Good morning all! Thank you for your replies. I did order the forks over knifes book, decided how not to die may not be such a great idea for me just yet. I am eating more veggies & have brought in blueberries, steak (never been a fan of) but I'm trying!! 😁 I do have 3 children and so far they have been ok with the changes, I do still allow them to eat certain things, I just want them to also understand the risk we take every day. I did find a Farmers market this weekend. I recently moved to a brand new state so I'm learning that as well. Thank you for pointing out the links I have got some great recipes from it. I think I'm the same as you vampeyes, I'm not full paelo I'm in between. I did make a lovely dish last night of beef & broccoli, with onions, red pepper, bell pepper & brown rice. It was good. Thank you ladies I will continue to read y'all's post and follow. 💖 SA

1 papadum is around 2.5 net carbs, and I'm willing to eat the amount of chickpea flour in it.

A fine semi-annual MO visit today. I reported that I had dreamed that she and I were in her living room having a great chat, then I realized our time was up and I hadn't gotten to my medical issues yet. She laughed and said, "Thank you for having a pleasant dream about me." I replied, "Thank you for being a great doctor whom my unconscious recognizes as benign." She did a pretty deep lump check since I've had pain. If pain increases or spreads, or if I decide I want to do acupuncture for it, I need to have her order a CT/PET. I agreed to monitor it. I also declined gabapentin for the moment.

The cruise was Seattle round trip to Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay, Ketchikan, and Victoria BC. Pretty good birding, and a reasonable number of humpbacks plus two orcas, two seals, a river otter, and a large number of sea otters. This was a family trip with nephew, his husband, my wife's sister, and her friend. Fun stuff.

Dairy agrees with me, but I've been sitting at no weight loss and no real decrease in fasting glucose for weeks, so I'm trying a few days without dairy and low calorie to shake it up. My body adapts brutally quickly--for example, I've gained no muscle mass after adding 2-6 Zumba classes a week and continuing for almost 3 years now.

Egads: Waiting for the family novel!

Egads so wonderful to read hour post, love Joe they always make me smile or "giggle"! I am patiently awaiting the novel as well. Looking forward to hearing all about someone's else's drama. 🤪

My friend with the magic pills is 3 weeks in, down 6lbs AMD 9 inches over all. She says the only thing she has changed is she is not drinking as much pop now. She also states an increase in energy, plans to start exercising next week.

Have to say I am a tad bit annoyed by this 6lb loss. I am sitting the same as a month ago (which is better than gaining) and working out. Maybe its because I only have 10lbs to go she'd she's got to be a minimum of 50lbs.

    Night cave chicks.

I'm still here, Egads. (Been keeping busy during my no-gym time so haven't been very active on BCO.) I'm eating well (made a broccoli/bacon salad for lunch along with a pan of paleo brownies) & walking regularly on my treadmill but will be glad when I'm cleared to return to the weight room. In the meantime, my closets & drawers are all getting de-cluttered & reorganized!

Welcome, Whatever & LORI! Whatever, I'm a big fan of SAT; lived there both as a child & as an adult. JunieB, I echo Egads & Vamp - take it easy! You've been through a lot in these past weeks & the pine needles will wait. Ksusan, my DD1 & DSIL took that cruise a few years ago & came back with the most amazing pics - it's a gorgeous trip. And I'm glad your MO visit went well!

Hey, Vamp, how are you doing? Don't get jealous of your friend's weight loss. You may actually be losing weight but adding (heavier) muscle since you're exercising so much. Plus, when your friend quits taking her pills, she'll probably regain most of that weight. She's not learning to eat healthy but you are. Paleo will pay off for you in the long run!

TwoH, remember the Gwyneth Paltrow/jade egg advice? She has some seriously strange ideas!

And Egads, I'd like to order an advance copy of your book. Can't wait to hear the whole story!

