I have searched for recommendations for diet during and after chemo. I am unable to find any.

    What has worked for you?

Well, it really depends on the person and how they react to the chemo. For many people, their side effects are well managed so it's just a matter of eating a healthy heart-smart diet.

For others, their nausea or loss of taste or mouth sores or aversions to certain smells make eating hard and then it's a matter of getting whatever you can down - just keeping the calories in and hoping they're mostly healthy ones. During AC, I had mouth & throat sores and lost taste so nothing really tasted good - - I ate because I knew I had to, not because I wanted to. I stuck to foods that I knew were healthy, lots of steamed and roasted veggies, small portions taken frequently, soft foods that went down easily.

There is a website which tries to make recommendations based on some evidence for foods during chemo and after https://foodforbreastcancer.com/articles/how-to-op...

If you know the month your mom is starting chemo, join the monthly thread for chemo & you can meet other people online going through it at the same time to share tips & tricks and support each other.

    best wishes ~

I pushed the protein and had some serious sugar cravings (sweets were the only thing that tasted normal to me). My blood levels were really good through chemo. I think increasing your protein significantly really helps.

Eating Well Through Cancer by Gerald Miletello, MD and Holly Clegg

The Cancer Fighting Kitchen by Rebecca Katz

These two books were given to me and were helpful in determining what to eat when and also provided tips on how to deal with certain chemo side effects. Rebecca Katz has a Facebook page and website.

It really will come down to what your mother thinks tastes right and what she is hungry for during chemo. I lived on macaroni and cheese and pork roast with white gravy for a year. Nothing else tasted right or was even appealing and just the thought or smell of certain foods triggered nausea and vomiting. I would not stress what she’s eating so much as the fact that she is actually eating something. Donuts are better than nothing.
