Tamoxifen And Discharge
It’s certainly been awhile since I have posted here! I am currently dealing with a few things that I am told are side effects of tamoxifen so would be interested to know if there are any others going through similar issues
I started tamoxifen oct 2014. In Nov 2016 I started to notice a sticky clear discharge but it was not very frequent so didn’t think anything of it. A few months later I noticed stains on my underwear so started to wear light days
Dr Hubby had a look for me and said that there was “white stuff” on the outside of my vagina. Off I went to the dr who did a swab. She suspected a yeast infection however I didn’t think so. I took meds just incase - the discharge seemed to stop. The results indicated no yeast infection - I finished the meds and the discharge came back with a vengeance
There is no bleeding - no pain or pressure. I have noticed that my tummy sometimes feels “stretched” and/or bloated but I’ve gained 6 pounds since starting this drug. Having said that I have been eating a bit too much fudge cake and not getting to the gym as much.
Sometimes I do feel pinching in my vagina when I sit a certain way and when I am doing crunches (sit ups) I feel a weird sensation in my vagina like pinching
I spoke with my Onc (my Angel) and he agrees that this is a result of tamoxifen and suspects that at some point it will stop
Dr Hubby had a look the other day and said that it looks like Elmer’s glue. It’s sticky and doesn’t seem to stop. When it dries on the pad it’s a dark yellow / brownish colour. Sometimes there’s a fishy smell which didn’t surprise my Onc either
My sex life is over (for now). I have no interest as I find this so embarrassing
Other than that, all has been great
Just wondering if any of you are going through similar side effects and what (if anything) you do it have done
Thanks so much!!

Hi Footballnut,
Thanks for posting -- we're sure someone will be by shortly to weigh in with their advice and experience with this unpleasant side effect. In the meantime, you may want to check out the main Breastcancer.org site's pages on Vaginal Changes for some tips and information on how to manage this effect.
We hope this helps!

Yes, increased discharge on tamoxifen. I have it. Sometimes so much I have to wear a panty liner. I mentioned it to my OB and she seemed unconcerned. It only happens leading up to my period, then goes away for awhile. Clearly no infection. No odor, but dries yellow or dark yellow.
I also have zero sex drive, but this doesn't bother me that much. I haven't gained weight, actually have lost a few pounds.
All we can do is keep plugging away!!!

I had a ridiculous amount of vaginal discharge while taking Tamoxifen - and for about 2 months after stopping it. It was clear, although sometimes looked yellowish or brownish when dried. It would cause me to feel like I was walking around in wet underpants. There was no odor, though.
After being SO dry from being plunged into menopause by chemo - at first it made for easier (better) sex. Then it got to be a real pain. I can't wear pantiliners every day because my skin gets irritated. I don't like being glued to my underwear, either.
So I quit the Tamoxifen and now get to worry about that choice.

Oh my gosh, same here. I've been on Tamoxifen since Oct 2015 and just now the discharge is unbearable. I don't know what to do about it, it's distressing, don't mean to be gross, but I'm constantly wet, I have to use panty liners everyday and change them several times a day. And forget about sex, not that I even have a sex drive, Tamoxifen took care of that, I just feel embarrassed about this problem and I just feel "unpleasant" down there if you know what I mean. None of the cancer websites give any good advice other than shower frequently, and the typical stuff. Anyone else experiencing this and have a possible solution that works for you?

I have been on Tamoxifen sine June 1, 2017. I have had mild and very sporadic hot flashes, but the worst of the side effects are the vaginal discharge, weight gain and a bruised feeling on the bottoms of my feet. Just wondering if anyone else is having the same se's, what they are doing about them (if anything) and whether these are precursors to some more intense side effects.

eek!
I just posted on Chemo SE board. I haven’t started Tamoxifen yet. But I am finishing my last TCH tomorrow
And I have this same issue. Ugh.
I guess to read others are not experiencing this gives me comfort as my alarm in my head that all my insides were about to fall out has gone down.

I have this same discharge problem, and it is caused by lack of hormones because of the tamoxifen. Basically it's a symptom of vaginal atrophy. I have had the Mona Lisa Touch procedure done, and that has helped my discharge problem a lot. It's still there but it's more manageable. Before I had the procedure my discharge problem was TERRIBLE. Constant panty liners and just a wet sticky crotch all day. My vaginal area is still not right, but it's better now after Mona Lisa Touch.

I am now 3 months off Tamoxifen and am having a real issue with discharge. I had it mildly for the 5 years I was on Tamoxifen but about a month after quitting it got quite heavy. I just finished up a round of Diflucan and I don't think it worked! No change for the first pill. Then second pill on Thursday. Yesterday (Friday) I saw it mostly go away but now today it seems to be back. Grrr.....This is driving me nuts! No real itching, just a very damp feeling because of all the discharge. I'd really love to figure out a cause. Did anyone have this issue and have it eventually go away after stopping Tamoxifen?

Same here! My MO says as long as its not chunky and really smelly not to worry. I guess I've found that Summers Eve wash and powder help with the mild smell. They also have a spray.
-
what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it help exactly? Thanks

Anyone have thick bloody discharge?
I to wonder what the Mona Lisa Touch is.

Thank goodness I found this site and your posting! I just started the Tamoxifen Aug 28 and the vaginal discharge started Sep 7. I asked my med onc and she thought I had a UTI. So I went to check it and of course it was negative for UTI and I don't need antibiotics. Goodness. When the results were negative, I thought I was incontinent! The discharge is bright yellow. Thank you for educating me. Sometimes the docs don't know all the answers.

I would be concerned about any discharge that isn't normal in color or odor. Normal is clear or white or yellow - not green or brown or bloody. It sometimes has a faint odor but not fishy or rotten.
Mona Lisa Touch is an in office procedure using a laser to reshape the vaginal opening. It is purported to improve the condition of the tissue and lessen discomfort and painful sex. Most of what I've read here is that it's somewhat helpful. It's generally not covered by insurance.

Hi Ladies! So I've been on Tamoxifen for about 6 months and last month the discharge started. I thought I was peeing my pants when it started. Literally liquid pouring out, several times a day, every single day.Yellowish, a strange smell but not bad. I have to wear large liners or thin maxi pads if I'm too busy to get to the bathroom frequently. All I can say is WTF? It's bad enough we get to feel so unsexy with our breasts removed, weight gain, sweating all day from hot flashes and no sex drive....now we get to add buying MORE maxi pads than before menopause??? Lord help us!
