Yes, nkb, I know it’s sweets and too much carby stuff like bread and pasta. I used to limit those in my diet. Probably need to again just need to find the motivation. And even though I still exercise it can’t be like before so not as many big calorie burns. I think I will try reducing treats and see what happens, but can’t be too hard on myself right now. Getting ready for an over night camping trip to watch the Perseid meteor shower. Have a good weekend, everyone
-
Thanks illimae and petite for the info on Z. I tend to get nervous if I do not see people for a while. Hope she is having a good vacation.
-
Good morning or almost afternoon. Getting nervous cause I have scans this week - bone and chest/ pelvis CT. I had a good overnight camping trip with family, was fun to play in the lake with my grandkids. Did a mtn. bike ride this morning of 7miles with some big hills and it went pretty well. I hope that is a good sign that scans will be ok.
-
Phew got through scans today. Woke up at 2 a.m. and never got back to sleep. But went ok. Get results on Wednesday. Got in a little nap today. Grandkids spending the night. Our 8 year old grandson wants to do a little mt. Bike ride tomorrow morning, that will be fun. What are the rest of you up too?
-
katyk at least it’s over and now you can maybe rest more easy? Sounds like a lot of great distractions with the grandkids around. I love being around children! They sure take the mind off the self!
I am sending you lots of good scan result energy!!! I haven’t had scans since November and I know I’ll be anxious when the time comes.
I am in bed and have to work tomorrow, so being mellow. Worked late today and then met up with a couple girlfriends briefly for a quick drink and then fell into bed.
Hope you have great sleep tonight!

Hello! I am so happy to have found this board! I am an avid runner, recently diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer. I had actually just started training for a December marathon when I got my initial BC diagnosis on 7/23. When I learned on 8/9 that I had bone mets, I was worried that I might have to stop running... I continued anyway (I figured they have been there for a while, what's one more week?). I met with my MO on Thursday, and she said I am fine to continue running!
I know it seems like a small victory -- but running is my happy place. I think I would have a very hard time handling all of this if I did not have running as an outlet. I am so thrilled that I can continue with activities that I love!
So here's what I'm looking at in the near future....
1) Starting whole brain radiation next week (3 weeks) to address a small brain met, a skull met, and possible involvement of the dura;
2) Faslodex -- started just this past Thursday
3) A trip to Italy in September for my dad's wedding!
4) Starting Ibrance and Zometa after I get back from Italy.
-
Thanks, LovefromPhilly, and I did sleep better last night! Fell fast asleep while snuggling grandkids watching a Harry Potter movie and slept through the night. Feels good! Our 8 year old grandson is super excited to do a little mtn bike ride with us this morning. We have trails right near our home.
Twinklecat, glad you found this board. I don’t run any more as my knees don’t like it but used to be a very avid runner - collegiate, road races and numerous marathons. But I must exercise so I mtn bike a lot, gym, hike, walk and skate ski in winter. Exercise and moving has always been important to me and now even more so as it helps with my mental state immensely! I have bone Mets and lung Mets. I take Ibrance and letrozole and zomata every three months. Side effects have been minimal. I still feel pretty good, I just can’t do as much intense exercise as I used to. So on the mtn bike I can’t ride some of the steep hills that I used to and may need more breaks but still getting out there.. I was encouraged to exercise and was told it would help combat fatigue. I too have bone Mets but my exercise is not as high impact as running. I discovered my cancer as I just didn’t feel myself on my bike and was breathing harder. I did not know there was anything going on in my bones. I must admit that I am a bit more cautious when biking over rocky terrain as I don’t want to fall and break a bone. I would caution you to take it easy after your zomata infusion, it can cause fatigue, anxiety, and bone pain in some people. My first infusion I had more side effects. You may not but just be easy on yourself for a couple of days. After one of my infusions I took a trip to go skate skiing in the winter and I was so tired and came home empty both physically and mentally. But after resting a few days I was better. Of course you may respond differently.
You might check where you are getting treatment if they have an exercise physiologist that might help guide you. I had an appointment with one where I get treatment but sadly it did not go well at all ( long story). My MO is not helpful - she does not exercise and honestly they don’t care if I can mtn bike, not because they are mean but because they are trying to keep me alive. So I just take it on myself and do what I can by listening to my body. I can’t do as much but I’m still out there, even did a Grand Canyon backpack in the spring. It used to be very easy for me to hike out of there, it was much harder but I was so happy to do it. I encourage you to keep going as much as you can while being kind to yourself too.
A long post but I wish you well with your treatments - keep us posted. Rooting for you! And fun in your other adventures. Keep running. Gotta go bike now...
-
Good morning all, I’ve been at the gym and cycling pretty consistently the last couple of weeks rehabbing my knee from a fall, now I suspect I have a mild overuse injury to my upper thigh/groin area muscles from the cycling, so I’ll be switching things up a bit. Looking forward to some cooler weather here in Texas, so I can do another fall 5k.

