hello all,

I am scheduled for a lumpectomy surgery next week. My pre op appt is today. I am terrified of the possibilities of course. I am young, in my 30s with small children. Discovered a lump in the lobe of my breast about a month ago. Mamogram and ultrasound showed nothing suspicious. However the surgeon said not all breast cancer is detected by mamogram (esp in the lobes) and they want to remove and biopsy it soon (hence the lumpectomy scheduled). There's also some fam hx of breast cancer. My period has come and gone during this time and the lump did not resolve in fact it got bigger, limiting the chance of cyst. Guess my question is over the past few days I have noticed this sucker increase in size, discomfort, breast fullness, and it now feels tender from the lump area (inner breast near center of chest) all the way out to my armpit (outer breast). What could this be?? Does this seem normal? The spread and growth since monday is astounding me. Nervous to the core. Please talk to me. Thanks. Will update following today’s pre op appt.

Update: Had my pre-op today. They said the new discomfort from the lump outward to the armpit could just be from swelling caused by the mass itself, and yes even the lymph node under the arm can be swollen as a result of this mass. It doesn’t necessarily mean this mass or tumor or whatever it is has grown so rapidly overnight that it’s now across the whole area. Today they were more optimistic, saying that it doesn’t seem to be presenting as cancerous but again we won’t know for sure until they go in surgically next week. I still can’t stand this waiting period and the unknown...
