Junie, sounds like this is really good news. I think you found exactly the right doctors to consult - great job! What are the long-term ramifications of this treatment? Sending prayers & positive thoughts your way.
-
Junie - What great news to read you’re getting the whole ball of wax covered in one fell swoop...the mayo sounds amazing! I had to beg, borrow and steal to get treatment in order. Very happy you didn’t! As JKL asked, what is the long term looking like? Also, do they have patient advocacy that may help resource financial support for the extra 5 day pocketbook burden? We’ll keep the home fires burning for you, keep us posted when you can....and enjoy the heck out of the weekend in the cooler climate! Gentle hugs!!
-
Good for you for being proactive, Junie. Nobody at OHSU does this procedure, huh?
-
Junie I am glad you have a plan in place. I am a firm believer in traveling for care when you need to. DH went to Cleveland Clinic many years ago to have a new heart procedure. I cancelled my surgery from my local hospital at the last minute to go to the only person in the area that did a different surgery. Both of us were very grateful for the decision and the ability to do that.
Ksusan I love the way you eat. I like to load up my plate with several snacky sized items rather than focus on entree and one or two sides.
Unfortunately It is such a busy time for me at work that I can barely get fed at all. One night my husband made steak so I ate half a steak and half cantaloupe and called it dinner. I havebeen eating a lot of this chopped salad because its so simple to chop up cucumbers, tomato, and onion and a little romaine or red leaf lettuce. Sometimes I just throw nuts in it and call it a day. Last night I opened frozen tempura shrimp and had the salad so it has the nonPaleo breading but too tired to care.
-
That's a pretty reasonable divergence from the plan every now and then. I like to "cheat" with too many pecans or a piece of fruit (or for that matter, tempura shrimp). Ever so different from "I ate a Big Mac with the bun, so then I got a Big Gulp Coke, and since my diet was blown anyway, I ate two king-sized Snickers bars and a pint of Ben & Jerry's."
-
Good luck, Junie! Sorry, can’t write anything more uplifting or witty, second Taxol is kicking my butt...
-
Junie - it sounds like you are in good hands with this doctor. So glad they are able to do the procedure so quickly for you! Good luck on Thursday, will be thinking of you. xxx

HAPPY FUNDAY SUDAY ALL!
JKL - Your boredom is our gain...I love your posts!! Your words are an essential part of our thread, and we love you for each and every post! I have fuzzy memories of hearing newscasters say 'and today in the war' accompanied by shots of helicopters on rice paddies being loaded with wounded soldiers'. I was also the proud owner of a pair of pink elephant bell bottoms, which I tore the ass out of jumping a fence during a rousing game of hide & seek...broke my heart
)) I remember covering my ears and shouting 'turn it down' to my big sis when she would crank the vol on Zepp's Whole Lotta Love...fool that I was
)) At age 14 I had friends convinced I was conceived at Woodstock lol, so I'm not far behind you in the age department....grow old gracefully....I think not! Us summer of love gals fight it with a club, in the gym and in our minds. A Rolling Stones fan gathers no moss! So you're a lawyer? Cool! That will come in handy when any of the cave chicks are charged with carrying a concealed club
))))
TwoH - Love the chopped salad, and it inspired me to replicate it with last nights dinner...YUM! Thanks for the pic! Bless your kiddo, it has to rough for him. His stubborn streak will bode him well in life...it has for me lol.
Inna (godda davida) - The fish was easy peasy, just pan fried with lemon butter caper sauce made from the juices. I think it all went together under 20 mins....I heart quick meal prep!! How many more taxol to go darlin'?
Vamp - Thanks for the pic...all that's missing from that Thundershirt is a NASA label and cape
)) Is Stella's anxiety a recent thing?
Ksuze - agree with JKL, nice eating regime...variety makes for great meals!!
Fasten your seatbelts girlfriends...I'm planning short n' sweet info/paleo hacks for next week, primers for a clean Monday thru Friday.
