have to be able to determine "where" to biopsy

sorry the ultrasound report says -there's a previously biopsied lesion at 1'o clock, 2-3cm from the nipple measures 6 x 5 x 11 mm

    Axilla is clear ..

    dense tissue bilaterally.

I had a mammogram initially that showed nothing at all which is why I got the ultra

I suggest you post the entire text of the report to the "Interpreting Your Report" thread

Hi Nic. Am I correct that they're going back to biopsy the same spot? According to NIH, a core needle biopsy is more accurate than an FNA:

"... In regard to determining exact diagnosis, fine-needle aspiration had a 33.3% accuracy and core biopsy had a 45.6% accuracy. With regard to eventual treatment, fine-needle aspiration was 38.6% accurate and core biopsy was 49.1% accurate..."

So the course you are on seems ok. An MRI is another option if your radiologist agrees you have dense breasts and the core biopsy is inconclusive. Wishing you the best.