Hello, ladies. Well, turns out Abraxane sucks as much as Taxol in terms of side effects. This time pain wasn’t so bad, took a few Tramadols over the course of 4 days, and that was it. But, oh, boy, how crappy I felt for the whole 8 days! Fainted twice. Almost pissed myself during one of these episodes and scared the hell out of my family. My husband (who is not a cavedude but needs to be) refused to let me out of the house unsupervised. Luckily, we had 90 degree weather with 100% humidity during these days, so I wasn’t in any hurry to leave the air conditioned heaven of my living room. Woke up today with a throbbing finger. WTH? Started drinking protein shakes to combat anemia on my doctor’s advice. Heart palpitations made their appearance, although I still do at least 40 min of cardio every day on my ProForm combined elliptical/stepper. Chemo brain is real, and my failure to concentrate is spectacular. The last chemo session is next Wednesday. I hope it won’t kill me...
Made baked halibut with asparagus and onions yesterday. It was delicious! Gave up and ordered authentic Chinese food today because it’s my son’s birthday and that’s what he wanted.

Inna - How awful what you are going through with the darn chemo! I know you know to do this, but I am going to say it anyway, make sure you mention to your MO about the fainting. Like Susan said rest up hun, 1 more to go and you are all done!!!! xxx

Ladies I am desperate for help. Ever since our vacation I have not been able to get back to full Paleo eating. I have enjoyed way too many naughty things and I hate myself for it.... mostly because I really don't enjoy them! What do I do? Where is my magic pill to stop the food cravings? When I started Celixa a long time ago I quit smoking, because I didn't crave it, thank you Celixa! Where is my Celixa for food cravings!! Lol

JKL - I love organizing can I come help? You will be back at the gym lifting weights in no time! How are you feeling otherwise? Much pain? Healing nicely?

Junie - How are you feeling? Hopefully you are relaxing, enjoying the Kirbster and typing up more yummy recipes for us.

Humm, not sure what my favourite is. I think it's just the cravings, like today I am craving Rotuni Casserole - I switch out the noodles for cabbage, later it might be chocolate or Salsa. I am so all over the place with these cravings. lol

Vamp, I'm feeling great but bored. Hopefully my surgeon will allow me to resume my exercise routine when I see her on the 11th. Fingers crossed!

I can identify with your food cravings! Here's what works for me - Siete makes paleo tortilla chips that taste amazingly like regular ones (they're pricey but I don't buy them often). You can find or make lots of paleo-friendly salsas (or my favorite, pico de gallo) & you instantly have a great paleo snack. And yesterday I made paleo brownies (https://paleogrubs.com/best-paleo-brownie-recipe) that would probably satisfy your chocolate craving (that dark chocolate Egads touts doesn't cut it for me). I keep hardboiled eggs on hand, too, so I can make deviled eggs (be sure to add bacon!) for another easy snack. And when none of that works I give in, visit Vegas for genuine Tex-Mex & return to my paleo cave the next day!

You can do this! You've already added exercise to your routine so you're halfway there!

Hiya Cave Peeps!!! Dropping by during an afternoon rest, FINALLY got some time to myself....shopping never gets tired, but it sure makes me tired ;) Got me a TON of spices n' stuff that can't be found in Halifax. Toronto truly is a shopping paradise for food driven cave chicks....and CHEAP!!! I run around waving my hands in the air (like I just don't care ha ha!) on par with a 3 year old! When I get home I'll be cooking up some of my odd & unusual dishes.....what the heck I'll do with preserved Hawthorn is beyond me, but I'll find something :)))))

Inna (godda davida) - I just HATE that you're struggling so much! Like everyone has said, you're almost there.....and forget the treadmill if you're getting palpitations! We all know how hard chemo is on the heart, yours doesn't need the extra stress right now (without checking with your MO) You're eating well and doing everything you can to pull through, nothing more is required. As for the Chinese food, well babydoll, you've got that Paleo-get-out-a-Vegas jail card, use it!! Big hugs!!

KSuze - I'm so sorry you're in pain! Very wise to keep on top of it.....keep us posted on this, if it's not one freaking thing it's another eh?? Hugs of support!! I'm hoping your neato dream is an indication that all is well.....probably is!! Your trip must have been marvelous....my folks did that a few years back and had an amazing time. The pics they brought back made me put going on my bucket list. Full fat dairy is a so-so option for me (gi issues blahhhh), and hard cheeses. You're right though, dairy tends to stall any weight loss, and the water retention from the salt & sugars doesn't help the issue.....keep us posted on this too...we loooove progress!!