On the family front it looks as if my Mum-in-law will NOT be told about the 'love child' whew! The siblings came to a wise consensus.
Enjoy your Sunday chickies! I'll be spending mine lolling around while my pork waits to get pulled....funny how culinary terms can sound so obscene...better put my mind in for dry cleaning:)))
-
Hi all.
Junie - I hope your appointments go well and that they are able to help you.
Ksusan - Your meal looks amazing. Does the mug bread taste like bread or like a egg casserole? I have never heard of tajin and I never knew what to do with artichokes.
Egads - I'm still here!
-
2 more dose dense Taxols. I hope I live long enough to recover from them and get on a diet
-
Love the infodumps!
Does the mug bread taste like bread or like a egg casserole? Not if you whisk the eggs well.
I have never heard of tajin Tajin: Chili peppers, sea salt, dehydrated lime juice, silcone dioxiode. My Latinx students turned me on to tajin on fruit, but it's good on other food, too. 2 Cal., 0 carb.
I never knew what to do with artichokes. You can just put canned artichoke hearts in a salad or chop them into an egg dish. Or broil them with a little cheese. They also come frozen or in jars (check the dressing). Whole artichokes: cut off the stem, pull off the outside row of leaves, wash the artichoke. Put in a pot with boiling water to cover by an inch (if you hold it down). Boil uncovered until a leaf from the 2nd row in pulls out easily. Drain. Run under cold water if you want, then drain. Serve with butter, mayo, or aioli. Pull off leaves, dip them, and scrape the fleshy bottom part off with your teeth. When you get to the fuzz, scoop it out carefully with a spoon. What's left is the artichoke bottom. Eat with butter, etc. Or drain, cool, drain. Stick in fridge until cold. Halve, eat cold with mayo or aioli (good work lunch or picnic food). There are also recipes for stuiffing and baking them, but these are the easiest ways to eat them.
Fun fact: Eating an artichoke with milk makes the artichoke taste super sweet.

Thank you ksusan! Are you in Arizona? Your saguaro makes me home sick...
-
ksusan - While waiting for one of my appts. last Thursday I Googled some docs back in Portland and while they do cryoablation to other areas of the body, none did it to bone. So glad I chose to stay here to have it done.
JKL - The Ablation supposedly kills the tumor and the vertebroplasty strengthens the bone, but these procedures are not curative, only palliative. The cancer cells ARE sneakily swirling in my blood stream, so I will have to continue my treatment of Faslodex & Ibrance.
I am sitting outside of the hotel at this moment and while it is still 80 degrees, there is a nice breeze moving the air and it is very comfortable right now.
Since there are no shuttles on Sunday and I was stuck at the hotel, I decided to try and walk to the Target store just up the road. It was 81 degrees and very humid, but I was bored and decided to go for it. I never made it to Target because it us farther than it looked. Instead I only made it about 2/3 of the way and had to stop at a little restaurant. I had lunch and got to talk with 2 different couples also visiting from out of state.
I knew I'd never make it back to the hotel walking and planned to call a taxi. However, the couple from Illinois offered to drive me back to my hotel and I was so thankful. I am now hurting a bunch and have been laying in bed ever since I got back to my room.
The distance to the restaurant from my hotel turns out to be like 1.5 miles. When will I learn?
Well, I am headed back inside to lay down again. I hope everyone has a good night.
-
cowgal, I'm in the northwest. I like the saguaro (from a recent trip to Tucson) because it has breasts even if I don't.
-
Hi ladies!
I am at a healthy weight, my BMI now is 22. I actually have lost more than 10 pounds since April by doing 13 hours fasting. I do eat healthy food - I make myself organic fruit and vegetable smoothie everyday. But I am just not able to totally get rid of unhealthy food. For example, I eat ice cream and red meat 2-3 times per week (today I had an oreo milkshake from Burger King!!
), even most of the time they are in small portion, I know they are just not he right food to eat. How can I encourage myself to stop eating unhealthy food? Thanks!
