Will I need treatment?

Hello,

Mastectomy of left breast was 1 week ago. No node involvement (4 removed) was found. I am meeting with my oncologist tomorrow, and am curious what treatment plan she recommends. If I had no node involvement do they not do the oncotype/mammoprint testing?

Is there ever a time when no further treatment is done?

Thanks for any info.

Congratulations on getting the surgery behind you. Now you can focus on healing (and getting the horrible drains out)

From what you've posted here it seems like you'd be a good candidate for the Oncotype/Mammaprint to see if the benefits of chemo outweigh the risks. Several things go into the chemo decision. Do you know what stage you are and what grade (how aggressive the tumor is). Do you know your Mitotic rate and your Ki67? Low numbers point to no chemo. Age can also play into it. Some drs are more aggressive with the younger ladies.

If the size or location of your tumor required radiation I think your surgeon would have already mentioned needing an appointment with radiology so maybe that means you don't need it.

So all of that was a roundabout way of saying you may need no further treatment other than popping a little pill every day for the next 5 to 10 years.

I was floored when my surgeon discussed what she expected for my treatments. I was like, wait, what? I only have to have surgery and then take some pills and that's it? I was expecting a year of misery with chemo and radiation and instead all I had was a BMX, several weeks of recovery and follow up appointments with my surgeon and oncologist every 6 months. Sometimes I feel like I cheated because I got off so easy. I hope it works out that way for you too.

    Good luck at your appointment

    Sending hugs, Lucky