JKL - Whew!!! So glad you're still with us!! The boredom would be daunting I imagine, especially considering your gym routine....hang in!! When do you go back to the doc? At least you'll get the benefit of a re-org'd house.....I love getting my closets n' such back together, I love order.....geeze, OCD much :)))))))) OMG the jade egg thing....LOL!! 'get connected to your inner power'....is she insane?? Sleep with a jade 'egg' in the who-ha overnight to connect with my inner power???? I swear that woman has a genital obsession, I wonder if she steams her jade egg :))))))) *big eye roll* Big hugs to you, the weights will be back soon enough! PS....I've made the Paleogrubs brownies....they are soooooo good!!! I love that web site! (link is at the top folks). Great....now I'm craving brownies ;)

Vamp - If weight loss was possible through a pill EVERYONE would be on it. As JKL said, once your bud is off it she'll probably regain some weight because MOST of these magic bullets are simply a diuretic (water pill) and laxative...so you're simply dehydrating and pooping your weight off....that is NOT fat loss. My stinky BIL used the Wild Rose system....pills (laxative and diuretic) along with a low carb diet. Gee, he lost weight fast (because of low carb) but regained a bunch once he stopped putting his system under the strain of dehydration and diarrhea! So that 'system' isn't a quick fix, also....Rant #474

    1. You said your friend was very large to start.....weight tends to fall off faster in the beginning with very large people. You aren't large. In the beginning (without special pills) I lost 7 lbs in 6 days and 4 lbs per week for a few weeks after, but then it slowed down. 1-2 lbs per week....like anyone else unless they starve themselves or are using pills.

    2. Your friend is exercising along with the quick fix pills and a sensible diet, makes sense she's losing quickly considering her size. I'd bet dollars to donuts it's the diet and exercise that is the number one reason she's dropping weight off her large frame.

    3. JKL noted this: You are just getting started on workouts. Your muscles are not just growing.....they get something called DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). Some DOMS you can feel (like after 'leg day' ouch) and some you can't because you didn't overdo it. When your muscles are repairing and growing they absorb and retain water to help in the healing and building process. Kinda sorta like water retention of the muscle fiber which equals either a higher weight or a weight loss plateau. When I increase my weights at the gym I gain weight for a week following the increase.

    4. Tamoxifen can make it seem impossible to lose weight because it's an estrogen blocker....estrogen aids the cells in releasing and burning fat. Less estrogen = slower weight loss (much slower), ESPECIALLY when you're closer to a normal weight. This is why women tend to barrel out after menopause....lower estrogen. I swear I'd weigh 99 lbs soaking wet if I wasn't on tamoxifen.....we'll find out in December (yay!!).

    5. The scale is only a handy tool. Get out a measuring tape and take weekly measurements. Muscle replaces fat but at 1/4 of the size, so while you're not losing on the scale the inches will go down the more you workout and eat right. As an example....if I don't go to the gym for a week I'll lose 5 lbs. I didn't lose fat, I lose muscle. So even though I weight 5 lbs more when going to the gym it just means my muscle mass has increased, not my size. Muscle mass will make you smaller, but possibly weigh even more or the same...and this is why weightlifters shouldn't use a BMI chart, it shows them as obese. See the diff:

    image

    6. The answer is not in pills, what you are doing far outdoes what your friend is doing. It's hard work getting in shape, and if it came too easy, our chances of 're-gain' is huge. Tons of studies show that we have a better chance of keeping it off and keeping fit if we do it the right way....diet and exercise....WITHOUT putting more strain on our livers with who knows what is in those pills (btw, the FDA has issued warning to Truvision because of ingredients....and the lack of information the company provides). I know I'm not going to ruin what took years to build!