-
Junie, that sounds like a very effective treatment & much safer than cracking open your chest to remove & replace a vertebra! Sometimes I can't believe the things that modern medicine can do (and yet they can't provide a way to eradicate ER+ cancer cells without destroying all the estrogen my post-menopausal body needs). I hope this treatment is wonderfully successful for you! Are you from Portland? My oldest granddaughter is going into her junior year at Willamette (in Salem) & absolutely loves Portland. Her long-term BF just started his first post-college job there. It's a beautiful city!
I'm loving all the food posts. I made paleo pancakes this morning & we had them with fresh blueberries. I plan to bake stuffed peppers tomorrow. I'm still learning how to "cook paleo" so every meal can be a bit of an adventure. All the time I used to spend in the gym is now spent in the kitchen!
Waving Hi to all you other cave chicks! Anyone heard from Ingerp lately? Hope chemo's not being too tough on her.
-
Last night I made the keto 90-sec mug bread with vanilla, cinnamon, and a few blueberries, then topped it with half a small peach and heavy whipping cream.
-
Stephilosphy - Welcome to 'the Cave'! You've picked a great place for encouragement and support....the cave chicks here will see to that! Congrats on your 22 BMI...great feeling isn't it? It tells me you're not often indulging in treats.
Red meat 2-3 times a week isn't a bad thing, not in the paleo world lol! If you want more info on red meat, skip back to page 25 of this thread and check out my post 'TUTORIAL THURSDAY - THE INNA INQUIRY' for further red meat details, or these paleo guides: https://www.marksdailyapple.com/how-much-meat-is-too-much/

As for the ice cream, we'll now you're talking white sugar...the evil entity that sucks us all down an unhealthy void (how's that for sounding all doomsday-ish
)))))) there are plenty of healthy & very easy recipes to get an ice cream fix without the sugar. Good timing, I'll be posting on paleo ice cream tomorrow so check back. Do you have any particular diet regime that you follow besides fasting? Again welcome, we love newbies in the cave!!
Cowgirl - Hiya darlin'!! How goes it with the patients? Sure hope your hubby is on the mend! Thank goodness you're still with us...we miss you sumpin' awful! How is the food thang going for you?
Junie - Wow girlfriend, what a walk that must have been in that heat!! So glad that nice couple gave you a lift....and hope you get plenty of rest, you need it more than ever now. My knowledge of mets is so very limited, but I'm praying the meds, treatment and your awesome determination puts a beating on those sneaky cells. You've got this sweetie! Lots of rest, be kind to yourself and keep us posted. We'll be with you in spirit during your appointments tomorrow - big hugs!!
Ksuze - Omg did you bring back memories with the artichoke tutorial! Scraping on the teeth is the best way to enjoy them, even if I'm running for the dental floss after
)) I'm putting artichokes on my shopping list tomorrow, it's been too long since I've had them. Thank you so much for posting!!
Inna (godda davida) - did the 4 dense dose taxol too, after 4 infusions of the 'red devil' dodo...and it's no joke! Are you doing the neupogen shots too? Hang in there sweetheart, I promise you it does end, even if it feels endless (did for me). The SEs won't stick around long once you are done. 50% there, you can do this!!! Hugs!!
JKL- paleo cooking and baking is def an adventure, in time you'll be doing it with your eyes closed. Soon enough you’ll be able to look at a recipe and tell if it's a waste of time...and very expensive ingredients! Bet those pancakes were yummy! Ingerp, trooper that she is, finished her taxol treatments the Friday before last and is very happy to have done so. So proud of her! She's on to rads #1 tomorrow, hopefully she drops by the cave soon.
-
I don't know how it is where you are, but Trader Joe's here has cheap artichokes.
-
TURN THAT CHEAT INTO A TREAT!!
So it’s the weekend and you’re craving the salty crunch of potato chips. You don’t have to go to Vegas anymore!!
Three ingredients, potato, avocado oil & sea salt...we’re talking paleo compliant! WOOT!!
