Hi. I am 44. I had a biopsy on July 20 and was diagnosed on July 24th with triple positive invasive mammary carcinoma. They believe my tumor is 1.4 cm and nodes appear clear on MRI. The only way to know for sure is surgery. The oncologist in my tow offered 2 options:

1-Start chemo right away with TCHP and have surgery 4 months in

2-Surgery first to determine tumor size and verify nodes are clear and then have descalated therapy with taxol and herceptin

I was thinking I would go with option 1

I went to MD Anderson for their opinion and their treatment plan is as follows:

lumpectomy scheduled in 3 weeks followed by radiation and therapy with taxol and herceptin

I have been rather calm and at peace during this whole ordeal, but I am starting to freak out about sitting around for 3 weeks waiting for surgery and they told me that I would have to wait about 3 weeks after that to start chemo. I am concerned about reoccurrence and wonder if I should just have a masectomy. I have very dense breast tissue. I am also starting to think that maybe I should start full chemo with TCHP this week with my oncologist in town. My tumor was very hard to find before and it feels a lot bigger to me now. I really do not like the idea of just letting it sit there and grow while I wait around for surgery. Any advice on treatment would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. This website is a great source of information and support! I had surgery first and my nodes were clear (they looked abnormal on MRI). I was in for my mastectomy within 2 weeks of diagnosis. I did chemo due to having a high oncotype score. Good luck with your decision!

my dx was IDC tumor of 15mm and clear nodes... went for lumpectomy which showed tumor of 21mm and 1 node with micromets. the operation was exactly 1 month after the day I found the lump (3 weeks after dx). I started chemo 1 month after the operation.

Well, the decision is yours, just sharing my experience. I'm just very sorry I didn't opt for BMX instead of lumpectomy. But it would delay the whole thing, planing BMX would take some more time and possible the healing too. And I wanted it out of my body quickly.

Naplesali, I also was just diagnosed with triple positive breast cancer, two tumors. I have my first scheduled appointment with an oncologist in Friday. What I’m surprised by is it seems everyone goes to a breast surgeon first. My PCP referred me to an oncologist first and they are going to add breast surgeon after that meeting. I’m hoping I can do pre-surgery treatment first with hopes it will shrink the tumor and also stop any further migration. That being said, I’m new to this and assume there are a number of tests yet to be completed. Good luck