    7. Keep the faith....you'll get there, pill free!!

    Rant over :))))))

well, not yet...…..dark chocolate. Melt in a pan, add sweetener to your taste, pour in molds, thinly in bottom of muffin tin or ramekins, or even in dots on parchment paper....refrigerate. Bingo, you got chocs for a nice treat that doesn't taste like Satan's backside.

Okey Dokey, so I'm off to get gussied up for a ladies night out with a fab-u-loss group of gals...I'll be toasting y'all and having a drink or three in your honour....my gawwwd, would it ever be fun if you all could join us! Too much fun!!!!

Oh, would someone kindly start a GoFundMe page for my bail? :))))))

    Nite peeps...big hugs!!!

    Good evening all!

The pine needles are still covering my yard and I just ignore them as I come and go from my apartment. Eventually I'll get to it. Also, I still have a suitcase sitting on my couch waiting to be unpacked.

When Kirby came home last Thursday he was looking like a wild & woolie little boy. Thankfully he went to the groomer on Wednesday of this week and now he's back to looking civilized and cute as ever.

    image

Also, in my last post I said that I was starting a methyl-prednisone dosepak. On Saturday night I was sitting on my patio and felt some itching. My first thought was, "dang those mosquitos got me again!" Well on Sunday I discovered a bunch of itchy bumps on my lower legs and a few red itchy spots on my thighs. Long story short, on Monday, then Tuesday the red itchy bumps, spots, welts kept spreading. I called my MO and stopped by their office. They felt that I was having an allergic reaction to the oral antibiotic I was taking and had me discontinue it. I did, but the rash continued to spread & drive me crazy. Tuesday evening I had red welts spreading across & down 2 old scars from previous surgeries. This scared the blazes out of me, considering I've already been hospitalized twice in August for Cellulitis & Sepsis. I went to my local ER and my BP was 200/100. I get back into the room and disrobe, explained to the doctor whats been going on recently. He took one look at my skin and says "you have hives" from the methyl-prednisone or at the very least one of the preservatives or fillers in the medication. I've used this drug before, but not in the doses I was this time. Anyway, I stopped the methyl-prednisone and am taking Benadryl & Tagament (H2 & H1 blockers that work together to counteract the allergic reaction). Finally today I have some relief and the rash is receding. This is my first experience with hives and I hope the last. It is impossible to scratch your entire body even if it didn't also increase ones risk of infection from the scratching.

This evening I bought all the ingredients for the Broccoli Salad. Plan to make it tomorrow.

Okay, I'll say goodnight for now. Sleep well all!

This thread is too quiet lately, where did everyone go?

Junie - How's the rash, hopefully better! We had the Chicken Broccoli Alfredo last night for dinner and it was delicious, one twin was on the fence about it, but in our house eat or starve. Thank you for sharing and please continue to do so! :) Hope the pile of pine needles isn't too deep, wouldn't want you to get lost out in them! I was thinking wouldn't those needles be good for the ground or would it kill your grass? We have weeds, not much grass, and nothing kills a weed!

Susan - how are you feeling?

JKL - have you got any hobbies? Me I have too many, it's canning season so I don't seem to get much done with that on the go. Thankfully the twins are great helpers when it comes to canning! When I am not canning and have the energy I quilt, unfortunately haven't been near my machine in almost a month. Darn tomatoes!

Well today I am off to see my surgeon for a checkup, been stressing the last week or so as I have a tender spot that feels lumpy on my opposite breast. Likely nothing, maybe from the weights I have been doing? Either way it will be nice to get that off my mind and the stress cortisol gone so I stop thinking I am hungry all the time!!!

Have a wonderful day cave chicks!

No change in pain. I have the option for a PET/CT, but I'm waiting at least until my arm feels healed from the injection for the bone scan (still sore at times almost 3 weeks out).

vampeyes - The rash is all gone. Yeah! The Benadryl & Tagamet worked very well. I am glad you enjoyed the Chicken, Broccoli Alfredo. The pine needles are the Looong ones and are covering the ground. They'll just have to wait for the time being. It's amazing how you can learn to overlook something when you just purposely ignore it.

ksusan - Why is your arm so painful after the bone scan? When I get mine done, they put an IV catheter in my arm, inject the Isotope, then remove the catheter. Did they do something different for yours?