Caution: highly addictive, use sparingly (ie: treat only), carbs are still in abundance here waiting to expand your waistline!
-
Ksuze - thanks for the heads up! I’d kill for a trader Joe’s here...nada! Good thing is the grocery stores carry them, pricing is good in season, otherwise I have to take a second mortgage out
)))

Oh argh, on plumbing. Thursday night a spot on my living room ceiling caught my eye right about where the waste pipe from the bathroom runs. Yup, a very minor leak but a leak none the less. Tomorrow morning the plumber is back to cut it out and replace it as well as the pipe that runs from the tub cause it’s showing signs of going. Figured while they have the hole in the ceiling do it all now so I don’t have a redo later. Oh the joys of a 78 year old house. Every time a whole gets punched in my plaster I cringe.
I did three days paleo but had a slight cheat as I ate half a roll today. I’m liking this new way of eating.

Morning Cave Chicks!
Vegas Monday.....did anyone go home flush?
))
And a fine Monday morning it is....not. It's gloomy, grey and damp here. No matter, I'm forging onward and upwards! No Vegas for this gal over the weekend. I did partake in a few of the chips I posted on above. Truth be told I wish I'd picked a different treat. As usual, commercially prepared food didn't sit well on my tummy. If you're considering them, and not tummy sensitive, they do make a delish occasional treat.
KathBaby - Good lord.....I swear every cave in the village has plumbing issues lately....first me, then Vamp, now you! Do we have a plumber in the house ?!?!?! I'm hoping the plumber can fix it all up today, and that it doesn't break the bank.....keep us posted! Oh, and btw, I'm challenging you to do 4 days straight now....you got this!
)))))
Ok, so that said, on to the 'infomercials' I spoke about yesterday. I'd like to start with a state of mind piece, which is in line with KathBaby's last post and our newbie Stephilosphy first entry. This also applies to most of us at sometime or other....but especially when changing a life long relationship with something as important as food.ON FAILURE/SUCCESS.....both are OK!
- Changing eating patterns isn't something we can flip a switch on. It yanks us right out of our comfort zone and into the unknown. So don't expect 'perfection'. That isn't even possible for paleo veterans like myself.
- When you're new to it you WILL make mistakes. Like anything, time will be your teacher. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither will your shiny new healthy body. This stuff takes time!!
- Guilt, shame, or mentally clubbing yourself over the head for eating a half wheat roll or a bowl of ice cream will totally skew the whole point of paleo/primal/keto/whole3/vegan...or any regime. You will have blown your piece of mind and firmly placed your 'new way of eating into the punishment category. It'll suck the joy right out of any effort you've made.
- Stress will ensue, not good. Mentally or biologically. Stress can play havoc on weight loss, as well as every organ in your body. Life won't be very sunny, and your body won't thank you. Stress can also tempt you back to unhealthy ways, with a 'give up' attitude.
- No embarrassment allowed. Period. In the beginning it's imperative that you find support (cancer taught us that well), and that is why we're all here. Venting, 'confessing', screaming and crying, all judgement free is allowed. Period. It'll make your trip so much more pleasant. Life happens to all of us, and sharing always helps.
- Embrace your achievements and move on from your flops guilt free. It's done and over. Let it go and feel good about what you HAVE accomplished! Guilting yourself over something is a waste of time, it is USELESS. Never forget the good stuff.
- Life happens and can lead to bad eating. Make good with that.
- One of the cornerstones of paleo is peace of mind. This is a lifestyle, not a diet. Remember to take stock, regroup and concentrate on your whole self....not just the kitchen. Don't let food or worry over it consume you.
- Always pick yourself up, dust off and resume with renewed determination!
I apologize if I've disappointed anyone that was expecting kitchen/cooking/prep tips on this first infomercial post. I thought it so important to review the above as I've received a number of PMs lately that were guilt laden. Working on peace of mind for all seemed to be the best way to start.
Paleo hacks/tips & tricks on it's way soon!