Catching up here. Great to see new and old faces. Iwrite, wish I coud join your cancer support group hike. Love the pic. Andi, I've also been talking about doing more yoga and still have to make it a habit. Thanks for the video, lovefromphilly. That looks doable but maybe too strenuous for my stiff joints and muscles for bedtime. I've been doing some leg up the wall stretches before going to sleep to help with ankle pain and knee pain. So far so good, but I need to progress my yoga practice and the video could be my ticket. Mara, I also do a lot of at-home jogging when doing chores. It makes the chores more fun to be able to get some steps out of normally boring activities. Divine, how are you doing with the foot issues?
katyk and others, there's a thread called Wednesday Weigh In which is great for getting accountable. I think exercise and weight loss/maintenance are just as important as any of our meds. We may also not respond or stop responding to the anticancer benefits like any med. But still worth trying and keeping it up, particularly as, the way I see it, you get more bang for your buck in combination with our meds. So even if you were exercising and keeping a healthy weight before cancer, this in no way nullifies the benefit of continuing your healthy regimen after cancer. On the contrary. So let's keep at it, everyone!
Hope Z checks in soon.

Good morning. I had a good mtn bike yesterday, eight miles with some good hills but felt pretty good. I was happy about that. Right now I’m on my Ibrance break and I think maybe I have a little more energy during the break - but it takes a few days. I’ve been on the meds for a year now and trying to see a pattern in my energy levels but not sure I really do. How about others on Ibrance, do you see a pattern on your energy levels? Heading up to the mountains today with friends for a few days and will bring mtn bikes. I’m going to try this awesome loop ride of 17 miles that is tough but beautiful! I know I’ll have to rest more and walk some, it will be different than it used to be but I feel compelled to try while I’m feeling pretty good. It helps me mental state to be out in nature doing things I love with my DH. I’ll let ya all know how it went when I get back. And I hope weather cooperates, could be some thunderstorms that thwart my plan.
Illimae, I can’t wait for cooler weather too. I feel done with summer! Have to get out early before it gets too hot and dealing with smoke too. A 5k would be great and impressive!
Heidihill, I keep doing my best. I do get weighed monthly at doc office. I have stabilized on weight but still have extra pounds before stage IV cancer diagnosis. I just keep trying.
-
Welcome Twinkle! Looking forward to hearing more about the training program! Woo hoo Mountain biking KatyK! Admiring you for the effort. Hi Illimae...Texas heat is intense. Hope it cools down enough to enjoy a run
.
Brenda- Hope you’re all mellow after yesterday's day off.
Hi Heidi- so good to see you are up and at ‘em!
Grandma Camp is a wrap...visited a gold
Mine at 10,000 ft and went horseback riding at Garden of the Gods that turned into a hail storm stampede...kids handled it well! It felt good to be back on a horse two years after they scared me away from the activity due to spine mets. So thankful to be able to do things still!
Back to exercise when everyone heads home today and tomorrow.
-
I love reading about the activities that everyone shares. Gets me motivated. Kids are back in school, so pickleball resumes. Played three games today. It felt good to get back on the court!
-
Hello! This is my second week of camping across country. I have been in Colorado and have acclimated to the elevation..now at 11,000 feet. My husband and I hiked..very slowly..up to 12,000 feet yesterday.
This is my dream trip. Decided not to think of it as a once in a lifetime adventure, but one of many vacations!
I still have monthly labs and my chemo is being mailed to certain locations.
-
Iwrite- love that pic! Looks like S. utah country to me. A place my DH and love exploring!
Celebrate life- Funny you should mention pickle ball. While I have never played I was just at a park in a small town and saw others playing pickle ball. Looked like fun!
SandiBeach 57- Sounds like a wonderful trip. My DH and I love road trips too with hiking and mtn biking and exploring. What a wonderful adventure, please share more of your activities on your trip. 12,000 feet is impressive and inspiring!
Just returned from the mountains and first day did a beautiful 8 mile hike with friends. And today my DH and I did an 18 mile mtn bike ride that is a loop ( I got to the end with my bike computer saying 17.87, so I road around parking lot until it read 18😆). It’s a tough ride and I definitely had to do some walking up the super steep stuff but was very happy to do the ride. At the end you are rewarded with a super fun long downhill! Sadly very smokey so no great mountain view. Now it feels good to home and clean after a much needed shower! I have blood work tomorrow, oncology and will get Fridays scan results, zomata infusion and counseling appointment. Will be a long day and not as much fun as today. Nervous about scan results but feeling optimistic as I’ve been feeling good. Keep posting ladies, I love to read them!
-
beautiful photos!!!
Just back from upstate NY. Did some hiking there and then zumba this evening. Feels so good to dance!! I love it!