    Howdy Cave Peeps!!!!

My travel plans were completely skewed because of the family thangs' so I'll be living out of my suitcase until the weekend....a trip to Walmart for underwear may be in order :)))))) Needless to say this is relatively painless for me.....I love being back home.....just wish my cavedude and cavekid were still with me ;)

JuneBee - You deserve a medal for what you've been through sweetheart!! One darned thing after another! I hope the rash has healed up and you're feeling right as rain! What a handsome dude the Kirbster is with his new haircut.....it's like the kids would say about 10 years ago...he's stylin' and profiling!!! Hugs to you both!

Vamp - You're right! It has been too quiet in here....hang in, I'm about to post something that might bring a smile to your face.....or maybe a grimace, you be the judge :)))))) Btw, look at you go with the 'cortisol & stress' thing.....you're a bona fide member of the Swolle Sisters Club now!!! Onto more serious things.....how did it go at your checkup? Lump was nothing right?? On pins and needles waiting for you to post results! Hugs!!!!!!

Ksuze - My question would be the same as Junie's.....why is your arm still sore? I'm sure you're all over it with the docs. Could the pain you're feeling (in breast) possibly be caused by all your workouts? Vamp wondered about this as well. Over the last couple of years I get strange pains through the pecs which I put down to increasing weights/workout intensity. Imaging has been clear. Crossing fingers and toes here the same is for both you and Vamp.

Ok, the 'Great American Novel' is in the works.....there is so much to relay that I'll have to do it in chapters LOL!!! All at once would be waaaay too long...even for a blabby gus like myself!

Stay tuned for some fun stuff over the next few days ladies.....but keep the hard work you all do going strong!!....Cave Chicks are good that way!!!

Thanks for asking. The med tech or nurse blew out my vein toward the end of the injection of radioactive material. Very painful.

I doubt very much the new breast/chest pain is from working out. My exercise regimen hasn't changed for 3 years. I'm doing only minor lifting and this doesn't feel like muscle strain.

    TUESDAY..........WITH A TWIST ;)

A large portion of our health chatter in here concerns food. Food is good. Food is great as a matter o' fact!. Food is also not confined to what we North American's serve up on a plate everyday. A good example of that would be the cricket muffins I posted previously...…….

There is a whole world of food out there, some strange, some delish, some that makes you scratch your head....and maybe even scream....

So please join me Cave Chicks on a tour of a local ethnic grocery store, one of many here in Toronto...…………………………...fasten your seatbelts!!!!

Just YUCH, Egads. I'm with JunieB on the stomach-churning effect of those pics. And I thought the sliced horsemeat in in the deli section of an Aruban grocery store was disgusting ... makes your cricket muffin sound almost mainstream (accent on the ALMOST!).

Inna, Ksusan & Junie - hope you're all feeling better! And Vamp, I'm exercising vicariously through you & Egads. But I am planning on (cautiously) trying some upper body lifting this week (with only wimpy weights to avoid LE issues). Looking forward to having an explanation for all the sweating I'm doing (other than heat, humidity & exemestane)!

JKL - True mortadella (Italian sliced meat, absolutely delish, called Gabbagoul by Tony Soprano) traditionally has about 10% horsemeat included in the mix. I love it....lol figures! Mainstream I ain't! :))) I'll do an extra set of squats, lunges and planks for you....and no weight is wimpy, the fact that you're starting slowly is very wise! I'm sure your sweating is exactly because of the combination you posted. The only other thing that makes me extra sweaty is when I've eaten too much sodium.

Inna (godda Davida) - Yoo hoo! Where you at girly girl? Hope you're feeling better!

Ksuze - Ouchies!!! Hoping the pain recedes quickly!! How soon will you be able to get a CT or PET once you're better. On this side of the world it takes ages.

Oh but champignon sounds so much better than fungus, doesn’t it. Hmm, well just thinking of your fun self, I am guessing you bought the fish sausage. I cant say I would have bought anything.

I'm guessing star anise, too. If you don't cook with it, you could hang it on your Christmas tree!
