Foggyness from Tamoxifen??
Hello,
I'm not sure if this is common or anyone else has felt this way while on Tamoxifen. I've been on it for a year now and feel like my Brain goes into a fog I never had problems remembering things but recently I feel like I've been forgetting a lot. I've been able to deal with the hotflashes and headaches but the fogginess is concerning.
Thank you for any insight

Hi KayS1084, We have heard this from others, but important is also to let your doctor know if you haven't already. Are you on other medications? This page may also be helpful: Tamoxifen. We're here for you and glad you found our community.

Thank you,
I will be talking to my doctor. Have you heard of the fogginess goes away once you are off the tamoxifen?

I had a really hard time concentrating when I was on Tamoxifen. I felt like I couldn't hold a thought long enough to act on it sometimes. It was very concerning to me since it made everything that I did - especially at work - harder to complete.
I'm not sure if it was just the Tamoxifen, though. I also couldn't sleep due to muscle spasms every night. So some of the confusion and depression could have been from lack of sleep. In any case - it improved when I stopped taking it.

NotVeryBrave - sorry if you already covered this elsewhere, but what made you stop taking tamoxifen? I’m at the 6 month mark and the SEs are really annoying - it’s like I can never have a day where they aren’t impacting my quality of life.

I am still currently taking the tamoxifen. I wasn't having horrible side effects when I started taking it. As I got to 6 months hot flashes were bad so i got all natural herb supplement black cohosh. It works I dont get hotflashes as often. I've started to get more headaches now and feel like I'm in a fog. That is what scares me. I dont remember things like I use too. I'll be talking to my doctor regarding this side effects.

Ask your doctor if you can take 10mgs x2 per day or 10mgs day one, 10mgs -2 day 2, and rotate. I get some fogginess, but I make lists and am the ultimate planner. I stick to my lists and plans, and don't vary. I am experimenting with taking 10mgs at 6pm and the other 10mgs at 10pm. I do both at night, but the times can vary.
-
That is definitely an option with smaller doses. If you dont have your list do you tend to forget things? I've been writing list. I just feel like I'm not myself not being able to remember.

VL22 - Covered it elsewhere? Ha! Covered it lots of times! 😊
I quit taking the Tamoxifen because of the SE's. For me - there were problems concentrating, severe muscle spasms, depression, and vaginal discharge. It's possible that the lack of sleep from the muscle spasms contributed to the concentration problems and depression. I was also still on Herceptin and not far removed from chemo and surgery.
I frequently contemplate taking it again. I've read a couple of studies that looked at taking much lower amounts with good results. I'm considering that maybe the typical dose of 20 mg is just way too much for my body. My MO doesn't agree with me on this and feels that I will probably still have SE's and no benefit. I think I'd rather try finding a tolerable dose than nothing at all.

Hey,
I've been on Tamox for 100 days. I have always been known for having incredible recall and memory. A month ago I had a week where I could not recall things clearly or effectively...it was like they were there but I could not pull it into focus it was just fuzzy.I HATED this feeling, I felt robbed of intellect.Shortly after this I started taking magnesium as a supplement --not directed to or told to --just because a friend said that he was sleeping better when taking it. I started it and my memory/recall and fogginess is a non issue. Now I do not know if this was the reason, just an anecdotal story....that YES, foggy brain and lack of recall did hit me, I am great now and the only thing I see different is the magnesium.

I generally remember everything, as I have a photographic memory. I don't have alot of things I have to do, more things I want to do. I find that wanting to do things, keeps ideas fresh in my mind. Other things, more task oriented, I will see dishes that need to go in the dishwasher, so I load it and run it. I see laundry that needs to get done, I do it. Visual cues are great reminders of what is on your task list. I am also not hard on myself, if I have sewing sitting and waiting for a while, that is okay too. Today, I have to check on my relative's house, feed her cats, etc. It is just something that I build into my day. Do I grocery shop the same day every week? No, usually Tuesday or Wednesday, when food supplies are getting low (again visual cue). My kids are at college and need very little assistance from me, my husband is self sufficient and we eat different diets because I am gluten and dairy free. I do have a partially blind sister that needs some support, so I make sure if I say I am going to do something, that I do it immediately. So, I don't worry about fogginess, because I have made adaptations to overcome some of those issues.

I will look into the magnesium. I never had problems recalling pr remembering past events now I feel like you said they are there but fuzzy and not completely coming to me. I feel robbed of the ability to remember something that is important. My day to day function is fine. It's just recalling items from previous days weeks and months that I am worrying about.
