Diagnostic Mammogram Thursday

Hi all,

First time posting here - I found myself on this forum googling. Long story short, my left armpit had been hurting for a few weeks. It is possible that it's muscular as I have very tight back and chest muscles. A few days ago, I felt a lump in my upper left breast. I have large breasts and have often felt lumps but thought nothing of it until this time because it felt a little different. Admittedly I'm not in the habit of checking as much as I should.

I made an appointment with the nurse practitioner. She did a visual exam and then an exam while I was laying down. She asked where I felt it and agreed it was more dense, however she could move the lump which was a great sign. She still ordered a diagnostic mammogram as well, because she said due to the size and density of my breasts the image would be better. She said the doctor may order an ultrasound if need be. The soonest I could get in is this Thursday. Of course today I noticed that my left armpit is puffier than my right - I don't know if it's always been like that and I never noticed or if it's new. I'm 36 with a three year old.

I feel like I am in hell waiting. I've foolishly googled armpit puffiness and lumps and I wish I hadn't. I know even after my mammogram I may not hear right away and the thought of waiting any longer makes me physically ill. I honestly feel like I can't breath. I know I have to pull it together for my son but I feel like I'm barely hanging on. I'm not even sure what I'm looking for, but thank you for listening

point blank, the waiting sucks. Sorry for being so blunt. But, you’re doing the right thing. You have to have it checked. It simply could be nothing. In the meantime, find something to take your mind off of it. Exercise, movies, working in the yard, etc etc. Maybe even try calling to see if you could get bumped up in the event another patient cancels.

Don’t waste your time worrying. It truly will not do any good. Plus, the stress is even worse for you. But one thing... do not google!!! That is the detrimental to your mental health. Half of the stuff that you read onlineis not even legitimate info.

Let us know how it goes. We’re here, either way. Best of luck, positive vibes your way.

Thank you - blunt is good. :) I called and let them know I could come at any time - I work at this hospital so I'd literally only have to walk downstairs. I appreciate the response! I'm someone who has massive anxiety even on my best days - this is a good practice in trying to exercise mindfulness, for sure. Again, thank you for answering, and I will definitely update as I know more.

    Hi all,

There was a cancellation so my mammogram was this morning. They did an ultrasound immediately after, and the radiologist looked but didn't see much cause for concern. She wanted one more mammogram image and a recheck in six months. These images will be my baseline. Thanks for all the great info on here and I'm wishing everyone the very best.