Katyk - my Ibrance fatigue situation is up and down. Sometimes I'm wiped and need a day of rest in bed and others I'm hiking up a mountain. Some nights I'm in bed at 8:30pm and others I'm out dancing till 2am. The Ibrance fatigue hits hardest when I'm not exercising for a few days. Also, just gettin gears going in morning sometimes is slow moving.
-
DH and I went to scout some public land to possibly camp on this winter. Maybe for a long weekend and totally wild. Campgrounds have their benefits but we’ve got some survival gear we want to test out. We got just a bit of walking in but really enjoyed the drive.
-
Beautiful pictures and wonderful stories!
-
Got back from oncology appointment this morning and had good news that my scans are stable. Phew! Had to do the zomata infusion which can cause some fatigue and just feeling “off” for a few days. Oh well, had to be done.
LovefromPhilly- dancing is so much fun and good exercise. My DH and I are terrible dancers but have enjoyed some summer concerts with dancing this summer.. That 30 minute YouTube video of swing dancing really paid off! Ha!😂
Illimae- thanks for sharing those pictures. Agree that campgrounds can be nice but sometimes you want more wild. A beautiful drive can be very fun.
Anyway we can enjoy moving our bodies or enjoying the beauty of nature is such a gift! Get out there ladies anyway you can! And post to share and inspire others! Have a good evening!
-
KatyK- Glad your appts turned out well!! Your Mtn biking sounds amazing.
Illimae- Hope you found the perfect place for wilderness camping. The pictures look great.
Woo hoo Sandibeach! 12k is way up there. It has been Smoky lately. Good thin the mountains are also pretty without the vistas.
The local YMCA has a Live Strong strength training program free to cancer patients for three months. We meet twice a week to work with personal trainers.
It may be available at other YMCA facilities. I'm hoping it keeps me moving until the holidays. Then it's time for eating
-
Hi! how is everyone today! KKaty congrats on your scans! Such a relief, whew!!!
I saw my onco today. Had my lupron injection and so decided to take it easy. In the past, when I exercised after the shots, I ended up feeling extra achy and sore for several days, almost flu-like. Some sort of immune response happening. So I am going on that I should just rest today and then tomorrow I will kick it back into gear.
Always a learning process!
Beautiful pics from the country! I love being outdoors (minus the mosquitoes!)
-
Hey there, LovefromPhilly. What is lupron injection? I did zomata infusion today for bone strength and that can make me a bit fatigued and flu-like symptoms. Have to take it a little easy but I’m going to try the gym tomorrow morning.
-
Kkaty - lupron is a drug that suppresses the ovaries and causes “medical menopause.”
I was 40 at diagnosis (last year) and needed to be put into menopause (either with Lupron or an oopherectomy, where the ovaries are surgically removed) in order to start Ibrance/letrozole. So I chose the injection over the surgery.
I also get Xygeva for my bones, but am currently on a small break as I have to get a wisdom tooth extracted soon. Once my dental health is cleared, then I’ll start back up on the Xygeva again.
-
I hope the lupron is not too hard on you. Sorry to hear you were diagnosed so young. Not fair!
I had the zomata infusion yesterday and feeling o.k. today. I think each time it may be a bit easier on me. I did get to the gym this morning to dosome weight lifting and that felt good. But not a big work out. That’s o.k. as right now in in my life I just try to do something, I don’t have to be good at it any more. So freeing without the judgment!
So what have others been doing? Out for a walk with the dog ( or cat😄), yoga, bike, class at the gym, swimming? Post it here and inspire the rest of us!
-
Have been walking 45 minutes to an hour 5 days a week and feel really good. Seems I've found something that makes me feel positive! Keep up the good work everyone.

sounds like a great walking routine! Glad it is doing positive things for you. I find I exercise a lot for the mental health benefits, it just feels good to move! I may have to take it a bit easy today due to zomata infusion the other day. It can make me feel not myself for a few days. Fatigue and flu like feeling. I did get to the gym yesterday and tha felt good.
-
Took it pretty easy today due to zomata infusion. Anyone else getting those infusions experience fatigue and just not yourself? Hope to feel more energetic tomorrow morning and get on my mtn bi,e if only for a few miles. Cooling off and not so smokey due to fires.Yeah!
-
Darn, that did not go very well! Really wanted to get in a mtn bike ride this morning but could only eek out three miles. Felt quite energetic last week and did that long ride in the Mtns but the zomata messes with me for a while. This happened in the winter and I over did it, now I know I had better scale back until I feel better. Anyone else get messed up by zomata infusions? What are you other ladies up to this weekend? We will have grandkids over tonight so that’s some exercise!
-
A 3 mile bike ride is still impressive, great job!
-
Thanks, Illimae! I have to remember that anything is good enough! Life is different and I don’t need to beat myself up.
