Question about asymmetry
Below is my mammogram report. Should I be concerned that there are two areas of asymmetry?

Findings: The breasts are heterogeneously dense, which may obscure small masses.
Right:
There is asymmetry seen in the in your region of the right breast.
There is asymmetry seen in the upper region of the right breast
Left:
There are no suspicious masses, calcifications, or areas of architectural distortion.
Impression and recommendation:

LovemyFam1,
Assymmetry is usually a benign finding but because there is the possibility of cancer they will want more imaging. Here's the clearest explanation I could find:
"Asymmetrical breast tissue is in respect to the same area on the opposite breast. So, basically when the same area of the breasts are compared there is a difference in breast tissue.
But, don't worry, this is a fairly vague finding in which there is no focal mass, no distorted architecture, no central density and no associated breast calcifications.
Usually about 3% of breast screening mammograms will show asymmetric breast tissue.
Furthermore, only a very small percentage of women with asymmetrical breast tissue will end up actually having a breast biopsy. Typically, a breast cancer diagnosis will only be given to a very small percentage of women with asymmetrical breast tissue.
An asymmetric density mammogram result is only a concern if there are associations with a clinically palpable abnormality, or a palpable mass. Otherwise, a certain amount of asymmetrical breast tissue is a normal variation that occurs in some women."
Best wishes to you.

Georgia1, thank you so much for your reply. It's very reassuring, and I'm going to re-read it until my appointment tomorrow. Thank you.

I just want others who are looking into asymmetry and see my report, that my results were b9, birads 1!! I'm don't know the ins and outs because as soon as I heard the good news, I left to celebrate! I feel I'll hear more in the report, but as of now I'm thanking God

I'm so pleased you got the all clear. I was waiting for an update from you as our situations sound familiar. I had my first screening mammogram three weeks ago and have an area of asymmetry that needs further evaluation. I have no palpable lump. I've got another three weeks to wait for my follow up mammogram. I keep alternating between thinking it is fine and I should just cancel my appointment to thinking that it’s definitely cancer and feeling my boob every half hour! I wish I didn’t have so long to wait!
Did you have a mammogram and an ultrasound?
-
Hi CharlieK,
First of all, I strongly suggest that you keep the mammogram. Chances are it's fine, but you can't take that small chance and need to find out for sure.. Also, I had two areas of symmetry, that weren't on my mammogram last year. The day that I came in for my diagnostic they actually did two more mammograms, that increased my anxiety. After that they did two mammograms, then they called me in for an ultrasound, and then the radiologist also did a look on the ultrasound. I'm just telling you this so that if it happens to you, you know that it can still be OK! I think there is a very very very strong chance everything will be fine with you, but please follow up on this!