))

Thanks, Egads, that was just what I needed to hear this morning. Funny, but I'd reached many of these conclusions prior to reading your post. I guess you've trained us to anticipate you! (Or maybe, at 68, I've finally learned a few things?)
I've been struggling with my food choices since my pelvic surgery. First it was the liquid diet. Now I'm taking two heavy duty antibiotics that have wreaked havoc with my digestive system (even though I'm taking probiotics) so I'm pretty much eating anything my body can tolerate.
In addition, I'm frustrated with my slow (internal) healing. I feel great (excepting the tummy troubles) but it seems like every time I see my surgeon she has some small concern. Apparently my AIs have done such a good job in shutting down my estrogen production that my estrogen-starved tissues are so thin that they are healing very slowly. She usually prescribes an estrogen cream to use post-surgically but with my 90% ER+ cancer I was hesitant to use it. After discussing it with my MO, I agreed to use a small amount, once a day, for one week. I'm hoping it will help but I have to admit that I felt like I was playing Russian roulette each night that I applied it!
Upset stomach, healing concerns, fear of estrogen, exercise restrictions ... guess I just don't feel like me at the moment. The good news is that I'm not using food to make myself feel better (an old BAD habit). In fact, I turned down two very tasty looking desserts this week with no effort at all & that would never have been possible before paleo!. And on the days my stomach cooperates I am eating paleo & trying new recipes (& enjoying them).
Enough complaining!!! We're supposed to have some cooler days this week & fall is just around the corner. I am taking DGD2 to shop & lunch (& to pick up the two bowls she made - & painted - at the pottery studio) on Wednesday & that will be fun. Life may not be perfect but I'm still very fortunate!
Hope all you cave chicks are feeling good & enjoying these final weeks of summer.
-
JKL - I don't know if it's the weather here or not, but I think my post may have been inspired by (and as you said), not feeling like myself at the moment. I needed a regroup, for myself and any that read it.
You've had such a tough road to follow lately....one I certainly don't envy. I know exactly where you're coming from. I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and uterine polyps the size of golf balls shortly after completing my cancer treatments. One on top of the other. I remember the struggle of trying to remain positive when all I seemed to do was bleed from somewhere. The terror of a possible new and different cancer along with the mental turmoil/struggle of what-was and what-was-bout to come felt debilitating some days. I think I may have posted into the 'Emotions' threads something titled "REALLY?" and "WHY ME?" sometime back in 2014. I was ready to give up and resign myself to another bout of who-knows-what. When I read my words back from those early days, and your post above, it brought home just how real our struggles are....and how they can effect our days. I finally chose to try to take something from it all in the end, and I guess that could be summed up in two words: intestinal fortitude. However, and as my post from this morning relayed, it took a great deal of time...for me anyway. In the immortal words of Scarlett O'Hara "tomorrow is another day". Until then, we'll have our days, so we roll with it in the moment and muddle through as best we can. Thank you for sharing your struggles. I for one felt another shade of normal knowing I'm not alone in 'those days'.
Have a splendiferous time with DGD2, and I'm sure it'll knock a dent in those struggles you've been feeling! Hugs!
-
Heh heh....when I die from whatever decides to take me, I think what I'll miss the most is life's way of pinning a 'kick me' sign on my back and blowing raspberries in my face.........
Just got my latest colonoscopy results..all clear (yay!) and a “whatever you're doing, keep it up" from the Gastro Doc.
Lifted my previous mood and now I feel like I've been put in a bouncy castle..weeeeeeeeee!
)))
-
Congrats on the all clear!
-
Yea for good test results of any & every kind, Egads! However (& that's a mighty big however), I don't plan on scheduling a colonoscopy to lift my mood! As Dana Carvey used to say on SNL (as George HW Bush) "isn't gonna happen; wouldn't be prudent."
Seriously, though, I'm already feeling better. I really do have a pretty great life (not to mention an awfully fun past!) & I don't often forget it.
-
Yeah for Egads! 🎉😃😃😃
-
Nothing beats a good colonoscopy result! Yay, Egads!
