just diagnosed and had my lumpectomy Monday.i received the call from the oncologist saying that dcis was found in 2 different spots of the left breast. Its over 8cm in length and said she is suggesting a mastectomy. I see her on Tuesday, but my question is does that mean they only remove one breast? I am high risk and will be going for genetic testing next week also.

I’m gonna guess that most doctors wouldn’t argue with you electively taking the other side as well. Mine didn’t. For reconstruction purposes it was a better choice as well. You might run into insurance issues (them not covering) with the non-cancer side, but don’t let that stop you.

insurances cover non tumor side sxs too. Once you have a cancer dx, it's the law recon on the ok side be covered too.

thank you for the information. I am just very unsure of reconstruction. I have had 3 lumpectomys since 2006. I just want to be done.

there is no expiration date on insurance covering it as long as the surg links it to your cancer dx.

What if I dont want reconstruction and instead would like the other breast removed along with the bad one. Do you think insurance would cover that?

they should. It's all tied to your dx.
