Primary Care doc wants me to see surgeon
hello, I’m 23 years old and have been concerned lately. A few weeks ago I found a small lump in my breast and when to see primary care doctor. I did an ultrasound and radiologist said just normal bumps and lumps of my age. I have no family history of any cancers and I’m healthy. I went to a gyno for something else and he also checked my breasts said they felt normal. Now my primary got the ultrasound results and said he wants me to see a surgeon to have the lump removed. I’m worried and don’t want a surgery. I don’t understand. What should I do? I was planning on keeping track of it and nothing more. It does not bother m

Its good that you are healthy and have no family history but unfortunately healthy women get BC and the vast majority of BC cases are not genetically driven.
Did you ask your doctor why he wanted the lump removed versus just keeping an eye on it? If you haven’t I would. For me no matter what his reasoning was I would still have it taken off if for no other reason than piece of mind.

it was through the phone but he just said to be sure he wanted me to see a surgeon.

I mean this could be a normal lump from hormones etc and I don’t understand how protocol is just an invasive surgery.

Dear Amar314,
you can certainly schedule an appointment with your primary to further discuss your concerns and/or you can schedule an appointment with a surgeon and discuss the benefits and risks of the surgery. The Mods

Hi Amar314.
I am 55 years old and was diagnosed with breast cancer this past February. When I was 23, I found a lump like you and my primary care doctor, who I still see today, sent me for my first mammogram. They saw the lump on the x ray and then did an ultrasound. My doctor said it was a fibroadenoma and we would watch it. It showed up on mammograms for 30 years. After 30 years, I figured I was safe. If it was going to get me, it would have done so by now. I'm not sure if that lump turned into what was finally my cancer, but it was so close to it, I think it did. If I could go back in time, I would have had it removed years ago. It can't hurt to consult with the surgeon. The surgeon might decide to watch it and not do surgery. If it needs to be taken out, a lumpectomy is really not that bad. Especially if it is just to remove a lump that is benign and no nodes need to be removed. I was amazed at how easy my lumpectomy went in March.
I certainly remember the fear I had when I first found that lump at your age. I knew 2 young people, 20 years old, that had breast cancer, so, I knew it could happen young. Having it checked out put my mind at ease. I didn't want surgery either. I understand. Good luck whatever you decide.
